Book excerpt: Excerpt from Youth's History of the United States, Designed for Intermediate Classes in Public and Private Schools 1st. It is arranged in the catechetical form, and contains all the important facts of American History, systematized in such a manner that the pupil advances with profit and pleasure. 2d. Maps, with special reference to the matter, are introduced, with geographical exercises, affording the learner a knowledge of the localities of battle-grounds, forts, &c., mentioned in history. 3d. The Review of each year, or period, will be found very serviceable in rendering more impressive the parts over which the learner has just passed. A valuable feature here is, that the questions in the Review are not only varied in form, but the questions and answers of the preceding exercises are reversed in the Review: - thus, in the exercises - "In what year was America discovered? Ans.1492." The Review Question would be, - "For what is the year 1492 memorable?" 4th. As beginners are so often perplexed and discouraged in their efforts to commit to memory the dates, these are inclosed in parentheses; so that they may be omitted until the learner has acquired a thorough knowledge of the events. 5th. The book contains Biographical Sketches of all persons who have been prominently identified with the history of our country. The importance of this addition to a history is very apparent. Throughout the preparation of this work, the most reliable and popular authorities have been consulted. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States for Schools The function of both the writer and the teacher of his tory is to explain the meaning of human life as revealed in the records of the past. In the case of both the historian and the teacher much depends upon a nice discrimination in choosing typical facts, for their nature rather than their number Should be the guiding principle. This is especially true in the teaching of history in grammar grades, where the purpose is not so much to acquire a considerable body of knowledge as to develop in the pupil an interest in history and a taste for historical reading. In this book care has been taken not only to select typical events but so to group them that their full value may be appreciated as causes or as results. These are intended, in the Questions for first place, to guide the pupil in mastering his lesson, to make him test sd' his understanding of the subject by analyzing and reasoning about his facts, and by associating them with related facts. The teacher will also find these questions helpful to him in preparing and hearing a recitation. The Study by Topics which follows the questions is meant chiefly to Study by topics. Aid the teacher in conducting a recitation, or, at least, a review ofa recita tion. The topical method of recitation develops the pupil's power of grasping and holding each branch ofa subject in its entirety. But it can not be used to the exclusion of the use of questions and answers without danger ofits degenerating, onthe one hand, into an inadequate statement, or, on the other, into a mere repetition of the words of the text-book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Juvenile American History, for Primary Schools While the leading outlines of the following work, after Part First, are essentially the same as in' the Second Book, or History of the United States, yet the filling up is materially different - consisting mostly of those illustrative and morally instructive incidents which give to history the charm of romance, without its falsity. The work is designed, especially, to interest the young in the subject of which it treats, and thereby to prepare the way for farther and more impor tant acquisitions in the general details and philosophy of our history.
