Book excerpt: This thesis compares air/water two-phase flow regime transition models in zero gravity with data and makes recommendations for zero gravity models to incorporate into the RELAP5-3D thermal hydraulic computer code. Data from numerous researchers and experiments are compiled into a large database. A RELAP5-3D model is built to replicate the zero gravity experiments, and flow regime results from the RELAP5-3D code are compared with data. The comparison demonstrates that the current flow regime maps used in the computer code do not scale to zero gravity. A new flow regime map is needed for zero gravity conditions. Three bubbly-to-slug transition models and four slug-to-annular transition models are analyzed and compared with the data. A mathematical method is developed using least squares to objectively compare the accuracy of the models with the data. The models are graded by how well each represents the data. Agreement with data validates the recommendations made for changes to the RELAP5-3D computer code models. For smaller diameter tubes, Dukler0́9s bubbly-to-slug model best fits the data. For the larger tubes, the Drift Flux model is a better fit. The slug-to-annular transition is modeled best by Creare for small tubes and Reinarts for larger tubes. A major finding of this thesis work is that more air/water data is needed at equally distributed flow velocities and a greater variety of tube diameters. More data is specifically needed in the predicted transition regions made in this study.

Book excerpt: This research program is concerned with the development of self-consistent multidimensional two-fluid models which predict a wide variety of data and satisfy all relevant physical laws and constraints. If successful, these models can revolutionize the way in which two-phase lows are analyzed, since mechanistic, rather than empirical-based predictions should be possible. During this report period the research has focused on understanding the relationships between the interfacial closure laws and the onset of ill-posedness. In particular, it is now known that only the void wave eigenvalues can become complex, thus leading to ill-posedness. As a consequence, a detailed set of void wave data were taken and these data were compared with the two-fluid model we have developed. The kinematic void wave data was well predicted, and, in addition, a much faster void wave was also measured. The faster void wave was associated with bubble clusters which were observed to form due to hydrodynamic effects. Significantly, these clusters were found to be the precursors of Taylor bubble formation (i.e., the bubbly-to-slug flow regime transition). Moreover, it was found that for certain conditions, these void waves were amplified, thus triggering flow regime transition. 2 refs.

Book excerpt: The next generation of nuclear safety analysis computer codes will require detailed modeling of two-phase fluid flow. The most complete and fundamental model used for these calculations is known as the two-fluid model. It is the most accurate of the two-phase models since it considers each phase independently and links the two phases together with six conservation equations. A major drawback is that the current two-fluid model, when area-averaged to create a one-dimensional model, becomes ill-posed as an initial value problem when the gas and liquid velocities are not equal. The importance of this research lies in obtaining a model that overcomes this difficulty. It is desired to develop a modified one-dimensional two-fluid model for horizontal flow that accounts for the pressure difference between the two phases, due to hydrostatic head, with the implementation of a void fraction distribution parameter. With proper improvement of the one-dimensional two-fluid model, the next generation of nuclear safety analysis computer codes will be able to predict, with greater precision, the key safety parameters of an accident scenario. As part of this research, an improved version of the one-dimensional two-fluid model for horizontal flows was developed. The model was developed from a theoretical point of view with the three original distribution parameters simplified down to a single parameter. The model was found to greatly enhance the numerical stability (hyperbolicity) of the solution method. With proper modeling of the phase distribution parameter, a wide range of flow regimes can be modeled. This parameter could also be used in the future to eliminate the more subjective flow regime maps that are currently implemented in today's multiphase computer codes. By incorporating the distribution parameter and eliminating the flow regime maps, a hyperbolic model is formed with smooth transitions between various flow regimes, eliminating the unphysical oscillations that may occur near transition boundaries in today's multiphase computer codes.
