Download or read book Next Stop written by Ivan Sanchez and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-10-14 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the safety of New York City's news headlines, Next Stop is a train ride into the heart of the Bronx during the late eighties and early nineties at the height of the crack epidemic, a tumultuous time when hip-hop was born and money-hungry slumlords were burning down apartment buildings with tenants still inside. From one stop to the next, this gritty memoir follows Ivan Sanchez and his crew on their search for identity and an escape from poverty in a stark world where street wars and all-night symphonies of crime and drug-fueled mayhem were as routine as the number 4 train. In the game, the difference between riches and ruin was either a bullet or a lucky turn away. Almost driven insane by the poverty, despair, and senseless violence, Ivan left it all behind and moved to Virginia, but the grotesque images and voices of the dead continued to haunt him. This book honors the memories of those who died. At times heartbreakingly sad and brutal, Next Stop shares with a whole new generation the insights and hard lessons Ivan learned.

Those contained within this volume are among the shorter ones; they are also some of the most well known such as The Heart Sutra and The Diamond Sutra. The Prajnaparamita texts are central to the Mahayana, the Great Vehicle tradition of Buddhism which today includes the Zen and Tibetan traditions. They are a magnificent work which offer guidance to those who wish to plumb the depths of their own mind and come face to face with the reality of existence by realising the truth of the Buddha's deep teachings on Emptiness and Great Wisdom. Dr Edward Conze (1904-1979) was the author of many books and the translator of much of the Prajnaparamita texts. He served on the faculties of several universities in Britain and the United States including Oxford, London, and California. Not only was he a great Buddhist scholar but also a serious practitioner, and his translations are very highly regarded.

Download or read book Blind Savior, False Prophet written by Joseph DeMarco and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2008-08 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a real life espionage story. The author of this biography was lucky to live very unruly times in his country of origin, Cuba, during the last 71 years. He was able to see the history of those years from a different point of view: from his fight as a revolutionary to becoming a master spy. As a young man he experience the passion of making a revolution, and as a mature man he felt the moral depression that cause him the realization that the deaths of his comrades were in vain. In the process he discovered new, beautiful and rich countries and became homesick for many years. He saw himself as a hero, loved and admired by his family and his fellow citizens at the beginning of his adult life, and now sees himself as an old man waiting for death as a loner and deserter of his youth's ideals. This is a real life story about a human being trapped sometimes by his own decisions and in other occasions by the ironies of destiny, a person fighting to survive, and at the same time loving and taking care of his family the best he could. This is a real life story about political deceive and human miseries; about how one can fool oneself in life regarding what is right or wrong. But it is also the confirmation that at times one can achieve a goal if one does try hard.

Download or read book Zen and Now written by Mark Richardson and published by Vintage Canada. This book was released on 2009-09-08 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the Trail of Robert Pirsig's Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Zen and Now is the story of a story that will appeal to the 5 million readers of the original and serve as an initiation to a whole new generation. Since its original publication in 1968, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance: An Inquiry into Values has touched whole generations of readers with its serious attempt to define “quality” in a world that seems indifferent to the responsibilities that quality brings. Mark Richardson expands that journey with an investigation of his own – to find the enigmatic author of Zen and the Art, ask him a few questions, and place his classic book in context. The result manages to be a biography of Pirsig himself – in the discovery of an unknown life of madness, murder and eventual resolution – and a splendid meditation on creativity and problem-solving, sanity and insanity.

Book excerpt: 'Escapism of a high order.' INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY 'A slyly intelligent page turner.' PUBLISHERS WEEKLY AN AURELIO ZEN MYSTERY When a group of Austrian cavers in the Italian Alps come across human remains at the bottom of a deep shaft, everyone assumes the death was accidental - until the still unidentified body is stolen from the morgue and the Defence Ministry puts a news blackout on the case. The whole affair has the whiff of political intrigue. That's enough to interest Aurelio Zen's boss at the Interior Ministry, who wants to know who is hiding what from who and why. The search for the truth leads Zen into the murky history of post-war Italy and obscure corners of modern-day society to uncover the truth about a crime that everyone thought was as dead and buried as the victim. 'As the plot quickens, we are soon deep in Dibdin's favourite territory: the murky political conflicts of Italy's past and the oily chicanery of its present.' SUNDAY TIMES 'Dibdin's misanthropic wit finds plenty to play with.' GUARDIAN 'A terrific detective story.' 5* reader review 'Beautifully written . . . You get a real sense of the turbulence in the Italian state during that era.' 5* reader review 'MEDUSA is the best I've read so far, with a complex but pleasing plot.' 5* reader review PRAISE FOR MICHAEL DIBDIN AND THE INSPECTOR ZEN SERIES: 'He wrote with real fire.' IAN RANKIN 'A maestro of crime writing.' SUNDAY TIMES 'One of the genre's finest stylists . . . And Zen himself is a masterly creation: he is anti-heroic and pragmatic but obstinate, cunning and positively burdened with integrity.' GUARDIAN 'Dibdin tells a rollicking good tale that you want both to read fast, because of its gripping storyline, and to linger over, to savour the evocative descriptions of place and mood.' INDEPENDENT 'One of British crime fiction's most distinguished and distinctive voices.' ANDREW TAYLOR 'Dibdin has a gift for shocking the unshockable reader.' Ruth Rendell 'Zen is one of the greatest creations of contemporary crime fiction.' OBSERVER 'I love the way these books capture the atmosphere and contradictions of Italy.' 5* reader review 'Aurelio Zen novels are a great treat.' 5* reader review 'There is no better writer than Dibdin. His books are a joy to read.' 5* reader review 'Love these books . . . I am sure you will get hooked too!' 5* reader review
