Book excerpt: On my third day in 1992, I saw Laura Dietrichson. It was one thing to read about murders in true crime books. The victim had a life-accounts and photos were merely evidence of that life. But that's all it was. The person was still dead as you read about them. Yet here I was looking at a future murder victim, as real, as alive, and as wholly unaware of the date she would die as I was of my own. Her murder in ten months somehow made her seem even more alive. Professor Cal Sutherland's research on the philosophy of time and time travel elicits only snide remarks from fellow philosophers and rejection notices from journals. Even Cal would admit that time travelers probably aren't real-until he encounters one, Dr. Lionel Bradshaw, inside his neighbor's burning house. Cal accompanies Lionel on a trip back in time to retrieve a rare set of tumblers, and Cal happily lives out what had formerly been a mere thought experiment. But when a 23 year-old murder threatens the secrecy of the time machine in the present day, the only one who can help is the murdered woman herself-still very much alive somewhere in the past. It's up to Cal to track her down and learn all he can about her death, before it happens. Cal soon learns that, while the past cannot be changed-the "First Law" of time travel-there is much a time traveler can do in the past. Unfortunately for Cal, this includes the possibility of dying there...

The world is steeped in gore. Again and again, Counter finds himself reliving his father’s shooting as his trauma is fragmented, recast, and distorted on a compulsive mental Tilt-A-Whirl. Channelling Phoebe Bridgers, George Orwell, and Jordan Peele, these essays look us dead in the eye and ask: What kind of life can we piece together amid all the carnage?

Download or read book Of The Sky written by Lauren Hansen and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-01-14 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waking up in an unknown place should be scary, but for some reason, I felt surprisingly calm... ish... about it. Okay, I may have been mildly panicking, but the point is, I kept my wits about me! When I first arrived, I knew two things: my name is Kalani, and I need to find my brother, Zane. Everything has been a learning experience. I was told, being a Guardian would be hard, yet everyone was vague about the details. They didn't tell me I would have intense, realistic simulations to get through-the type that in the end really messes with your feelings. "Let them die," yeah, like that's easy to swallow. They certainly didn't tell me that one of my classes would be how to fly. Who leaves that out? Seriously, flying is awesome. They really should have led with that. I credit Samuel with making things easier. He's a sweet talker who knows what to say to turn me into a blubbering idiot. The whole "I like him and he likes me" scenario really gets twisted when I learn a huge secret. Do I tell him? Do I keep it to myself? It makes the "let's be honest" thing difficult when what you have to say is life altering. As if that weren't hard enough, Zane decides to slap me with his own dose of the truth. Dude, come on, I'm your twin; you should've known better. I know you're just trying to help right now, but it's just giving me more anxiety. Ugh! On top of it all, it turns out Guardianship is about to be changed forever. Thanks, Alex.
Book Synopsis Freedom Starts Today by : John Elmore
Download or read book Freedom Starts Today written by John Elmore and published by Baker Books. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every church is filled with people who are struggling--often secretly--with addictions of all kinds. Porn, pills, food, money, alcohol, social media, body image, status, sex, anxiety--the list goes on and on. John Elmore is no stranger to addiction. Fifteen years ago, he put a loaded shotgun to his head and later had three doctors tell him he was going to die of alcoholism. More than 15 sober years later, he leads the world's largest weekly recovery gathering, re:generation, where people journey toward healing in Christ. In Freedom Starts Today, he makes a huge promise to the addicted: you can be free from your struggle, and much sooner than you may think. Through easily digestible readings grounded in Scripture and the practice of daily surrender, Elmore shows you how to break the cycle of addiction, make war against sin, and find your identity in who you are and not the shame of what you have done--one day at a time. Leave behind struggles, addiction, and shame as you walk in the power of the Holy Spirit and in the love, mercy, and forgiveness of the God who is not only by your side but on your side. **************************** "Revival is a hard thing to quantify, but it always includes a growing devotion to the Lord and repenting of sin. And that is the fire God will start in you as you live out what you'll read within the pages of this book."--Jennie Allen, New York Times bestselling author of Get Out of Your Head; founder and visionary of IF:Gathering "John has walked the road of recovery and helped countless others do the same. I am thrilled that he has put a resource in our hands that can help all of us!"--Ben Stuart, pastor of Passion City Church DC; author of Single, Dating, Engaged, Married "I've personally witnessed God use John Elmore to set prisoners free by the thousands. The methods in Freedom Starts Today are proven and effective at helping anyone walk in the abundant life that Jesus promises."--Jonathan Pokluda, bestselling author of Welcome to Adulting; host of Becoming Something podcast; pastor of Harris Creek in Waco, TX
