Book excerpt: For many years Tanzania was the darling of international aid agencies. During the 1970s it received more assistance per capita than any other nation in the world. And yet, the economy performed dismally: growth was negative, exports collapsed, and poverty increased massively. In the mid 1980s, however, the international community changed tacks and developed an approach based on conditionality and 'program ownership'. Since 1996 the country has grown steadily, and social conditions have improved significantly. This book provides an economic history of Tanzania, since independence in 1961. It covers the policies of African Socialism and the Arusha Declaration, the collapse of the early 1980s, the rocky relationships with the IMF, and the reforms of the 1990s and 2000s.

Book excerpt: If you've ever dreamed of casting off your worldly possessions and traveling to your heart's content, this story about two intrepid seniors will inspire you no matter your age. Michael and Debbie Campbell felt they had one more adventure in them before considering retirement in the traditional sense, so they filled two rolling duffel bags with life's essentials (including their own pillows) and hit the road. Three years later, having sold their home in Seattle, their "Senior Nomad" lifestyle has no end in sight. Ride along as they share tales of living full-time in Airbnbs in over 50 countries and pay tribute to the many hosts who not only helped them live daily life, but also offered unique opportunities to experience their cities. From the barber's chair in Dublin and the dentist's chair in Split, to a wild motorcycle ride in Athens, a peek behind the Soviet Curtain in Transnistria, and the demise of a chicken for dinner in Marrakech, hosts made the Campbell's dream of adventure come true. Discover how Debbie and Michael find their next Airbnb, how they get there, and the many ways they enjoy their new city just as the locals do. Learn their tips and tricks for using Airbnb and how they get the most out of each stay, all while spending little more than they would have spent settled into their rocking chairs in Seattle.

Book excerpt: Protection and sound management of coastal and marine areas are acknowledged as important mechanisms for alleviating poverty in the developing tropics. Tanzania has had considerable practical experience with a diversity of models that rely on private sector partnerships, community co-management regimes, and government-led initiatives for marine protection. 'Blueprint 2050' outlines a vision of what a protected area system could look like in 50 years. It draws on state-of-the-art ecosystem, socioeconomic, financial, and institutional background studies to paint a picture that emphasizes community-based adaptive co-management within a flexible system of eight protected area networks, one of which is the Exclusive Economic Zone. 'Blueprint 2050 is an impressive piece of professional work which addresses the plight of the many communities whose livelihoods depend on Tanzania's marine resources. Environmental conservation, sustainability, efficiency, good governance, and a pro-poor policy stance come out as key issues in pursuit of Tanzania's millennium development goals by these communities.' -- Hon Raphael OS Mollel, Senior Permanent Secretary Vice President's Office, United Republic of Tanzania 'It is my sincere hope that Blueprint 2050 will serve the intended purpose of promoting the devlopment of marine protected areas based on our current policies and legislation.' -- Hon Madam Rahma M Mshangama, Principal Secretary Ministry of Agriculture Natural Resources, Environment and Co-operatives (MANREC), Zanzibar

A person’s sense of well being is compounded of many elements including economic, political and social psychology. Poverty and inequality are aspects of a lack of well being in multiple dimensions and, this texts argues, development should be considered a process that overcomes these multiple deficiencies This book examines the advantages of analysing poverty and development by multi-discipline research. Economists, political sociologists and anthropologists put forward an idea of well being from their own perspective, using their own research material, while the editors argue in their introduction that bringing to bear of many disciplines can enrich the research output of all.

This book was released on 2023-03-30 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Government of the United Republic of Tanzania recognizes that sustainable development cannot be achieved without attaining gender equality; hence, gender is mainstreamed in all sectors, including the agriculture sector. This commitment is reflected in the national Constitution, national strategies, plans and policies such as the Tanzania Development Vision 2025, National Five-Year Development Plan 2016/17–2021/22, National Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty (NSGRP I and II), Women and Gender Development Policy of 2000 and the National Agriculture Policy of 2013. The agriculture sector employs nearly 66 percent of the workforce in the United Republic of Tanzania, thereby contributing to bringing the country closer to becoming a middle-income country. However, the sector, like all other sectors, is negatively impacted by the gender inequalities. To address the gender gaps in all sectors, including agriculture, the United Republic of Tanzania established the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children (MoHCDGEC) as the national institution to mainstream gender.

Book excerpt: This book aims at being a first rendering of the research conducted on the coattails of the SASS Project (Sustainable Agrifood Systems Strategies). The SASS Project was financed by the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), and it engaged a multidisciplinary team of agronomists, microbiologists, botanists, economists, sociologists and anthropologists. The purpose of the research was to map and to analyse the local nutritional systems of three East African areas – the Arusha's and the Iringa's in Tanzania and the Lake Naivasha's in Kenya – with an interdisciplinary, synergic and interactive approach. The project intends to investigate the agro-nutritional systems both from a techno-scientific and a socio-politic point of view, in order to provide a full overview of the situation by integrating the different results from all the disciplinary fields involved.
