Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike thousands of other Americans who never leave their neighborhoods until high school, by the time Marilyn Sutton Loos was four years old, she had lived in Palestine, England, and America, and twice crossed the Atlantic and Mediterranean by boat. By the time she was fourteen, she had been evacuated once, lived in the Middle East unscathed through World War II, and added to the list of countries she had lived in or visited: Trans-Jordan, Cyprus, and Lebanon, with short times in Syria. She had become acquainted with Anglicans, Quakers, Presbyterians, Congregationalists, Catholics, Greek Orthodox, Seventh Day Adventists, and Plymouth Brethren, as well as Muslims, Druze and Jews of various denominations. She had learned to speak English, French, and simple Arabic, and occasionally used words of Turkish, and Armenian. Embroidery-whether tangible or figurative-was a leitmotif of the family's life. This is her attempt to write, from memory (unembroidered), about that life as they lived, taught, learned, traveled, and vacationed during the late 1930s and World War II. At the time, all these experiences seemed perfectly normal to her, but the many adjustments to American living showed how unusual they were to Americans. From 1946 to 1953 the family's lives became more similar to other American lives, but often seemed quite unusual to her.

Book excerpt: An eye-opening account of the Rwandan civil war and an achingly tender portrait of a family at odds. Embedded in real events, the novel takes us on an unforgettable journey through the Congo, Germany, and Brooklyn as it examines one family’s passage through genocide and grief. Jacob Furman has always chosen his call to duty over his wife, Susanna, and their son, Shalom. When he’s deployed to the Congo as a Mossad operative to help the Tutsis in their fight against the Hutus, Susanna and Shalom are left once again to contemplate his absence. Susanna, a Holocaust survivor and an esteemed linguistics scholar, buries herself in work as she searches for the biological roots of human language, while Shalom, overwhelmed by the accomplishments of his parents, struggles in search of his identity. After years apart, a fragile reunion borne out of illness sparks a sense of family they never had before, connecting the three to a web of emotion not just to one another, but to the political events that have defined our century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Book Review Editors’ Choice Responsibility—which once meant the moral duty to help and support others—has come to be equated with an obligation to be self-sufficient. This has guided recent reforms of the welfare state, making key entitlements conditional on good behavior. Drawing on political theory and moral philosophy, Yascha Mounk shows why this re-imagining of personal responsibility is pernicious—and suggests how it might be overcome. “This important book prompts us to reconsider the role of luck and choice in debates about welfare, and to rethink our mutual responsibilities as citizens.” —Michael J. Sandel, author of Justice “A smart and engaging book... Do we so value holding people accountable that we are willing to jeopardize our own welfare for a proper comeuppance?” —New York Times Book Review “An important new book... [Mounk] mounts a compelling case that political rhetoric...has shifted over the last half century toward a markedly punitive vision of social welfare.” —Los Angeles Review of Books “A terrific book. The insight at its heart—that the conception of responsibility now at work in much public rhetoric and policy is both punitive and ill-conceived—is very important and should be widely heeded.” —Jedediah Purdy, author of After Nature: A Politics for the Anthropocene

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised and updated edition of the classic astrology text on predicting and navigating life crises • Provides charts for the transits of Saturn, Uranus, and Chiron--now updated through 2050--to predict your personal growth cycles and timing of kundalini rising • Shares tools to cope with the intensity of spiritual emergency and direct the kundalini energy released during planetary passages • Includes a new preface by the author reflecting on 20 years of success stories since the book’s initial publication • No astrological chart needed to use this book In this updated edition of Liquid Light of Sex, renowned astrologer and spiritual teacher Barbara Hand Clow explores the connection between life crises in your 30s, 40s, and 50s and the key astrological passages of Saturn, Uranus, and Chiron in your birth chart. She explains how kundalini energy--the “liquid light of sex” that lies at the base of the spine--is activated during these planetary transits, rising through the chakras and triggering the process of spiritual emergency, and in many cases, a cascade of health, emotional, and relationship problems as well as extreme anxiety. She shows that by understanding these astrological transits, you can be prepared for turbulent periods and successfully navigate them by creatively channeling the spiritual fire of kundalini. Clow provides astrological charts--now updated through 2050 for those born between 1930 and 2000--detailing the cycles of Saturn, Uranus, and Chiron, so you do not need your birth chart to use this book. She explains how to use the charts to predict the onset and completion of each kundalini activation and corresponding crisis. She shares tools for individuals and therapists to cope with the intensity of spiritual emergency and too much fire energy, unblock the chakras, and integrate the power of kundalini for physical, emotional, and spiritual growth. Reflecting on 20 years of success stories since the book’s initial publication, Clow presents a road map for using celestial cycles to navigate positively and productively in times of great life change.

Know ye that the Lord He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture, (Psalm 100:3). He is the only one who knows the secret plan for His investment. Without God, there is no future investment, (Jeremiah 29:11). Even the Gospel is an investment. It provides us with restoration and is preparing men and women of God to walk in ministry. The Gospel is also known as the Good News that brings hope and provides healing for the soul. Remember, the investor is God, and we are His investment. Gods investment of the Gospel authenticates His power over the earth and mankind. Each investment God gives unto us is filled with miracles that demonstrate a heavenly illustration with an earthly manifestation. Gods investment here confirms His great power over the earth and mankind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nationally known astrologer explores the connection between spiritual emergencies at age 30, 40, and 50 and key astrological passages of Saturn, Uranus, and Chiron. • Provides techniques for directing the kundalini energy released during planetary passages for optimal personal and psychic development. • Includes charts for birth years starting in 1930 so that readers can determine the timing of their planetary passages. • By Barbara Hand Clow, author of the bestselling Pleiadian Agenda (60,000 copies sold). Kundalini--the energy of eros that lies at the base of the spine--can be overwhelming once activated. Times of activation coincide with the key astrological passages of Saturn, Uranus, and Chiron in one's birth chart and are often experienced as periods of spiritual emergency, confusion, and imbalance. In Liquid Light of Sex, Barbara Hand Clow opens up new dimensions for understanding what occurs during these key life passages, which most of us experience three times in our lives. In the author's words, "we form at age 30, we transform at age 40, and we transmute at age 50." Focusing on the transformation at age 40--the time of imbalance and spiritual confusion often referred to as the "midlife crisis"--she explores how kundalini energy, the liquid light of sex, can be creatively channeled by unblocking the chakras. Offering effective methods for achieving physical, emotional, and spiritual growth during this important life passage, Liquid Light of Sex presents a roadmap for using celestial cycles to navigate positively and productively in times of great life change.

Book excerpt: Born into the flaming trenches of a true spiritual hell, Lacey Hart spends her impoverished childhood lost in the strange shadow world between heaven and the demonic underworld in her senses. She uses religion to mold herself into The Perfect Daughter so that she might evade her disturbed mother's malevolence. Lacey is a demure child whose primrose sweetness and white-laced stoicism hearken back to the puritanical era- times when bewitchment infiltrated even the purest breath of beauty. In school she is an idiot savant, and she believes herself to be haunted by the devil. But outside the physical, emotional, and sexual torture chamber of her home, Lacey rarely ruffles feathers. Then she turns eighteen. Her sexuality, which she has always felt had its roots in evil, blooms like an overripe fruit from the center of her soul. Around the same time, Lacey and her best friend Sabrina uncover the gift that has both defined and isolated them all their lives: intuition. Emerging from the coccoon of their silence into awareness, the two friends find themselves also immersed in the dark side of magic. It is on this spiritual cusp between heaven and hell that they experience the heights of ecstasy- but drift inevitably toward the dredges of humanity on the outskirts of life. Like twinned flames, Lacey and Sabrina embark upon the bohemian "magical mystery tour" of their twenties with the quixotic candor and unexpected bravery of the truly eccentric. Then grave illness strikes, unplanned pregnancy arises, and they learn the power of true love to bloom one's spirit into the oneness with all things that is true freedom. The story of two women who dare to submerge themselves completely into any given moment, Lily Whites of Steel is a fearless exploration of the thin line between freedom and destruction, dogma and authentic mysticism, and- perhaps most hauntingly of all- truth and madness.
