Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Philosophy for General Readers and Young People The present work has its origin in an attempt to comply with a suggestion which has frequently been made to me, that I should prepare an abridged edition of my translation of Ganot's Elements de Physique, which could be used for purposes of more elementary instruction than that work, and in which the use of mathematical formulae would be dispensed with. But I soon found that to do anything of the kind which would be more than a mere series of extracts would be very difficult, and hence I turned my attention to another book by the same author, which has had a very extensive circulation in France, his Cours elementaire de Physique, and this I have taken as the basis of the present book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Philosophy: For Common and High Schools The great aim of this little book is to present the most elementary facts of Natural. Philosophy, in such a way as to exercise the child constantly in observing phenomena and in drawing inferences from what he observes. Whenever a child is old enough to ask such questions, as, "What makes the thunder," or, "Where does the rain come from," or to exclaim "How pretty the clouds are this evening," it is old enough to begin the study of natural philosophy. When such questions are asked the mind is awake to see the phenomena of nature, and is ready to receive instruction. They show the presence of a desire to know, and the absence of power to learn without assistance; and in this way they lead us to believe that the time has come when the work of instruction should begin. Moreover, the study of natural philosophy is easy, and interesting to young pupils, because, when properly presented, it brings new sights to the eye, and new sounds the ear, in a way to be especially pleasant to children. The simplest experiments awaken enthusiasm in the mind of a child, and such as be may he able to repeat by himself are the source of the greatest delight. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Philosophy The following Treatise was originally designed to serve as a handbook or companion to the lectures on Natural Philosophy, delivered to the junior division in the Normal School. Although numerous text-books on the subject were already in existence, it was found that they were either too abstruse and technical for beginners, or too general and superficial to be of much practical use. The aim of the present little work is to occupy a position between these extremes - to present the leading facts of the science in a form so concise as to be readily remembered, and at the same time to give that thorough drilling upon the principles which is absolutely essential to their full comprehension. As a hand-book to lectures fully illustrated by apparatus, it was not necessary to introduce many wood-cuts, and accordingly they have been given only where absolutely required. The chief peculiarity of this book consists in the introduction, to a large extent, of problems calculated to impart that intimate and practical knowledge of the facts and principles of Mechanical Science, without which the student's information on the subject is, comparatively speaking, useless. How frequently do we meet with a pupil who has read carefully through one of the common text books on Natural Philosophy without acquiring any very clear or definite ideas of the science! Book excerpt: Excerpt from Philosophy in Sport Made Science in Earnest: Being an Attempt to Implant in the Young Mind the First Principles of Natural Philosophy by the Aid of the Popular Toys and Sports of Youth It is scarcely necessary to offer any apology for the conversational plan of instruction; the success of Mrs. Marcet's dialogues has placed its value beyond dispute. It may, however, be observed, that this species of composition may be executed in two different ways, either as direct conversation, where none but the speakers appear, which is the method used by Plato; or as the recital of a con versation, where the author himself appears, and gives an account of what passed in discourse, which is the plan generally adopted by Cicero. The reader is aware, that Mrs Marcet, in her Con versations on Philosophy, ' has adopted the former, while Miss Edgeworth, in her Harry and Lucy, ' has preferred the latter method. In composing the present work I have followed the plan of the last-mentioned authoress. Its advantages over the more direct conversational style appear to con sist in allowing occasional remarks, which come more aptly from the author than from any of the characters engaged in the dialogue. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Natural Philosophy: For Schools and General Readers This book is intended to supply the widely felt want of a work at once easy enough for a class reading-book and precise enough for a text-book. Great pains have been taken to make every statement as plain as possible, and to put every sentence into the form which will render it easiest to understand at first hearing. Familiar language whenever available has been preferred to the use of technical terms, as it is not desirable to encumber begin ners with any names beyond what they need for con veniently expressing their ideas. Algebraic formulae have been altogether excluded. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
