Book excerpt: Andrea knows what it's like to be pretty. Thanks to her gorgeous, drug-addicted mother, she also knows where pretty can lead... At 16, Andrea is yanked from the safety of her Gram's home and dropped into the backwoods of Ohio, where she's coerced into working for her mother's drug-dealing boyfriend, Judd. Unwilling to give up on her college dreams, Andrea spends her days trying to stay on the honor roll, and her nights packaging and delivering drugs. Judd is violent and manipulative, and Andrea often goes to bed with an empty stomach and a hardening heart. The one bright spot in Andrea's life is a budding friendship with a charismatic girl named Chloe and her handsome cousin, Brick. These stolen moments of teenage normalcy make Andrea yearn for a way out, but fear and a sense of responsibility to her mother pull her back in. When things with Judd take a darker turn than she can bear, Andrea devises a plan to save herself. But freedom may cost her everything—and everyone—she cares about... Gritty, heartfelt, and suspenseful, All Out of Pretty explores the complexities of self-preservation and addiction as well as the pain, and beauty, of letting go. It will appeal to fans of Sara Zarr and Sarah Dessen.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the true story of eight children who started off in a normal family but had an abusive father. Eventually, constant marital fights and the father’s aggressiveness led to divorce, leaving the children to figure out how to survive on their own, with only a mother suffering from mental health issues left to look out for them. Over a five-year period each child experienced profound neglect, lack of supervision, and the breakdown of the family unit, forcing them to make choices they never would have made otherwise. But by the grace of God, and through the help of ordinary people along the way, they not only survived but developed a relationship with Christ. He transformed their lives and helped them achieve above and beyond anything they could have imagined. God has a plan for each of us, but it’s up to us to choose the right path and seek Him in the midst of our trials.

Book excerpt: These four fictional monologues look at different approaches to defining what makes a Mason. ""Brother Harry Truman"", the only potential dual character piece, looks at the timelessness of Masonry from the point of view of the former U.S. President. ""White Gloves"" compares the meaning of Lodge gloves to the gloves of the speaker's alcoholic fisherman father. ""Outside The Door"" is about how Masonry motivates one to step out of themselves to do difficult things. ""Inside The Heart"" looks at how a group of soldiers kept Masonry alive while stationed abroad. They can be performed for the public, but are also a perfect length for lodge meetings. Playwright Aaron Joy is a music writer who has been involved in Masonry in his home of Portland, Maine. His theater work spans on and off stage in the U.S. and Japan, including directing Off-Broadway and tech at San Francisco's Jon Sims Center. While his music work includes owning his own label, Roman Midnight Music, and extensive blogging and podcasting and playing.

Wyatt doesn’t appreciate the misunderstanding or any of my attempts to be his friend. The few times he lets his guard down, he’s kind and fun, but he may as well be holding a permanent sign that says, ‘Keep Away’. Once I do get close to Wyatt, I never want to let him go, but I’m not used to staying in one place, and he’s afraid of having his heart broken. Is a relationship between us doomed from the start? The author has an instinctive ability as a story-teller for children, and has entered into the childs point of view very well. He has infused a huge amount of drama and charm into this simple story. The author clearly has a sense of humour, which comes out in his characterisation. Of all the inanimate objects, a brick is probably the hardest to make appealing and characterful. However, he has managed it to beautiful effect.

When we separated and Jim came into my life, I thought my love for him will always be different than it was for you, and I imagined you feeling the same way about Gena. It's different, yes, but not as bad as I thought it'll be, and that hurts me. You know what I mean? And it's not even like one of us died. We've moved on so easily, Jake. How?" Jake looks at her tenderly. Jake and Jill we used to call each other. If Jake was to tumble, Jill would tumble after is what we had agreed on. "What happened to that love, Jake?" In the sad, heartbreaking title story, an old couple relive their beautiful moments, while they await the inevitable. In other tales, a mother does the unthinkable to feed her starving children; a father's blind love for his son causes nothing but anguish to him; an old man in desperate need of answers seeks counsel of a young boy; a child yearns for the love of her parents; a village landlord throws a feast to save his life; two couples struggle to understand love; a woman likes the idea of marriage, but is afraid of men. What Happened to That Love is a short story collection comprising 12 stories set in India and Australia that explore life, death, love, ache, greed, hope, destiny, alienation, fallacies, and the nature of rural and urban life, and the changes that come to us all.

Book excerpt: Humility Edgar Lungu has been known for many things but humility for a man of influence in a country where people often get over-consumed by their own self-importance sets him several paces apart from other politicians or national leaders. Observers have sometimes described his humility as his most admirable quality and, to many people - especially the common folk who make up the largest part of Zambias population - his most endearing attribute. Tenacity If there was one word to describe Edgar Lungu as a late-blooming politician facing a vicious power struggle to replace Zambias fifth President Michael Sata, tenacious would be that word. He needed bags of it, first, to survive the bitterly fought internal war to win the Patriotic Fronts nomination to stand as its candidate in the 2015 Presidential election occasioned by Satas death and, later, to fend off arch-rival Hakainde Hichilema of the opposition UPND in another closely contested Presidential poll. Politician Politicians make their names for any number of reasons or actions. Some for their ruthlessness, others for their brashness, cunning or indeed kindness. Edgar Lungu seems to have crafted a name for himself simply by cleverly playing the role of the political tyro who knew little about the game...the green horn the opposition made the fatal mistake of underrating. Peace-loving It is hard to imagine any other Zambian politician would so willingly have yielded to another the instruments of power left with them in accordance with the law by a sitting president, as Michael Sata did when he left Edgar Lungu to serve in his place the night he left for the UK to seek medical help in 2014. When Sata died in hospital, there were many 'expert' voices advising Lungu to keep hold onto the instruments of power, rather than decline to the incumbent Vice-President Guy Scott. Lungu happily handed over the instruments to a man who would then go on to do almost all in his powers to hinder his ambition to win the subsequent Presidential election. This is because he sought peace. I want to be remembered as an ordinary person who became President, a person who brought ordinary and human characteristics to the office of the Presidency Edgar Chagwa Lungu, Hot FM radio interview October 2015. By Anthony Mukwita.
