Book Synopsis Railways of the West Riding of Yorkshire by : Bernard Warr
Download or read book Railways of the West Riding of Yorkshire written by Bernard Warr and published by The Crowood Press. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The West Riding of Yorkshire boasted the most complex railway network in Britain, comprised at various times of seven railway companies, with an eighth trying to secure a foothold, eleven significant joint lines and several minor systems. With no overall strategic pattern of territory or route, the companies seemed to vie incessantly for supremacy, often at the expense of efficiency with the significant duplication of facilities: over twenty-five towns and villages had two passenger stations, while some even had three or four! This book reviews the local history, including its economy and key industries. It describes the need for the railways and the political and geographical challenges they faced. It discusses the impact on the region of 'railway mania' experienced throughout Britain in the mid-nineteenth century. The many locomotives that worked these lines are celebrated, with a behind-the-scenes look at their yards, sheds and roundhouses. The lost branch lines and stations are remembered. Finally, there are individual chapters covering Leeds, Doncaster, Barnsley and the coalfields, Sheffield and Rotherham, Airedale and Wharfedale, the Aire and Calder watershed, the Calder Valley and Huddersfield.

Book Synopsis George Hudson: The Railway King by : Matthew Wells
Download or read book George Hudson: The Railway King written by Matthew Wells and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2024-09-30 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Hudson was the greatest British railway entrepreneur of the 19th century. In 1848, he controlled over 1,000 miles of railway and, when it came to railway promotion, it seemed he could do no wrong. However, in early 1849 it came to light that some of his business methods had been less than ethical and he was forced to relinquish the chairmanship of each of his companies. His fall from grace was spectacular and his detractors, of whom there were many, were quick to denounce him as a fraudster, a charlatan and a crook. Even today, when the name George Hudson is mentioned, these same insults are often levelled at him. This new biography takes a fresh look at Hudson’s extraordinary life, from his humble beginnings as a farmer’s boy, to becoming Lord Mayor of York before catching the railway bug. He was MP for Sunderland between 1845 and 1859. After his fall from grace, Hudson endured a 20-year court battle with the York and North Midland Railway (subsequently the North Eastern Railway) for outstanding debts. Hudson made many mistakes in creating his railway empire, but did he deserve all the vitriol that still accompanies his reputation? In seeking to answer this question, Matthew Wells looks at the evidence, including what was said about Hudson during his lifetime and what Hudson himself had to say about the actions he took.
Book Synopsis The Golden Age of Yorkshire Steam and Beyond by : Peter Hadfield
Download or read book The Golden Age of Yorkshire Steam and Beyond written by Peter Hadfield and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2021-01-18 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Golden Age of Yorkshire Steam and Beyond includes a wealth of unique memories and experiences from a collection of railway enthusiasts, who in their youth were fascinated by the steam locomotives that ruled the rails. Discover what it was like growing up in York and experiencing the sights and sounds of the giants of the former LNER system, including A4s, A3s, A2s, A1s and V2s, along with the Jubilees, the Royal Scots, and Black Fives of the former LMS system and the BR Standards. Explore life on the footplate of the engines allocated to Royston shed, right up to the end of steam. Read about the push and pull service that ran from Cudworth - Barnsley - Cudworth across the iconic Oaks Viaduct, as well as the Barnsley - Doncaster and York - Doncaster - Darlington journeys. Memories of Leeds, Normanton, Doncaster, Wath and Penistone are also included, in addition to shed layout drawings of Royston, Doncaster and York. Providing a fascinating insight into a railway system now long gone, the book is designed to ignite the memories of anyone who enjoyed the thrill of trainspotting during the 1950s and early 1960s, when steam was still king, before the rapid introduction of diesel and electric traction led to the complete elimination of steam from the rail network in 1968, with the exception of Flying Scotsman. The 1970s saw the return of steam on the mainline with steam specials powered by preserved locomotives.

Book Synopsis The Planet and Samson Locomotives by : Anthony Dawson
Download or read book The Planet and Samson Locomotives written by Anthony Dawson and published by Pen and Sword Transport. This book was released on 2023-07-30 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Stephenson’s Planet class locomotive was the first true design of mainline express passenger locomotive. Delivered less than a year after Rocket it was one of the most successful early locomotive designs. Planet set the mold for British locomotive design for more than the next century featuring a multi tubular boiler; inside cylinders; crank axle; and the first use of proper frames. The Planet class, and its 0-4-0 Samson derivative, found use across Britain with examples being supplied to railways in London and Glasgow. The Planet class proved popular in Europe too with examples being first exported and then built in France. Two were exported to Austria, and the first locomotive to steam in Russia was based on the design. Planet and Samson also crossed the Atlantic with more examples being built in the United States than in Europe. A working replica of the revolutionary design was built in Manchester in 1992: the first mainline express passenger steam locomotive to be built in Britain since the 1960s. This book outlines the technical design of the Planet and Samson locomotive, and charts the careers of the class members at home and abroad.
