Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Augustine’s Confessions is probably the most commented upon text of early Christianity. Yet, there is a general consensus that this justly famous work is neither well composed nor structurally unified. “You Made Us for Yourself” aims to challenge this common notion by approaching the Confessions in light of what Augustine himself would have considered most fundamental: creation, understood in a broad sense. Creation, for Augustine, is an epiphany, a light that reveals who God is and who human beings are. It is not merely one doctrine or theme among others, but is the foundational context which illumines all doctrines and all themes. Moreover, creation, for Augustine, is dynamically ordered toward the church, toward the deified destiny the body of Christ both is and brings about. Thus, the Confessions itself can be understood as Augustine’s prayer of praise in thanksgiving for the unmerited gift of creation (and re-creation). It is his self-gift back to God—a kind of eucharistic offering intended to take up and bring about the same in his readers. Augustine’s rich understanding of creation, then, can account for the often despaired of meaning, structure, and unity of the Confessions.

Book excerpt: Though the Nicene Creed is regularly recited in weekly church services, few understand its historical origins and connections to Scripture and key Christian doctrines. This volume bridges the gap, providing an accessible introduction that explains how the Creed is anchored in the Bible and how it came to be written and confessed in the early history of the church. The authors show how the Creed reflects the purpose of God in salvation, especially in relation to Christians' divine adoption as sons and daughters, leading to glorification. Each chapter includes sidebars highlighting how the Creed has been received in the church's liturgy. Professors, students, clergy, and religious educators will benefit from this illuminating and edifying guide to the Nicene Creed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At age seventeen Joe Pepitone signed with the New York Yankees, and soon experts were predicting that he would be the team’s next superstar. He could run, throw, and field, and he had a sweet home run swing. But during his twelve years in the major leagues Pepitone devoted most of his energy to swinging off the field. He blew his career, destroyed two marriages, lost custody of three children, and came very close to a nervous breakdown. At the age of thirty-three he quit baseball for good and finally admitted that for most of his life, he’d been living a lie. He’d been acting the carefree clown in order to cover up immense inner pain. In Joe, You Coulda Made Us Proud, first published in 1975, Pepitone reveals what was behind his wild behavior. He does so in the most devastatingly honest terms, holding back none of the embarrassment, anguish, and guilt that perpetually haunted him. He tells of the father he loved so much, “Willie Pep” Pepitone, the toughest man in a tough Brooklyn neighborhood. Obsessed with making Joe a baseball star, Willie beat his son when he failed to meet expectations. One night, enraged at his father, Joe said, “Mom—I wish he’d die!” Willie died the next day. Along with pain, the book has plenty of humor. Pepitone tells of partying with Frank Sinatra and Mickey Mantle, carousing with groupies and hookers, and “living the life” of a famous ballplayer in the sixties and seventies. One of the most moving, honest, and hilarious books ever written by an athlete, Joe, You Coulda Made Us Proud was selected by Esquire magazine as one of the “20 best baseball books ever.” Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Sports Publishing imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in sports—books about baseball, pro football, college football, pro and college basketball, hockey, or soccer, we have a book about your sport or your team. Book excerpt: Drawing from Jesus words to the disciples to become like children, Marilyn McCord Adams presents more than two hundred fifty original prayers that serve as powerful and practical examples of how adults can pray in a manner that combines the complexity and richness of their adult experiences with the candor, immediacy, demands, and expectations of a child. The prayers in this collection encourage us to move to a deeper level of intimacy and openness to God, which McCord Adams believes will compel us to bring the pressing problems facing us directly to God. This resource, which can be used by those who lead public worship as well as those who seek to grow closer to God in private, includes prayers that address social and personal concerns such as peace, justice, care of the environment, and responding to Gods call.

Book excerpt: When was the last time you compared yourself to someone else? A couple of days ago? More likely it was just hours ago, perhaps only minutes Most of us struggle for affirmation of our personal significance by playing the comparison game. How do we measure up to others, what they have or what they've achieved? What is our status when compared to the expectations of others? How do we measure up to our own often unrealistic expectations of ourselves? A healthy competitive spirit can quickly degenerate into addictive, self-destructive playing of the comparison game, a game that we inevitably lose The Comparison Game (How to Disqualify Yourself from Playing), honestly addresses my own struggle with an unhealthy comparison of myself to others and the unreasonable expectations I sometimes place upon myself. The book invites the reader on a personal journey of self-discovery that can result in overcoming the addictive attitudes, thoughts, and actions that keep us playing the comparison game.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of us take our moral bearings from a conception of the good, or a range of goods, that we consider most important. We are in this sense selves in moral space. Building on the work of the philosopher Charles Taylor, among others, David Parker examines a range of classic and contemporary autobiographies—including those of St. Augustine, William Wordsworth, Friedrich Nietzsche, Edmund Gosse, Roland Barthes, Seamus Heaney, and J. M. Coetzee—to reveal a whole domain of life narrative that has been previously ignored, one that enables a new approach to the question of what constitutes a "good" life narrative. Moving from an ethics toward an aesthetics of life writing, Parker follows Wittgenstein's view that ethics and aesthetics are one. The Self in Moral Space is distinctive in that its key ethical question is not What is it right for the life writer to do? but the broader question What is it good to be? This question opens up an important debate with the dominant postmodern paradigms that prevail in life writing studies today. In Parker's estimation, such paradigms are incapable of explaining why life writing matters in the contemporary context. Life narrative, he argues, faces readers with the perennial ethical question How should a human being live? We need a new reconstructive paradigm, as offered by this book, in order to gain a fuller understanding of life narrative and its humanistic potential.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is evil really? Where does it come from? And if God is really God, why doesn't he do more about it? This world is out of control-so violent, painful, unfair and destructive. Doesn't God care? The Greek philosopher Epicurus is credited with saying: Either God wants to abolish evil and cannot; or he can but does not want to; or he cannot and does not want to. If he wants to but cannot, he is impotent. If he can and does not want to, he is wicked. But if God both can and wants to abolish evil, then how comes evil in the world? This is known as the Epicurean paradox. Obviously, mankind has been wrestling with the problem of evil for some time; Epicurus lived between 340-270 BC. Fast-forward twenty-three hundred years. Eric Jennings is a freshman at the University of Florida. He and his older sister, Libby, have moved in from the mission field to enter the premed program to become medical missionaries. Eric's roommate, Todd Rehnquist, though a baseball teammate and a good friend, is an atheist. And he poses the "problem" to Eric using an interesting quote. This sets in motion a conversation between Eric, Todd, Libby, Ray Cohen, the Jennings' former science teacher, and Mike Murphy, a local youth minister and one of Eric's spiritual mentors. The conversation happens at an area breakfast haunt, the Gator Skillet. Follow them as they wrestle with this most profound of issues and connect the dots. You'll find that the answers are as simple as they are surprising.

Book excerpt: SPIRITUAL CONFERENCES of Johann Tauler, O.P. is one of the great classics of the Catholic Church. And like the writings of so many other profound and saintly minds, Tauler s works are both easy to read and rich with meaning. They do not dwell on subjects pertinent to only the few, but come to grips with the essential problems we all face in our struggle with the world, the flesh and the devil. If we would attain perfection ( Our Lord enjoined us, Be you therefore perfect, as also your heavenly Father is perfect. Mt.5:48 ), we must do battle with ourselves and with the subtle, little complacencies and pitfalls we are often content to live with. To this end, Johann Tauler is unparalleled in his ability to bare for our scrutiny all the devious tricks of the human heart in its effort to avoid chastising itself and really settling down to the work of spiritual perfection. Tauler influenced Ven. Louis of Granada, St. John of the Cross, St. Teresa of Avila, and many other saints with these seemingly humble sermons. Though brief and easily understood, they will exert a like influence on the Catholic saints of today. Excellent introduction. Impr.
