Book excerpt: This special edition book on Yoshitomo Nara, one of the most prominent contemporary artists working today, shows the complexity of his work over the past three decades. Thirty years after Yoshitomo Nara rocketed to fame with his Neo-Pop paintings of sinister childlike figures, the artist has deepened his practice. Along with his most recognizable pieces, such as his ceramic figurines and ubiquitous portraits of wide-eyed children, readers will discover his less-known aspects of his works including outdoor sculpture, illustrations on paper, and early versions of his figures. Nara's work is influenced by a passion for punk and rock music, popular culture, manga, and growing up in post-World War II Japan. This special edition book includes a slipcase with 13 booklets featuring the full range of Nara's work. It also includes an LP vinyl record with songs selected by the artist on side A and original music and covers by Yo La Tengo, the American indie rock band, on side B. Published with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art

Book excerpt: Shallow Puddles brims with full-color, detailed images of Yoshitomo Nara's (born 1959) titular series. These paintings are executed on shallow circular dishes, covered with small square patches of canvas, and seemingly create portals to a world inundated with water. Depicted on each is a solitary figure that, like those in many of the artist's iconic paintings, holds the viewer's gaze with its large, full eyes, some even with averted eyes. Ground and figure are the main components of each work, yet the artist's painterly execution calls attention to his manipulation of color, form and composition to create an image that transcends traditional portraiture. Included is an essay by Shigemi Takahashi, curator at Aomori Museum of Art, who has worked closely with the artist on numerous projects.

Book excerpt: Artist Yoshitomo Nara's work has received unprecendented international recognition in recent years and has been presented in many publications, yet none have offered such an intimate portrait of the artist and his process. Photographer Mie Morimoto worked with Nara for six months to document the developinf nuance and texture of his art, including his signature "enfant terribles" paintings and weeping dog sculptures. The book includes never before published excerpts from Nara's Journals and revelatory photographs documenting the body of work included in the travelling exhibition "I Don't Mind If You Forget Me".

Book excerpt: Yoshitomo Nara: Drawings focuses on the internationally acclaimed Japanese artist's prolific drawing output of the past 30 years. Rendered in colored pencil and acrylic, Nara's drawings are executed on a variety of paper types, such as found envelopes, stationery and inexpensive lined sheets, and deftly fuse Japanese visual traditions such as manga and anime with Western modernism and elements of American pop culture. The artist's ever-increasing cast of childlike, vulnerable but sinister characters has won him a devoted following around the world. With an abundance of color plates, Yoshitomo Nara: Drawings includes reproductions of early works never publicly exhibited and omitted from the artist's catalogue raisonné, as well as an essay by Masue Kato. The volume is published in conjunction with a large-scale exhibition of Nara's paintings, drawings and sculptures at Blum & Poe, Los Angeles, in Spring 2014. Yoshitomo Nara was born in 1959, in Aomori, Japan. He is one of the leading artists of Japan's Neo Pop movement. His drawings and paintings are informed by a range of influences, from manga and anime to punk rock. He has also worked in sculpture, ceramic and large-scale installation. In the fall of 2010, the Asia Society in New York presented the first major New York exhibition of his work.

Book excerpt: Easily one of the most important Japanese artists of the recent past, Yoshitomo Nara (born 1959) has rocketed to worldwide fame for his darkly whimsical figures that put a creepy twist on childhood ingenuousness. For his 2009 exhibition at the Reykjavik Art Museum, Nara presented his works within the wooden shipping crates in which they had been transported to the museum. Pictures were hung on the outside of the crates, and figures lurked within their interior nooks. This beautifully produced board book records and continues the show's themes of containment and transportation: it features windows that can be opened to reveal the youthful figures ensconced within their confinements, waiting to be freed by the participation of the reader. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At first sight, it appears brand new, pure Tokyo pop. But The Japanese Experience: Inevitable reveals far more than the successful cloning of morphed manga motifs onto stretched canvas and museum walls. It represents eight positions in contemporary Japanese art and scrutinizes their complex visual vocabulary, noting references to Japanese and Western art traditions as frequently as the borrowing of mass culture motifs from the realms of manga and anime. Takashi Murakami's MR. DOB questions the place of contemporary art in our global society; Aya Takano's glowing watercolors combine Japanese sensitivity, issues of female identity, and sci-fi; Masahiko Kuwahara's mutant animals provide shades of softness and mysterious openness, and Yoshitomo Nara's reworking of historical Japanese woodcuts disturbs the floating world. Not only are the artists' visual repertoires new and surprising, but their creative methods and strategies help conquer a public that is mostly untouched by contemporary art. Published in association with the Ursula Blickle Foundation.

Book excerpt: How global contemporary art reanimates the past as a resource for the present, combating modern art's legacy of Eurocentrism. If European modernism was premised on the new—on surpassing the past, often by assigning it to the “traditional” societies of the Global South—global contemporary art reanimates the past as a resource for the present. In this account of what globalization means for contemporary art, David Joselit argues that the creative use of tradition by artists from around the world serves as a means of combatting modern art's legacy of Eurocentrism. Modernism claimed to live in the future and relegated the rest of the world to the past. Global contemporary art shatters this myth by reactivating various forms of heritage—from literati ink painting in China to Aboriginal painting in Australia—in order to propose new and different futures. Joselit analyzes not only how heritage becomes contemporary through the practice of individual artists but also how a cultural infrastructure of museums, biennials, and art fairs worldwide has emerged as a means of generating economic value, attracting capital and tourist dollars. Joselit traces three distinct forms of modernism that developed outside the West, in opposition to Euro-American modernism: postcolonial, socialist realism, and the underground. He argues that these modern genealogies are synchronized with one another and with Western modernism to produce global contemporary art. Joselit discusses curation and what he terms “the curatorial episteme,” which, through its acts of framing or curating, can become a means of recalibrating hierarchies of knowledge—and can contribute to the dual projects of decolonization and deimperialization.
