Download or read book Status Anxiety written by Alain De Botton and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2008-12-10 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “There's no writer alive like de Botton” (Chicago Tribune), and now this internationally heralded author turns his attention to the insatiable human quest for status—a quest that has less to do with material comfort than love. Anyone who’s ever lost sleep over an unreturned phone call or the neighbor’s Lexus had better read Alain de Botton’s irresistibly clear-headed new book, immediately. For in its pages, a master explicator of our civilization and its discontents explores the notion that our pursuit of status is actually a pursuit of love, ranging through Western history and thought from St. Augustine to Andrew Carnegie and Machiavelli to Anthony Robbins. Whether it’s assessing the class-consciousness of Christianity or the convulsions of consumer capitalism, dueling or home-furnishing, Status Anxiety is infallibly entertaining. And when it examines the virtues of informed misanthropy, art appreciation, or walking a lobster on a leash, it is not only wise but helpful.
Book Synopsis You're Not Special by : Meghan Rienks
Download or read book You're Not Special written by Meghan Rienks and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her first ever (sort of) memoir, YouTube sensation Meghan Rienks gets personal about everything from drunken debaucheries to mental health. As an only child, Meghan has always been pretty good at entertaining herself. Then one day--cue the dramatic voice-over--her life changed forever. On June 12, 2010, Meghan was diagnosed with mononucleosis. Mono is basically just a really bad case of the flu, right? Wrong. To a party-crazed sixteen-year-old, mono is nothing less than social suicide. So Meghan opened up her 2009 MacBook and recorded her first YouTube video. Since then, she has shared the ups and downs of her life on the internet, documenting her coming-of-age for the whole world to see. Not that she's (mostly) through her awkward stage, Meghan's her to tell you that it gets better. Sometimes a bad hair day feels worse than a punch in the gut and asking a boy out seems as difficult as achieving that perfect dewy glow. But despite what you've been told, your problems are not unique, and somebody out there has felt the same way you feel right at this very moment. You're not special. But on the bumpy road to adulthood, you're also not alone.

Book excerpt: The grace of God is often referred to as unmerited favor. In fact, the very meaning of grace is favor. In this extraordinary book written at a time when people need God's favor more than ever, Jerry Savelle shows how the favor of God is not only available to the believer, but also promised. Drawing from his own experience and his deep knowledge of the Scriptures, Dr. Savelle explains how to actively walk and grow in divine favor, and by doing so enjoy the practical as well as the supernatural benefits for such a time as this, when many are living in fear and uncertainty. The Favor of God will not just inspire readers. By God's grace and favor, it will empower them.
Book Synopsis I Am Someone Special by : Belinda Hernandez
Download or read book I Am Someone Special written by Belinda Hernandez and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-03-12 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the book I Am Someone Special, the author shares the story of her dysfunctional childhoodher journey through the road of drug addiction and drug dealing and how she struggled to leave her dark past behind and move on to a new and better life. Ms. Hernandez did not experience the kind of childhood others enjoy by being adopted into a wealthy, well-off family. She failed to receive the affection she wanted from her parents, particularly from her adoptive mother. The author was the youngest among seven children and the one who received the worst treatment from her alcoholic mother, who was also addicted to drugs. Her birthmother had stabbed her in the head when she was a nine-month-old baby. After an incident that almost robbed the author of her life, she was placed into an orphanage, where her adoptive parents rescued her. The authors adoptive family gave her the love she had long wanted, along with everything she and her adopted brother and sister could ask for. But despite it all, Ms. Hernandez became rebellious, especially as a teenager. Her rebellious teenage years eventually led her to the wrong path as she started using drugs and selling it as well. She worked further into the drug business until she got caught and sentenced for a couple years in prison. After serving her sentence, the author strived to live a clean life and start anew. With the help of her faith in God and the support of the man she loves, she managed to reinvent herself into a better and strong person. I Am Someone Special might appeal to a reader interested in stories that have changed the lives of individuals who recovered from drug addiction and made the decision to rebuild their lives away from drugs. If you would like to get ahold of the author for questions or for advice, contact her through [email protected]. You can buy my books at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Books-A-Million.
