Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Westshore is a community on the western fringes of Tampa that has served as a hub of commerce and entertainment for many decades. Growing from agricultural lands near the northeastern shores of Old Tampa Bay in the late 19th century, Westshore has seen a multitude of transformations over the past century that helped put the Tampa Bay area on the map, including the development of a small airstrip that later became Tampa International Airport and the construction of a football stadium that lured the National Football League to award Tampa its own franchise--the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Since the 1960s, the community has also seen an outstanding concentration of commercial space that collectively earned Westshore bragging rights as the largest office market in Florida. Yet Westshore is more than a nine-to-five nerve center of commerce. With two regional malls, hundreds of shops and restaurants, and more than 15,000 residents, Westshore has grown into one of the most vivacious regions of Tampa.

Leitner of Wilmington, North Carolina, Tampa Union Station has seen millions of travelers pass through its doors since its 1912 opening--from servicemen and women to flower children and from families on vacation to college kids setting out on their own. Once threatened with demolition, the train station reopened its doors to the traveling public in 1998 following a multimillion-dollar restoration. Download or read book African American Sites in Florida written by Kevin M McCarthy and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-07-24 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Americans have risen from the slave plantations of nineteenth-century Florida to become the heads of corporations and members of Congress in the twenty-first century. They have played an important role in making Florida the successful state it is today. This book takes you on a tour, through the 67 counties, of the sites that commemorate the role of African Americans in Florida's history. If we can learn more about our past, both the good and the not-so-good, we can make better decisions in the future. Behind the hundreds of sites in this book are the courageous African Americans like Brevard County's Malissa Moore, who hosted many Saturday night dinners to raise money to build a church, and Miami-Dade's Gedar Walker, who built the first-rate Lyric Theater for black performers. And of course also featured are the more famous black Floridians like Zora Neale Hurston, Jackie Robinson, Mary McCleod Bethune, and Ray Charles.

Book Synopsis Thoughts From Yesterday by : Glen Thomas Hierlmeier
Download or read book Thoughts From Yesterday written by Glen Thomas Hierlmeier and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2013-01-24 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My life has been so rich owing to the people who I have been blessed to know, who have provided the substance to write about, and I have been in so many wonderful places. Once I capture a theme, I mull it over for days, or weeks and months, sometimes years. I may write several drafts in my mind before I write a single word. Sometimes the first writing of a story will come out in more or less final draft form. I tend to be very serious in my writing; I choose serious subjects, then I try to honor my commitment that a good story should make you laugh and cry, and relate to the people, places and things in the story. Unfortunately, there is often much more crying than laughing. I’ll keep working on that. You should know that I have cried first. As I write, I relive my stories; there are some I have read many times---and I have cried over them every time, as much the last as the first. As my subtitle relates, this is an unfinished work. There are many more stories and essays, letters, poems, and such that I still have in mind to write. I hope to get to many more of them so we can share the special people, places, and things of our lives. I have been encouraged to go ahead with what I have, knowing that I will keep writing, and keep crying, and laughing some too.

Persuaded to assume the role of consultant to the homicide division soon has him and Detective Carly Truffant on the trail of a serial killer who mutilates his victims. Uncovering the identity of the killer proves as difficult as understanding why rookie Detective Dani Mc Masters resents him being a part of the team. An unexpected turn of events finds Joe and McMasters trapped and fighting for their lives. Then, his dream of a peaceful getaway is shattered when he finds himself in the middle of an investigation during his visit to a small community on the coast of southwest Florida. The help of a stranger before joining forces with the lead detective doesn’t keep him from the prospect of winding up in a watery grave. Upon his return home, Joe helps Detective Truffant trace the origin of human bones uncovered on a local beach. As they dig deeper, they come to realize that the skeleton may have a connection to the disappearance of an aunt that Truffant never knew. Praise for YESTERDAY RISING: “An authentic police voice. Book Synopsis Sunshine Paradise by : Tracy J. Revels
Download or read book Sunshine Paradise written by Tracy J. Revels and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For nearly two hundred years, Floridians have eagerly exploited tourism as the key to economic prosperity. As a result, the state has constantly reshaped and remodeled itself as different types of tourist heavens, and many aspects of its history have become inseparable from the fantastic images created by the tourism industry. From spa retreats to nature preserves, from riverboat rides to roller coasters, and from railroads to theme parks, the state’s dependence on tourism has greatly shaped its identity. Sunshine Paradise is the first book to focus exclusively on how--and why--tourism came to define Florida. Offering a concise look at the subject from the 1820s to the present, Tracy Revels demonstrates tourism’s relevance to all other major aspects of Florida history, including the Civil War, the land boom, and civil rights. In this enjoyable and well-written history, Revels shows how Florida’s tourism industry has remained adaptive and expansive, ready to sell the next version of paradise to northerners hungry for sunshine. She also explains why the state’s business and political leaders must consider the history of tourism development as they plan for the state’s future. A volume in the Florida History and Culture Series, edited by Raymond Arsenault and Gary R. Mormino
Download or read book Lift written by Jim Laudell and published by Elm Hill. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the weary, the broken, the discouraged and the disconnected, LIFT, is the power of encouragement, the strength underneath you, to LIFT you to the next level. In the face of your dilemma, God makes “a way where there seems no way.” A Boeing 747 maximum takeoff weight is 970,000 lbs. yet it lifts seamlessly from the tarmac into the air embarking on its incredible journey. Defying gravity, the aerodynamic thrust of air beneath its wings, defined as lift, takes the burden-laden aircraft into the skies. The mighty eagle, with its nearly 7.5 ft. wingspan, graciously rises above the earth; lift is the strength to take the fearless eagle higher. God promises in Isaiah to those who wait upon the Lord, “They will rise up as eagles,” God is the invisible strength underneath us to LIFT us to a higher level. What you cannot do on your own, LIFT turns the wilderness into a classroom, purging into fruitfulness and prayer into a delight. Each chapter stands alone in leading us out of discouragement and into encouragement. With questions after each chapter, the book is designed for personal devotion or for group study.
