The letter of the congregation, as it bears a testimony to the character of the venerable deceased, equally honourable to him and to them; selves, from those who once enjoyed the benefit of his instructions, I here take the liberty to subjoin. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Works of Victor Hugo These Greek capitals, black with age, and quite deeply graven in the stone, with I know not what signs peculiar to Gothic caligraphy imprinted upon their forms and upon their attitudes, as though with the purpose of revealing that it had been a hand of the Middle Ages which had inscribed them there, and especially the fatal and melancholy meaning contained in them, struck the author deeply. He questioned himself; he sought to divine who could have been that soul in torment which had not been willing to quit this world without leaving this stigma of crime or unhappi ness upon the brow of the ancient church. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Public Ministry of Jesus I shall try to tell you the story of Jesus, in simple, human terms, having due regard to its historical setting. It is a wonderful life, and has had more power over men and women than any other life ever passed on this earth. To me it is very real, and if I can make it as real to you I shall be satisfied. I shall follow in the main the Gospel of Mark, because it is the oldest, hence the nearest to the facts, the simplest, and has the most continuous story. The Galilean Ministry The opening note of time, however, comes from Luke, who begins his narrative in these words: "Now in the 15th year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, Pontius Pilate being the Governor of Judea and Herod the Tetrarch of Galilee, the word of God came to John, the Son of Zacharias, in the wilderness" - who cried to the people, "Repent ye, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ's Zeal for God's House: A Sermon Preached at the Opening of the Synod of the Presbyterian Church of the Lower Provinces of British North America, June 26, 1861 As to the precise import of the expression house of God we are familiar with its application to the place where the peo ple of God are accustomed to meet for his public worship and the generations under the Levitical Dispensation were no less fa miliar with its application, first to the tabernacle, and subsequent 1y to the temple, to which they were accustomed to resort as the place where God shone forth from between the cherubim; and where, in connexion with the typical sacrifices which were there presented, his people poured out their hearts before him as their covenant God and Father. In this application, however, we need to remember that God dwelleth not in temples made with men's hands. He himself says, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool where is the house that ye build unto me and where is the place of my rest? And he points out the true import of the words, when he adds, but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word. The heart of his people, whether viewed individually or collectively, is the true house of God. It is of his church whom he hath low ed with an everlasting love, and whom he hath redeemed not with corruptible things such as silver and gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, that he says, This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell: for I have desired it. The erection of this building is not yet completed. Some of its livmg stones have been prepared, and have been removed from this earth to the heavenly Jerusalem, others are in the course of being hcwn and fitted for their intended place. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Self-Sacrifice: The Grandest Manifestation of the Divine, and the True Principle of Christian Life; Or the Lost Power of Christian Zeal Restored to the Church Scepticism is abroad; there is a rustling among the dry bones, a shaking of those things which are to be removed, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. Anxiety is felt, fears expressed, and efforts put forth to meet what is regarded as the demand of the day. At all times there has been, is, and will be, commotion, agitation, and misgiving, and in such times it is especially incumbent on truth-seekers to distinguish between the real and enduring, the mutable and the evanescent of truth, between the body and soul of revelation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons on the Ministry and Ordinances This great and good Bishop had very early addicted himself to piety, and a religious course of life; and as his piety was early, so it was very eminent and conspicuous in all the parts and stations of his life. As he had formed such good resolutions, he made suitable improvements upon them; and they at length grew up into such settled habits, that all his actions savored of nothing but piety and religion. His holy example was a very great ornament to our Church, and he honored his profession and function, by zealously discharging all the duties thereof. How remarkable was his piety towards God! What an awful sense of the Divine Majesty did he always express! How did he delight in his worship and service, and frequent his house of prayer! How great was his charity to men, how earnestly was he concerned for their welfare, as his pathetic addresses to them in his Discourses plainly discover I How did the Christian spirit run through all his actions, and what a wonderful pattern was he of primitive purity, holiness, and devotion! How his mind was affected at his first entrance into holy Orders, may be seen by the Thoughts on Religion, which were about that time drawn up by him, for the settling his principles, and the conduct of his life. And what might not be expected from one who had laid so good a foundation? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. True, paganism has lost none of its sullen resistance to the truth; and popery is what it was in the days of its Gregorys and Johns; and Islamism is what it was in the days of its Omars; but the Spirit of might has departed from them all, and the ways of access to their swarming millions are Open; and we now, more than ever, need an earnest ministry to lead on the Church to enter these ways and to occupy the land. And the Objects of this volume are, in the spirit of brotherly love, to incite the entire ministry of the Church Oi God to higher zeal and earnestness in its great work; to make it more efficient at home and abroad; to raise it up to the place which God design ed it should hold in the world's civilization, and to Show to the Church its duty to the ministry. Dietterich I have often thought it might be the means of accomplishing at least some good, to publish a short sketch of my experience-life and labors, in the ministry. Not in a boasting spirit - for I have nothing whereof to boast - but as a wonder of grace. I have frequently been greatly encour aged, While reading the history of others, and I hope this little volume may be the means of in spiring new courage and infusing new zeal into the heart of the tempted and tried Christian and even influence sinners, to seek the God of all grace. J You have not been accustomed to hear from me what are called minister's Anniversary-sermons. On one occasion only - it was in the Summer of 1862 - an attempt was made to sum up, and review, the work of the few preceding years. But, now, as a score of years have elapsed since I took charge of this pulpit, it would seem to be altogether proper to take some notice of God's dealings with us, and of the changes, whether for better or worse, which have occurred in the congregation. First Visit to Princeton. My first visit to Princeton was made in the year 1849, to attend the inauguration of Dr. James W. Alexander (with whom I had been, for several years, a co-presbyter in New York) as Professor of Ecclesiastical History and Church Government, in the Theological Seminary. I had the advantage of having, as a companion, another co-presbyter, the Rev. John Goldsmith, D. D., of Newtown, Long Island, who was a graduate of the College in 1815, in the same Class with Dr. Hodge, and was matriculated with him in the same Class in the Seminary, in 1816. He was a man very devoted to Princeton and its institutions, and abounded with recollections of them, as they were, when he resided here, and with the traditions he had received. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Select Works of Archbishop Leighton: Prepared for the Practical Use of Private Christians; With an Introductory View of the Life, Character, and Writings of the Author It was not strange that a man ofhis uncommon mildness should find his. Situation an unpleasant one. Besides having a predi lection for the Episcopalian form of worship, he could not en dure the spiritual despotism nor the fierce zeal prevalent among the members of the Presbyterian Church of Scotland. From one anecdote it would seem that his brethren in the ministry were but ill pleas ed with his freedom from the intolerant and passionate zeal of the times. In a synod he was publicly reprimanded for not preach° mg up the times. Who, he asked, does preach up the times? It was answered that all the brethren did it. Then, he rejoined, if all of you preach up the times, you may surely allow one poor brother to preach up Christ Jesus and eternity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christ's Masterpiece: A Study of the One True Church For many years St. Francis Xavier (College) Church has been accustomed to help towards the sanctification of the Lenten season by a series of lectures on doctrinal subjects. Two years ago I decided, as the appointed lecturer, to enter the field of apologetics and to take up the study of the foundations of our Christian faith. The lack of clear-cut and definite knowledge of some of our Catholic people and the misty notions about religion so common outside of the Church were reasons enough for the choice of such a subject. Accordingly in the series of two years ago I treated of Christ's Masterpiece, and studied Catholicity, as being Christianity in the concrete. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Building a Working Church This book is written for all Builders of the Church, whether they be ministers or laymen, whether they build on her material or her spiritual side. Perfect or imperfect, the Church is the visible body of Christ, and therefore is deserving of the highest consideration. The author is convinced that strength and numbers can be added to the Church much more rapidly than they have been in the past, and that it is the supreme duty of Christians now living to make these additions. There is not a theory in the book. Experience has been gathered from country and city missions, from churches in villages, towns and cities. Only plans that have proved their value over and over again are included. The author feels safe in guaranteeing results when the work suggested is enthusiastically done. A church has done only half her work when she has maintained herself. As a man keeps himself in health that he may do his life work, so a church should maintain herself that she may do the work committed to her by her Lord. Beginning at Jerusalem the whole world must be evangelized. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
