Book Synopsis Tin Pan Alley and the Philippines by : Thomas P. Walsh
Download or read book Tin Pan Alley and the Philippines written by Thomas P. Walsh and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-04-04 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this innovative resource guide, Thomas P. Walsh has compiled a unique collection of some 1,400 published and unpublished American musical compositions relating in some way to the Philippines during the American colonial era in the country from 1898 to 1946. In preparing the guide, Walsh surveyed a wide array of sources: published songs listed in WorldCat, the online catalogs of sheet music collections of university libraries and major public and private research libraries, bibliographic compilations of popular music, the periodical literature on music and popular culture, published collections of “soldier songs,” and sheet music listed for sale on commercial auction websites. In addition, for the first time in the preparation of a research bibliography, the guide also identifies, from song registrations in the US Copyright Office’s Catalog of Copyright Entries (CCE), 48 years of musical compositions relating to the Philippines. In systematically going through the CCE, year by year, Walsh discovered hundreds of unpublished songs written by average Americans expressing their varied views about historical events and their personal experiences relating to America’s distant colony in Southeast Asia. Of the 1,400 chronologically-listed songs included in the guide, most will be new materials for scholars and students alike to study. Songs like “Ma Little Cebu Maid,” “My Own Manila Sue,” “My Fillipino Belle,” “Down on the Philippine Isles,” “Beside the Pasig River,” “My Philippino Pearl,” and “I Want a Filipino Man” were all published and widely promoted by Tin Pan Alley and were performed on stage and listened to at home on records and piano rolls across America. The lyrics often illustrate popular American attitudes, from shrilly patriotic numbers about the Battle of Manila Bay and, later, the Fall of Bataan and Corregidor to wistful, romantic, and even charming reminiscences of happy days spent in “old” Manila to racially charged pieces rife with deprecating stereotypes of Filipinos. This guide reprints a number of these hard-to-find song lyrics, making them available to readers for the first time in over a century. In addition to including the lyrics to a number of the songs, the guide also provides copyright registration numbers and dates of registration for many of the published and unpublished songs. Also provided are some 700 “notes” on particular songs and over 750 links that provide direct access to bibliographic records or even digital copies of the sheet music in libraries and collections. Exhaustive in its scope, Tin Pan Alley and the Philippines is an invaluable research resource for scholars and students of American history, Pacific studies, popular culture, and ethnomusicology.

Book excerpt: This edited book serves as the first instalment of a two-part title that aims to provide an academic exploration of the contemporary issues and perspectives on tourism in the Philippines. With a strong geographical focus, this book is the first country-focused volume under the series, Perspectives on Asian Tourism. Comprised of chapters based on conceptual and empirical research, this book aims to develop a foundational and practical knowledge base on Philippine tourism management. The chapters cover a range of national, regional, and local tourism management issues that cut across the following themes:• Governance issues in Philippine tourism destinations• The Tourism Act of 2009 • Tourism impacts and sustainability• Innovative tourism development strategies• Tourism marketing campaigns (i.e., It's More Fun in the Philippines!)• Philippine tourism and the ASEAN integration• Tourism and hospitality education in the PhilippinesThe contributions are drawn from the works of Filipino academics based in the Philippines and overseas institutions, and international academics researching tourism issues in the Philippines. The chapters are informed by a diverse set of disciplines including, but not limited to tourism studies, hospitality management, marketing, human resources management, public policy, environmental management, community development, and education. This edited book is divided into four parts: first, an introduction to the development of policy and contemporary management issues in Philippine tourism; second, nature-based tourism and the natural environment; third, product development and branding; and fourth, accreditation and industry standards. The volume culminates with a synthesis of the progress of Philippine tourism development and management implications using the cases and experiences outlined in the chapters. This book serves as a systematic guide to the current state of tourism development and management in the Philippines, and as essential reading for undergraduate and postgraduate students, researchers, educators, and, more importantly, tourism policy-makers.

Book Synopsis Ibero-Asian Creoles by : Hugo C. Cardoso
Download or read book Ibero-Asian Creoles written by Hugo C. Cardoso and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Starting in 1498, contact between Ibero-Romance and Asian languages has taken place along a vast stretch of the coastlines of continental and insular Asia, producing a string of contact varieties which are among the least visible in the field of Creole Studies. This volume, the first one dedicated to the Portuguese- and Spanish-lexified creoles of Asia, brings together comparative studies on various issues across the Ibero-Asian creoles and beyond, by specialists in these languages. This type of cross-linguistic analysis allows progress on many fronts, including the reconstruction of past stages of the languages, the explanation of observed similarities and differences, the identification and consolidation of typological/taxonomic clusters, or the assessment of the linguistic effects of different contact equations. The volume provides a timely window onto aspects of current research on the Ibero-Asian creoles, including unsettled debates and ways in which their study can contribute to advance several areas of linguistic enquiry.

So side by side occur the Revolution of ’96, the demos against Marcos in the ’80s, and banditry in the boondocks in the days of the Guardia Civil. Visayan scenery in Spanish times will conjure up the Silliman summer workshops of the 1960s, while the career of Leon Kilat is simultaneous with the writing of a screenplay based on his life. This hero who becomes a sacristan, who becomes a Singer salesman, who becomes a circus performer, who becomes a revolucionario, is a good a metaphor for the Filipino as any other.

Book Synopsis Cities and Nationhood by : Ian Morley
Download or read book Cities and Nationhood written by Ian Morley and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2018-06-30 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Treaty of Paris in 1898 initiated America’s administration of the Philippines. By 1905, Manila had been replanned and the city of Baguio built as expressions of colonial sovereignty and as symbols of a society disassociating itself from its hitherto “uncivilized” existence. Against this historical backdrop, Ian Morley undertook a thorough investigation to elucidate the meaning of modern American city planning in the Philippines and examine its dissemination throughout the archipelago with respect to colonial governmental ideals, social advancement, and the shaping of national identity. By focusing on the forces of the early years of American colonial rule, Cities and Nationhood offers a historical paradigm that not only re-grounds our grasp of Philippine cities, but also illuminates complex national identity movements and city design practices that were evident elsewhere during the early 1900s. Cities and Nationhood places the design of Philippine cities within a framework of America’s distinct religious and racial identity, colonial politics, and local cultural expansion. In doing so, it expands knowledge about city planning—its influence and role—within national development by providing valuable insights into the nature of Philippine society during an era when America felt morally compelled to enact progressive civilization by instruction and example. Producing a new understanding of the role of America’s colonial mission, the City Beautiful modern of urban design and Philippine cities, and the inclusions and exclusions designed into their built forms, the author addresses two fundamental intellectual matters. First, the work recontextualizes the planning history of Philippine cities. Analysis of the ideals of nationalism and civility at a key period in Philippine history shifts scholarship on the plans of Philippine cities. Second, the book offers an example of how studies of city design can profitably embrace additional geographical, cultural, and chronological territories in order to rethink the abstract and tangible meaning of arranging urban places after major governmental changes and identity transitions have occurred.

Book Synopsis Ottoman-Southeast Asian Relations (2 vols.) by : Ismail Hakkı Kadı
Download or read book Ottoman-Southeast Asian Relations (2 vols.) written by Ismail Hakkı Kadı and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-11-04 with total page 1095 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ottoman-Southeast Asian Relations: Sources from the Ottoman Archives, is a product of meticulous study of İsmail Hakkı Kadı, A.C.S. Peacock and other contributors on historical documents from the Ottoman archives. The work contains documents in Ottoman-Turkish, Malay, Arabic, French, English, Tausug, Burmese and Thai languages, each introduced by an expert in the language and history of the related country. The work contains documents hitherto unknown to historians as well as others that have been unearthed before but remained confined to the use of limited scholars who had access to the Ottoman archives. The resources published in this study show that the Ottoman Empire was an active actor within the context of Southeast Asian experience with Western colonialism. The fact that the extensive literature on this experience made limited use of Ottoman source materials indicates the crucial importance of this publication for future innovative research in the field. Contributors are: Giancarlo Casale, Annabel Teh Gallop, Rıfat Günalan, Patricia Herbert, Jana Igunma, Midori Kawashima, Abraham Sakili and Michael Talbot
