Book excerpt: This document presents the Queer Students of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation's (QSAPP) research into housing for LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness in New York City. Based at Columbia GSAPP, QSAPP's interdisciplinary project looks at this issue from the various disciplines of the built environment represented at the school: architecture, real estate, planning, and preservation. The book draws on a range of sources--including data from government and social service organizations, operating models of existing organizations in New York, and interviews with service providers and experts in the field--and perspectives in sociology, public health, and advocacy. Funding is often cited as one of the biggest barriers to solving this housing crisis, but an analysis of funding models and strategies does not currently exist. In addition, housing is a design problem but there are no published reports that analyze LGBTQ youth housing from a spatial perspective. QSAPP hopes that by visualizing this issue and highlighting ways in which these shelters fit into specific planning and real estate systems in the city, we can further shed light on the specific needs of LGBTQ youth and help advise on ways forward with these concerns in mind.

Through interviews the authors gained privileged entry into the lives of youth in Toronto and Halifax over a year-long period. The problem has elicited a variety of societal and public policy responses over the years, concomitant with fluctuations in the economy and changes in the demographics of and attitudes toward poor and disenfranchised citizens. In recent decades, federal agencies, nonprofit organizations, and the philanthropic community have worked hard to develop and implement programs to solve the challenges of homelessness, and progress has been made. However, much more remains to be done. Importantly, the results of various efforts, and especially the efforts to reduce homelessness among veterans in recent years, have shown that the problem of homelessness can be successfully addressed. Although a number of programs have been developed to meet the needs of persons experiencing homelessness, this report focuses on one particular type of intervention: permanent supportive housing (PSH). Permanent Supportive Housing focuses on the impact of PSH on health care outcomes and its cost-effectiveness. The report also addresses policy and program barriers that affect the ability to bring the PSH and other housing models to scale to address housing and health care needs.

Book excerpt: Despite recognition of youth homelessness in the policy environment relatively little is known about the practices effective in assisting young people to avoid or exit homelessness and the voices of homeless young people are often absent or go unheard in policy discussions. Underpinned by a practice-based approach and using a two phase participatory action research framework the study reported in this publication articulates and documents the experience of young people involved in Southern Youth and Family Services (SYFS), a not-for-profit, community-based organisation situated on the south-east coast of Australia. Employing both quantitative and qualitative data gathering methods this study identifies the practices that have the most significant impact and benefits for young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.The aspects nominated by young people as making the most positive difference in their lives include: the relationship with and the care practices of the SYFS staff; practices that assist young people learn to look after themselves and to become independent; developing a sense of belonging and connectedness, a sense of control over their lives and a sense of hope for the future; and access to stable supported accommodation. The aspects encompass indicators of well-being, care and social justice.The bundles of practices, arrangements and relations that make up how care and social justice are enacted at SYFS include: practices of respect, recognition and care; practices of belonging and connectedness; practices of representation, advocacy and listening; and practices of redistribution that ameliorate some of the structural barriers young people face in their pursuit of safe, stable living situations and well-being.The perspectives of young people challenge current policy directions that prioritise rapid, permanent re-housing and short-term support. This study shows that young people who are homeless, at risk of homelessness or disadvantaged benefit most from transitional housing coupled with persistent relationships that provide long-term support. Accordingly, this study, suggests that outcome measures used by funding bodies to assess the performance of funded youth homelessness services, do not give sufficient weight to indicators of social justice, inclusion and wellbeing or to relationships based on care, respect and persistence.

Factors leading to homelessness are explored and examples of the positive influence of an art for children experiencing crisis and trauma are presented. Through action research, an art program was implemented where children worked with ceramics, drawing, and writing, twice a week for three and a half weeks. The participants ranged in age from six to fifteen years, with classes conducted as part of their after-school program. Data collected through observations, interviews, and the students' work was used to adapt the lessons for diverse ages, abilities, and attendance of the participants. Findings showed the students were able to express themselves through their art visually, by making clay projects that reflected their interests, and verbally, by writing or telling what they were thinking or feeling. The students displayed enthusiasm for making art and exhibited a great deal of pride in what they had accomplished. The results showed that students demonstrated characteristics that have been identified to help foster resiliency in individuals. Helping to develop the joy of learning, creativity, and self-worth are important tools for every child's growth; however, the use of art as a pathway to develop such characteristics may be even more critical to a child experiencing trauma. Art lessons can provide a positive impact on the lives of children and youth in the fight to break the cycle of homelessness."--Abstract.
