Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Baptized Child It is not the object of this book to promote a sectarian observance of rites and forms. The wall of separation already made by them, between different denominations of Christians, is, in one sense, so high that it is dreadful.' The forms that characterize the various sects of true Christians, and even the differences in their doctrinal belief, may remain to the end1 of time but when the full power of Christianity is known, the manifestation of it will appear in the triumph of Christian love amongst the followers of Christ: andviii preface. Sprinkling, and Immersion, and Infant Baptism, the Right of Ordina tion, and the Liturgy, or Election and Perseverance, will be no greater hindrance to Christians, in their affection for each other and in their union to convert the world, than the different costumes adopted and worn by the different companies in a Fire Department should prevent their co-operation to put out a fire. All these things will be subordinated to the love of Christ, and of one another, because Christians will have learnt the spiritual nature of Christianity and looking upon their own denomination and upon others, the words of Christ Will be felt in their sublime and beautiful truth Woman believe me, the hour cometh when ye shall neither in this moun tain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father. But the hour cometh and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth for the Father seeketh such to worship him. Then the world will feel that greatest proof of the divine origin of Christianity, The union of Christians in spite of the diversity in their forms and creeds. In view of past alienation and strife, that union will appear the greatest instance of the presence and power of God on earth since the days of miracles and therefore, Christ, in prophetic prayer, looked to this consummation as the triumph of his cause That they all may be one that the world may believe that Thou hast sent me. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is this just another book on infant baptism? No. It is possibly the best succinct, yet comprehensive work on the subject ever written by a puritan. It was originally a longer series of sermons that Harrison preached to his congregation, many of whom were Baptist at the time. At their request, he placed his thoughts into a concise treatise that covers all the main points needful in understanding the biblical position of infant inclusion in the Covenant of Grace, and infant baptism. Harrison’s work is so acute in its biblical presentation of the truth of Scripture that the reader cannot be but left in awe of his masterful exactitude to God’s mind on the issue of infant inclusion in the Covenant of Grace, and the application of the sign of the covenant to every visible member in the church. He gives the reader an introductory lesson on the Covenant of Grace and those parties involved by way of its membership, and then proceeds to teach the reader why infants are to be baptized. Harrison deals hermeneutically with 9 biblical arguments on the issue; two of which are his most important foundational chapters setting the stage for the rest of the book. He also shows the danger of shutting infants out of the kingdom of heaven, and answers all the main objections to Antipaedobaptist theology on the issue. He ends the work with a chapter on the right mode in which baptism should take place, along with a chapter on applying the truths of the study to the life of the members of the covenant community. Without sounding clichéd, this work is among the top works ever written on the subject, and in my estimation is irrefutable. The unbiased reader will have no issues with Harrison’s biblical exposition and logic driven inference. It is a powerhouse puritan work that every Paedobaptist ought to read for support, and every Antipaedobaptist ought to read to untangle their dispensational theology. Harrison says that Antipaedobaptism is “to be justly abhorred as false doctrine,” and proves this to the reader beyond a reasonable doubt. This is not a scan or facsimile, has been updated in modern English for easy reading and has an active table of contents for electronic versions.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infant Baptism Another remarkable passage is found in the address of the Apos tle Peter to the multitude assembled on the day of Pentecost, re corded in the 11th chap. Acts, 38, 39. Then Peter said unto them, 'repent and be baptised every one of you, in the name 'of Jesus Christ, for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive 'the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you and. 'to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.' The Apostle does not certainly mean here that promise of extraordinary or miraculous gifts con tained in the quotation he had before made from the prophecy of Joel, and which he says was fulfilled in the miraculous descent of the Holy Ghost on the Apostles and others, by which they Were enabled to speak in languages which they had never learned. For certainly it could not be said that the promise of these extra ordinary gifts was to all the house of Israel and to their children, and to all the Gentiles whom God should call. But it manifestly refers to the promise of the covenant which God made with Abra ham, and which was confirmed to Patriarchs and Prophets, and especially to David, whom the Apostle introduces with peculiar beauty and fitness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Infant Baptism: A Part and Pillar of Popery All the absurdities and abominations with which Romanism is characterized, are but developments of this central dogma; Ofishoots from this one poisonous root. But this also is the very core and substance of infant baptism. If its upholders do not regard it as the merest nullity - a rite as vapid and mean ingless as it is unscriptural - they must ascribe to it some mysterious efiicacy; some hidden and magical power; by which it influences the Spiri tual state of its recipients, and brings them under moral relations different from those of others. Ao cordingly, we find. That wherever it is left to unfold itself freely - wherever it is not shorn of its natural proportions and accompaniments by contact with the advocates Of primitive truth and order, - it al ways appears in connection with baptismal regener ation, infant church-membership, and sacramental holiness. And this is Popery. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sacrament of Responsibility, or Testimony of Scripture to the Teaching of the Church on Holy Baptism: With Special Reference to the Case of Infants, and Answers to Objections The Bishop of Exeter had refused to institute Mr. Gorham to a living because, on examination, he seemed not to hold absolutely the Regeneration of all Infants in Holy Baptism. The Bishop took his stand upon the plain words of the Baptismal Service. If Mr. Gorham administered Baptism to Infants in the words of that Service, he must assert, in the face of God and of the congregation, respecting each particular infant, that as soon as ever he had baptized it, it was regenerate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mercy to Babes: A Plea for the Christian Baptism of Infants, Addressed to Those Who Doubt and Those Who Deny the Validity of That Practice, Upon the Grounds of the Doctrine of Baptism, and the Eternal Sense of Holy Writ Of old there was a dispute as to whether Christ died for all or only for the elect. The doctrines certain persons had taken up, rendered it very necessary for them to assert that Christ had made atonement only for some few. This was a limita tion of the atonement established by the tradition or doctrine of man against the plain words of holy scripture. Men who had more confidence in the word of God than in these so called doctrines. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
