As there is no cure for the disease, education and prevention programs have become vital in decreasing HIV/AIDS death and infection rates. In 2006 UNAIDS declared that schools held the largest concentration of children, therefore, school-based HIV/AIDS prevention programs were the most efficient and effective method of fighting this epidemic amongst young people. Previous analyses have also shown that in Sub-Saharan Africa, the number of people who will be in need of treatment in future years could be drastically reduced if comprehensive prevention programs were implemented (Salomon, 2005). In most African countries, governments have struggled to effectively implement and sustain HIV/AIDS prevention programs in schools. This has led to many grassroots and nongovernmental organization stepping in with different methods to combat HIV/AIDS. In this research project, I identified problems at the intersection of youth and HIV/AIDS in Sub-Saharan Africa and then analyzed the grassroots NGO Rescue Mission Zambia (RMZ) as a case study. I assessed how the organization is dealing with HIV/AIDS prevention programs among the youth in Zambia. My findings show that RMZ has played a significant role in the current HIV/AIDS education programs among the Zambian youth. However, financial support remains an open question, and in order to sustain the organization, funding will be needed from both local governments and private institutions.

Chapters on street youth in Namibia and youth in a township in Cape Town discuss the often creative coping mechanisms employed by youth to escape or mitigate the oppressive situations they find themselves in.

Book excerpt: One in six adults in sub-Saharan Africa will die in their prime of AIDS. It is a stunning cataclysm, plunging life expectancy to pre-modern levels and orphaning millions of children. Yet political trauma does not grip Africa. People living with AIDS are not rioting in the streets or overthrowing governments. In fact, democratic governance is spreading. Contrary to fearful predictions, the social fabric is not being ripped apart by bands of unsocialized orphan children. AIDS and Power explains why social and political life in Africa goes on in a remarkably normal way, and how political leaders have successfully managed the AIDS epidemic so as to overcome any threats to their power. Partly because of pervasive denial, AIDS is not a political priority for electorates, and therefore not for democratic leaders either. AIDS activists have not directly challenged the political order, instead using international networks to promote a rights-based approach to tackling the epidemic. African political systems have proven resilient in the face of AIDS's stresses, and rulers have learned to co-opt international AIDS efforts to their own political ends. In contrast with these successes, African governments and international agencies have a sorry record of tackling the epidemic itself. AIDS and Power concludes without political incentives for HIV prevention, this failure will persist.

Children as Caregivers examines how well intentioned practitioners fail to realize that children take on active caregiving roles when their guardians become seriously ill and demonstrates why understanding children’s care is crucial for global health policy. Using ethnographic methods, and listening to the voices of the young as well as adults, Jean Hunleth makes the caregiving work of children visible. She shows how children actively seek to “get closer” to ill guardians by providing good care. Both children and ill adults define good care as attentiveness of the young to adults’ physical needs, the ability to carry out treatment and medication programs in the home, and above all, the need to maintain physical closeness and proximity. Children understand that losing their guardians will not only be emotionally devastating, but that such loss is likely to set them adrift in Zambian society, where education and advancement depend on maintaining familial, reciprocal relationships.
