Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the 1960s ended, Herbie Hancock embarked on a grand creative experiment. Having just been dismissed from the celebrated Miles Davis Quintet, he set out on the road, playing with his first touring group as a leader until he eventually formed what would become a revolutionary band. Taking the Swahili name Mwandishi, the group would go on to play some of the most innovative music of the 1970s, fusing an assortment of musical genres, American and African cultures, and acoustic and electronic sounds into groundbreaking experiments that helped shape the American popular music that followed. In You’ll Know When You Get There, Bob Gluck offers the first comprehensive study of this influential group, mapping the musical, technological, political, and cultural changes that they not only lived in but also effected. Beginning with Hancock’s formative years as a sideman in bebop and hard bop ensembles, his work with Miles Davis, and the early recordings under his own name, Gluck uncovers the many ingredients that would come to form the Mwandishi sound. He offers an extensive series of interviews with Hancock and other band members, the producer and engineer who worked with them, and a catalog of well-known musicians who were profoundly influenced by the group. Paying close attention to the Mwandishi band’s repertoire, he analyzes a wide array of recordings—many little known—and examines the group’s instrumentation, their pioneering use of electronics, and their transformation of the studio into a compositional tool. From protofunk rhythms to synthesizers to the reclamation of African identities, Gluck tells the story of a highly peculiar and thrillingly unpredictable band that became a hallmark of American genius.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book of essays. They are about the journey we all take through life. All of us are heading toward a real goal - home. We will each know our own home when we get there. When these essays started coming out of my computer, I did not know they were going to be essays. I was totally astonished when "His Eye Is On The Sparrow" showed up, fully formed, needing only slight tweaking to assume its final shape. I looked it over. This was an essay. It could not be anything else. Carrying on with my writing, I saw essay after essay appear on the screen of my computer. Some came out of my brain and heart almost as fully formed as the first. Some required much work. I believe the work was worthwhile. I believe the book is worthwhile. I stand proudly behind every idea in this book. I do not stand behind every word. Every major idea here is transformational and liberating. I do not know how many major liberating transformational ideas there are in the world, but as I write this, I can think of maybe 20 or 30 - no more. On the other hand, there are more than a half a million words in the three books. You may find words with which you disagree. I hope you do. But it would be a step in the wrong direction for you to disagree with the ideas. If you are completely satisfied with your current ideas about life - if you know all you want to know about leading a joy-filled life full of spirituality but devoid of empty religiosity - if you are happy with your relationships with all the people who mean something to you - if you have not thought about these things in many years, and really don't care to think about them now. If all this is true for you, please close this book and stop reading immediately. The Way Home is really three books in one cover. Each of the three is a complete unit, but each book gains strength from the other two. There are forty one essays in The Way Home, and each essay is complete in itself, but is also part of a unified whole. Book One provides an overview for the special person who will want to read a serious book of essays about how to lead life. Book Two is for those who might want to know more about the author and how he became the person he is. Book Three is for those who understand the first two. These fortunate few will already be conscious citizens of the new world already emerging from the ashes of the complete failure of western civilization. They know where they are going and how to get there. They will have gained a sense of direction for everything they do, and they will know how to regain balanced movement if they are ever threatened. Most of them will be able to do this because of a new religion they have adopted. It may be called by the same name as the religion they have always had, but it will be a new and intensely personal view of that religion. This personal religion will use some of the language of the religion into which the person was born - that is, Christians may use mostly the words of Jesus, Jews will not use Jesus' words at all, the different sects of the Moslem world will find different sections of the Koran to emphasize, and Indians will quote the Upanishads. Remarkably, there will be no disagreement, although each religion will be unique to one person alone.

The mind does not let you see inside of it, in fact always throwing you out into the sensory, everyday life around you. So how do we turn inward and lift the veil on the mind? How does the mind reveal itself to usif at all? The Mysterion Dynasty uncovers a truth about the mind that has long been concealedthat the mind will tell you what it does if you ask it and then carefully listen when it finally tells you. A result of a thirty-eight year game to discover how our minds actually work, The Mysterion Dynasty chronicles one mans exploration of the many parts and mechanisms of our revealed minds. With continual hard work, author Roger Wells was uniquely enabled to not only discover how the mind worksbut also uncover its faults and how these faults lead to destruction and cruelty. Looking inside the mind is only the first step to understanding how it works. Beginning with this understanding, The Mysterion Dynasty will show us how our conscious minds operate in the world and receive and transmit images and other sensory data. Yet even more, learning about the fault in the mind of humankind will offer us the greatest hope and a plan to bring our world into a much better place than it has ever been beforefor without knowledge of the fault, all is lost and hopeless.

For seventy years, from Valley of Decision (1933) to The Bells of Saint Babel's (2001), Curnow's poetry was always on the move – from his early approaches to New Zealand identity and myth to later work concerned with the philosophical encounter between word and world. Curnow also played a major role in New Zealand life as editor, critic, commentator and anthologist, as well as a much-loved writer of light verse under the penname of Whim Wham. In his later years he acquired an impressive international reputation, winning the Commonwealth Prize for Poetry and the Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry. Throughout his lifetime, Allen Curnow revised, selected and collected his poetry in various ways. For the first time, this collection brings together all of the poems that Curnow collected in his lifetime grouped in their original volumes. The notes reproduce Curnow's comments on individual poems and include relevant editorial guidance. This is the definitive collection of work by New Zealand's most distinguished poet.
