Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a sharply critical view of contemporary society with a searing indictment of our morally and intellectually bankrupt educational system. Uniquely, the book contains both the original version of David Purpel's highly influential Moral and Spiritual Crisis in Education, first published in 1989, as well as an updated critique of that work - reflections from our current times of growing despair about the directions of education and the nation. Reflections on the Moral and Spiritual Crisis in Education focuses on the possibility - and necessity - of generating hope through the redemptive and energizing power of the human spirit.

Book excerpt: Mirror of the Soul is a reference to the precious metal silver and its superior reflective abilities. Silver jewelry reflects ones personality and silver instruments, which render the purest tones, have the ability to reflect ones soul. Classical flutist Tania M. DeVizia uses her silver flute as a tool to connect with the divine and thus mirror her soul. In this book, she merges theology and science, time and eternity and hands-on healing with sound healing. She analyzes and reflects upon the five roles of Jesus when he walked this earth and describes the manner in which music and art mirror His roles of Good Shepherd, Healer and Miracle Worker, Carpenter and Stone Mason, Fisher of Men and Son of God. Her text reflects her quest for truth. She believes we have an innate desire to reflect the highest ideals of the Creator in all our works of art. The words on these pages mirror the soul of a flutist who enjoys listening, observing, analyzing, hearing, and sharing her insights with others.

Levine analyzes the extensive critical reception of Monet and the artist's own prolific writings in the context of the story of Narcissus, popular in late nineteenth-century France. Through a careful blending of psychoanalytical theory and historical study, Levine identifies narcissism and obsession as driving forces in Monet's art and demonstrates how we derive meaning from the accumulated verbal responses to an artist's work.

It is a creative and sometimes shocking examination of modern society and the improbable consequences of technological progress. The episodes - typically set in an alternative present, or the near future - usually have a dark and satirical twist that provokes intense question both of the self and society at large. These kind of philosophical provocations are at the very heart of the show. Philosophical reflections on Black Mirror draws upon thinkers such as Friedrich Nietzsche, Pierre Hadot and Michel Foucault to uncover how Black Mirror acts as 'philosophical television' questioning human morality and humanity's vulnerability when faced with the inexorable advance of technology.

Book excerpt: "Where does God live?" Has your child ever asked a tough question about life or faith that requires you to explain how your beliefs fit with modern day science? This devotional book for children is unique because it is authored by a mainline protestant pastor, originally trained as a chemist. Rev. Dr. Carmelo Santos integrates science, faith, and ancient wisdom into 40 reflections for children to focus on the wonder and mystery behind everyday life. Weaving together scientific facts with inspiring stories, these reflections offer helpful perspectives to locate God in potentially awkward and inevitable topics (such as evolution vs. creation, the big bang, suffering, divorce, hell, and more). While the language is geared towards children approximately 8 to 12 years old, parents and caregivers of all ages will appreciate this book as a resource to navigate modern day faith. The black and white illustrations by artist Régine Daniels are crisp and appealing to older children. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to children and youth ministries in the Caribbean Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA).

Book excerpt: The rise of youth is among the most dramatic stories of modern China. Since the last years of the Qing dynasty, youth has been made a new agent of history in Chinese intellectuals’ visions of national rejuvenation through such tremendously popular notions as “young China” and “new youth.” The characterization of a young protagonist with a developmental story has also shaped the modern Chinese novel. Young China takes youth as a central literary motif that was profoundly related to the ideas of nationhood and modernity in twentieth-century China. A synthesis of narrative theory and cultural history, it combines historical investigations of the origin and development of the modern Chinese youth discourse with close analyses of the novelistic construction of the Chinese Bildungsroman, which depicts the psychological growth of youth with a symbolic allusion to national rejuvenation. Negotiating between self and society, ideal and action, and form and reality, such a narrative manifests as well as complicates the various political and cultural symbolisms invested in youth through different periods of modern Chinese history. In this story of young China, the restless, elusive, and protean image of youth both perpetuates and problematizes the ideals of national rejuvenation.

Book excerpt: To young Christians of the world, Pope Francis has a message for you: "Christ is alive, and he wants you to be alive!" In his fourth apostolic exhortation, Christus Vivit, Pope Francis encapsulates the work of the 2018 synod of bishops on "Young People, The Faith, and Vocational Discernment." Pope Francis has always had a special relationship with young people, and in his fatherly love for you he shows that: You can relate to young people in Scripture who made a difference You identify with the Christ who is always young You face difficult issues in the world today You yearn for the truth of the Gospel You are capable of amazing things when you respond to the Gospel You learn and grow with help from the faithful of all generations You need bold and creative youth ministry You can discover who God made you to be You are urged to pray for discernment Christus Vivit is written for and to young people, but Pope Francis also wrote it for the entire Church, because, as he says, reflecting on our young people inspires us all. "May the Holy Spirit urge you on as you run this race. The Church needs your momentum, your intuitions, your faith. We need them! And when you arrive where we have not yet reached, have the patience to wait for us."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Flora Levin explores how and why music was so important to the ancient Greeks. She examines the distinctions that they drew between the theory of music as an art ruled by number and the theory wherein number is held to be ruled by the art of music. These perspectives generated more expansive theories, particularly the idea that the cosmos is a mirror-image of music's structural elements and, conversely, that music by virtue of its cosmic elements - time, motion, and the continuum - is itself a mirror-image of the cosmos. These opposing perspectives gave rise to two opposing schools of thought, the Pythagorean and the Aristoxenian. Levin argues that the clash between these two schools could never be reconciled because the inherent conflict arises from two different worlds of mathematics. Her book shows how the Greeks' appreciation of the profundity of music's interconnections with philosophy, mathematics, and logic led to groundbreaking intellectual achievements that no civilization has ever matched.
