Book excerpt: Following Calvin's intent with the Institutes, this book displays the coherence, trustworthiness, and glory of biblical truth for all ages. We hope these readings will awaken readers to the relevance of Calvin's theology, humble them by the depth of Calvin's insights, and challenge them in their progress in the Christian life. Most of all, we hope they discover that exploring the Institutes means following Calvin as he follows Christ into a deeper, Bible-saturated devotion to the triune God. The content of the proposed book is adapted from the 2009 "Blogging Through the Institutes" project hosted by reformation21.org, the online magazine of the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals.

Book excerpt: The author of Desiring God reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Includes a study guide for individual and small-group use. Isn’t it true—we really don’t know someone until we understand what makes that person happy? And so it is with God! What does bring delight to the happiest Being in the universe? John Piper writes, that it’s only when we know what makes God glad that we’ll know the greatness of His glory. Therefore, we must comprehend “the pleasures of God.” Unlike so much of what is written today, this is not a book about us. It is about the One we were made for—God Himself. In this theological masterpiece—chosen by World Magazine as one of the 20th Century’s top 100 books, John Piper reveals the biblical evidence to help us see and savor what the pleasures of God show us about Him. Then we will be able to drink deeply—and satisfyingly—from the only well that offers living water. What followers of Jesus need now, more than anything else, is to know and love—behold and embrace—the great, glorious, sovereign, happy God of the Bible. “This is a unique and precious book that everybody should read more than once.” —J.I. PACKER, Regent College, Vancouver, British Columbia

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the concept of 'zeal' in three Pauline texts (Rom 10:2; Gal 1:14; Phil 3:6) as a way-in to discussion of the 'New Perspective' on Paul. The concept of zeal has been discussed in a sustained way by James D. G. Dunn, who argues that Paul was drawing on a long and venerable tradition of Jewish zeal for the nation of Israel, that is, a concern to maintain Israel's distinction from the surrounding nations by defending and reinforcing its boundaries. Ortlund interacts with Dunn, agreeing that this concern for distinctiveness was a crucial, and neglected, concern of Paul's before his conversion. Nevertheless, Ortlund contends that Dunn has presented an overly narrow understanding of Pauline zeal that does not sufficiently locate zeal in the broader picture of general obedience to Torah in Jewish tradition. As such, Ortlund shows in this work that zeal refers most immediately to general obedience to Torah - including, but not to be centrally circumscribed as, ethnic distinction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mr. Bowles, in this excellent and stirring treatise, is addressing the Westminster Divines in their vigilant care for the common good of the church. He fights diligently against false and hypocritical, zeal. The Assembly had been called together to set down God’s truth as it concerns the settling of doctrine, worship, and church government for the good of Christ’s people. But in what method and manner should they set down such eternally important truths? As Bowles explains from John 2:17, “And his disciples remembered that it was written, “The zeal of thy house hath eaten me up,”” zeal is the manner that they must do all things for the glory of God. It is a hearty soul-work, for without true biblical zeal, there is no pleasing service rendered to the Christ. What will a cold, lazy, indifferent reformer accomplish? What would a group of cold, lazy, indifferent reformers ever accomplish? Annexed to this inspiring word on enacting zealous reformation, and setting down the character and work of zealous reformers, Bowles shows how church-reformation is a work of the largest extent, as that which concerns all professing churches, whose eternal happiness or misery will be the outcome of either exercising biblical zeal for the glory of God, or not. For biblical zeal, as it mimics the Lord Jesus Christ, is a holy ardor kindled by the Holy Spirit of God in the affections, improving a man to the utmost for God’s glory, and the church’s good; and it is without a doubt that church reformation calls for utmost zeal. Though Bowles spoke to the Assembly in this work, he took time, afterwards, to, as he said, “make bold a supply of that which at the time of the delivery he could not do.” So, this work is the expanded piece turned from a sermon into a treatise, which he enlarged. This work is not solely for the historical assembly, but all that would take up the mantle of reformation for the glory of Christ’s church. He covers what zeal is in church reform, over and against false zeal; how zeal is manifested in true reformers, what practical aspects zeal plays for the work of reformation, and then gives some uses to the doctrine. His word to preachers as reformers, the concluding section of the work, is something every preacher should hear. That preachers who desire to see Christ’s church flourish under the work of the Spirit ought to take up preaching that is zealous, compassionate, convincing (with conviction), sensible to the needs of the people, as frequent as possible, and with all gravity, to the glory of God and the good of the saints. Book excerpt: Christians know that God loves them, but can easily feel that he is perpetually disappointed and frustrated, maybe even close to giving up on them. As a result, they focus a lot—and rightly so—on what Jesus has done to appease God’s wrath for sin. But how does Jesus Christ actually feel about his people amid all their sins and failures? This book draws us to Matthew 11, where Jesus describes himself as “gentle and lowly in heart,” longing for his people to find rest in him. The gospel flows from God’s deepest heart for his people, a heart of tender love for the sinful and suffering. These chapters take readers into the depths of Christ’s very heart for sinners, diving deep into Bible passages that speak of who Christ is and encouraging readers with the affections of Christ for his people. His longing heart for sinners comforts and sustains readers in their up-and-down lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is holy zeal? From Revelation 3:19, “Be Zealous,” Ashe divides his work into 8 parts. Part 1 explains the text expounding on what Christ means in being zealous. Parts 2-3 briefly describe how zeal is to be exercised for good, and how it is to be exercised against evil. His main objective will come to light in parts 4 and 5, dealing with those who are not zealous – how they should be – and then teaches the motives by which Christians may be provoked to seek the increase of holy zeal in their life. In part 6 he covers the means to be used for obtaining zeal, with hindrances to be avoided, and then demonstrates all Gospel administrations, being rightly used as a means to increase true biblical zeal. In part 7 he gives nine rules to guide Christians to improve zeal in their life, and then ends in part 8 with an incitement to magistrates, ministers and private Christians to improve zeal, especially seen in not profaning the Sabbath, attendance on sacred ordinances, and that ministers may be encouraged to perform their duties for the betterment of the church and nation. Do you have a heart enflamed with zeal for God, true zeal, true biblical heat and spiritual fervor? If your outward performance of true religion stems from the inward change made by the Holy Spirit, then such zealous action on behalf of Christ is heartily commendable. True regenerate Christians should be taking heaven by storm, violently seizing the Kingdom of God by force, and pressing into the Kingdom with all their might. Yet, though there are those who glorify Christ in their religious zeal through obedience to the revealed word, there are also those who perform external religious acts remaining still unconverted. Those who are living under the eminent means of grace but possess a superficial affection to the things of God are called Gospel hypocrites, and their zeal is fake. They introduce a form of godliness but deny the power of God, and so the Apostle Paul says that, “from such turn away,” (2 Tim. 3:5). Ashe did not preach and write this treatise simply for the sake of being informative. He heartily desired to see the people of God in his day transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit towards a heated zeal for the means of grace. As Ashe will show, it is the command of Jesus Christ for every Christian church member to be zealous. This work is not a scan or facsimile, has been carefully transcribed by hand being made easy to read in modern English, and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book excerpt: There are so many religions and so many methods of worship: Can we all be right? Can we all be wrong? Can only one be right? This book does not attack Christianity. I always clarify that. It aims to promote the PRACTICE of Christianity at the expense of the RELIGION of Christianity. Its a fine line, but easy to understand if you see that Christianity is a way of life and not an exclusive club of individuals. For many years I went to church regularly and yet, sometimes I woke up feeling like nothing in the world made any sense. Everything seemed so complicated when it came to discussions on who was on the right path to worshipping God and whether or not my worship was acceptable to Him. I often wondered why God desired a relationship with me and yet, seemed to cloak Himself in impenetrable mystery. I couldnt make sense of why it was so much easier to go astray than to find Him until one morning when I felt the scales fall from my eyes. Every fibre of legacy knowledge Ive held from childhood was shaken and thrown down and replaced with an absolutely empty mind that God has been filling slowly. Emptiness had never felt so fulfilling, but now, it did. I had not actually come to the realisation of my much sought after answers. On the contrary, I suddenly had the right questions. Those questions set me on a path that led me straight to the intentions of the Almighty. Everything suddenly made sense and this book attempts to share some of my realisations. I also attempt to take you on the same questioning journey Ive embarked on. There are 3 cardinal things I believe you must appreciate in order to understand Gods intentions for mankind. In studying His word and seeking His face, all His intentions, actions and commands fulfill these 3 things. Since the creation of man: God has had one sole mission: RECONCILIATION He has had only one obstacle to achieving that intention: SIN He commands only one thing once the obstacle is surmounted: LOVE If you truly seek Him with an open heart, then you will certainly find Him and thats a promise from Him, not me.
