Book excerpt: The following are only a few of the many adventures that have occurred as I either worked on my house, hiked, hunted, or fished in the wilderness along Lake Superior. I have tried to include many different animals and landscapes so you can get an idea of what you may run into if you spend too much time here. I found it as a great escape from the hassles of modern life and also some good adventures. In greedy gut, I tried to show how caught up in the moment you can get, and the trouble that can follow if you push the limits of time and distance. It doesn't matter how many times you have covered it before. Weather conditions change a lot from summer to fall, and daylight time is vastly different also. Of course you usually have to learn the hard way. At other times, I have tried to emphasize that we humans are just visitors in the critters domain and that we are nothing special in their limited space, as in porkies rule, the opportunist and the spooky woods. I added a few stories of just trying to get by and how complicated it can become such as in the visitor who just dropped in and the siege. I also added our three dogs and one cat that became part of our family. I tried to show how each one adapted to the wilderness and interacted with the wild animals all around them.

Book excerpt: “A bizarre yet effective yoking of the spy and horror genres.” —The Washington Post Book World The Lovecraftian Singularity has descended upon the world in The Labyrinth Index, beginning an exciting new story arc in Charles Stross' Hugo Award-winning Laundry Files series! Since she was promoted to the head of the Lords Select Committee on Sanguinary Affairs, every workday for Mhari Murphy has been a nightmare. It doesn’t help that her boss, the new Prime Minister of Britain, is a manipulative and deceptive pain in the butt. But what else can she expect when working under the thumb of none other than the elder god N’yar Lat-Hotep a.k.a the Creeping Chaos? Mhari's most recent assignment takes her and a ragtag team of former Laundry agents across the pond into the depths of North America. The United States president has gone missing. Not that Americans are alarmed. For some mysterious reason, most of the country has forgotten the executive branch even exists. Perhaps it has to do with the Nazgûl currently occupying the government and attempting to summon Cthulhu. It's now up to Mhari and her team to race against the Nazgûl's vampire-manned dragnet to find and, for his own protection, kidnap the president. Who knew an egomaniacal, malevolent deity would have a soft spot for international relations?

Tommy Cannon and Bobby Ball broke all records for capacity audiences at the London Palladium and the longest running show in Blackpool. They are still doing summer seasons and pantomime seasons each year as well as their gospel shows. In this book they tell their own story. The famous duo chart their careers; the laughter and pain along the way; the changes that conversion to Christian faith brought for both of them. And it is all told in their honest, blunt, down-to-earth style.

Download or read book Tim & Tom written by Tim Reid and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the heady promise of the 1960s sagged under the weight of widespread violence, rioting, and racial unrest, two young men--one black and one white--took to stages across the nation to help Americans confront their racial divide: by laughing at it. Tim and Tom tells the story of that pioneering duo, the first interracial comedy team in the history of show business--and the last. Tim Reid and Tom Dreesen polished their act in the nightclubs of Chicago, then took it on the road, not only in the North, but in the still-simmering South as well, developing routines that even today remain surprisingly frank--and remarkably funny--about race. Most nights, the shock of seeing an integrated comedy team quickly dissipated in uproarious laughter, but on some occasions the audience’s confusion and discomfort led to racist heckling, threats, and even violence. Though Tim and Tom perpetually seemed on the verge of making it big throughout their five years together, they grudgingly came to realize that they were ahead of their time: America was not yet ready to laugh at its own failed promise. Eventually, the grind of the road took its toll, as bitter arguments led to an acrimonious breakup. But the underlying bond of friendship Reid and Dreesen had forged with each groundbreaking joke has endured for decades, while their solo careers delivered the success that had eluded them as a team. By turns revealing, shocking, and riotously funny, Tim and Tom unearths a largely forgotten chapter in the history of comedy.
