Book excerpt: Excerpt from Zillah, the Child Medium: A Tale of Spiritualism Science has, in vain, attempted to penetrate this modern mystery. Opinions differ widely concerning it. Some have made it a religious creed, and pursue it almost unto fanaticism; others acknowledge its marvels, but disbelieve in it in every way as connected with the supernatural. There is still another class, which attributes the whole to the devil. I have had no other object in preparing this volume, than to present to the public, in the form of a domestic story, the various incidents of spiritualism, which, from time to time, have fallen under my oh servation. Some of them I have witnessed myself, and for many of the others I have the best of living attestation. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Possessed Victorians by : Sarah A. Willburn
Download or read book Possessed Victorians written by Sarah A. Willburn and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her absorbing study of nineteenth-century mystical writings, Sarah Willburn formulates a new conception of individualism that offers a fresh look at Victorian subjectivity. Drawing upon extensive archival work in the British Library, Willburn analyzes séance accounts, novels about mediumship, and metaphysical treatises to make important connections between contemporary writings on mysticism and fictional works. Willburn presents the theories of compelling characters such as Newton Crosland and Lois Waisbrooker and provides exciting new readings of well-known texts by Charlotte Brontë, Eliot, Martineau, and Corelli. An understanding of the Victorian fascination with mysticism, Willburn argues, leads to a better appreciation of cultural constructions of the citizen in England and of the public sphere. She introduces two key concepts against the backdrop of popular mysticism: "possessed individualism," a model for Victorian individualism based on spiritual possession, and "extra spheres," which complicate the traditional binary opposition of public and private. Together, these formulations urge us to rethink our views of Victorian political economy and gender as they pertain to mystical and religious practices.

Book Synopsis Evil Children in the Popular Imagination by : Karen J. Renner
Download or read book Evil Children in the Popular Imagination written by Karen J. Renner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-12-15 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on narratives with supernatural components, Karen J. Renner argues that the recent proliferation of stories about evil children demonstrates not a declining faith in the innocence of childhood but a desire to preserve its purity. From novels to music videos, photography to video games, the evil child haunts a range of texts and comes in a variety of forms, including changelings, ferals, and monstrous newborns. In this book, Renner illustrates how each subtype offers a different explanation for the problem of the “evil” child and adapts to changing historical circumstances and ideologies.
