Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yoichi Ohira is a Japanese glass artist who has been living and working in Venice for more than twenty-five years. After years of work combining the deep aesthetic tradition of Japan with the centuries-old techniques of Venetian glass-making, he burst onto the international scene with two highly successful gallery shows and is now regarded as one of the premier glass artists working today. His work is in the collection of major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Craft Museum, and he has been exhibited alongside works by Dale Chihuly, Lino Tagliapietra, Carlo Scarpa, Alvar Aalto, and others. This deluxe edition accompanies an exhibit of Ohira's work in the fall of 2002. It includes more than 300 works, 100 of them new. All of the works are reproduced in high-quality prints that vividly illustrate the color and luminosity of his art. Essays by Attilia Dorigato, Jean Luc Olivie, Susanne K. Franz, William Warmus, and Rosa Barovier Mentasti accompany the plates.

North of San Polo, Cannaregio was the old Jewish quarter; Santa Croce, to the west, has the most beautiful churches in Venice. Dorsoduro, southwest of San Marco, is known for its art galleries, while Castello, to the east, was the city’s maritime center. The six chapters each open with an introduction followed by a map of the itinerary highlighting the route’s stages and providing detailed information on the various sites. Each visit to the district is supplemented by an in-depth “In Detail” section, aimed at an important site; a “This Is Venice” section, which provides information on a characteristic element of the neighborhood; and one “The Best” section, which groups the best sites by theme. CUSTOMIZED TOURS: The guide provides nine tailor-made tours, including everything from shopping, food and wine tastings, and evenings at the opera; admiring the facades of the buildings reflecting on the Grand Canal; day or weekend timelines to help you get the most out of a destination; and highlights for art lovers, good food and wine, and travellng with children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of interwoven historical narratives that present an intriguing and little known account of the Ogasawara (Bonin) archipelago and its inhabitants. The narratives begin in the seventeenth century and weave their way through various events connected to the ambitions, hopes, and machinations of individuals, communities, and nations. At the center of these narratives are the Bonin Islanders, originally an eclectic mix of Pacific Islanders, Americans, British, French, German, Portuguese, Italian, and African settlers that first landed on the islands in 1830. The islands were British sovereign territory from 1827 to 1876, when the Japanese asserted possession of the islands based on a seventeenth century expedition and a myth of a samurai discoverer. As part of gaining sovereign control, the Japanese government made all island inhabitants register as Japanese subjects of the national family register. The islanders were not literate in Japanese and had little experience of Japanese culture and limited knowledge of Japanese society, but by 1881 all were forced or coerced into becoming Japanese subjects. By the 1930s the islands were embroiled in the Pacific War. All inhabitants were evacuated to the Japanese mainland until 1946 when only the descendants of the original settlers were allowed to return. In the postwar period the islands fell under U.S. Navy administration until they were reverted to full Japanese sovereignty in 1968. Many descendants of these original settlers still live on the islands with family names such as Washington, Gonzales, Gilley, Savory, and Webb. This book explores the social and cultural history of these islands and its inhabitants and provides a critical approach to understanding the many complex narratives that make up the Bonin story.
