Book excerpt: Albert Hubbard (1841-1899) was born in Steuben County, New York, the son of Chaucey P. and Mary Wells Hubbard. He married Emma Spencer (1851-1943), daughter of Judge George Tiley Spencer of Corning, New York, in 1873 at Corning. After their marriage, they traveled to Turkey, to become missionaries for the Presbyterian Church at Sivas. They had eight children, 1873-1890. The account of the family is chiefly presented in letters written by the Hubbards. The letters contain much interesting information on aspects of life in the Ottoman Empire in the 1870s to 1890s--the rigors of travel, diseases, foods, officials and peoples, especially the Armenians of Sivas and environs, including the massacre of 1895. The older children had returned to the United States for school at the time of their father's death at Sivas. Emma Hubbard remained at Sivas as a missionary until 1902, when she returned to the United States. She died at White Plains, New York, at age 92.
