Book excerpt: There's a strong interest in reading for pleasure or self-improvement in America, as shown by the popularity of Harry Potter, and book clubs, including Oprah Winfrey's. Although recent government reports show a decline in recreational reading, the same reports show a strong correlation between interest in reading and academic acheivement. This set provides a snapshot of the current state of popular American literature, including various types and genres. The volume presents alphabetically arranged entries on more than 70 diverse literary categories, such as cyberpunk, fantasy literature, flash fiction, GLBTQ literature, graphic novels, manga and anime, and zines. Each entry is written by an expert contributor and provides a definition of the genre, an overview of its history, a look at trends and themes, a discussion of how the literary form engages contemporary issues, a review of the genre's reception, a discussion of authors and works, and suggestions for further reading. Sidebars provide fascinating details, and the set closes with a selected, general bibliography. Reading in America for pleasure and knowledge continues to be popular, even while other media compete for attention. While students continue to read many of the standard classics, new genres have emerged. These have captured the attention of general readers and are also playing a critical role in the language arts classroom. This book maps the state of popular literature and reading in America today, including the growth of new genres, such as cyberpunk, zines, flash fiction, GLBTQ literature, and other topics. Each entry is written by an expert contributor and provides a definition of the genre, an overview of its history, a look at trends and themes, a discussion of how the literary form engages contemporary issues, a review of the genre's critical reception, a discussion of authors and works, and suggestions for further reading. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The era of pulp magazine extended from about 1896 to about 1957. The pulp magazines dealt in fiction that was, by reason of audience and the medium, heightened beyond normal experience. The drama was intensive, colors vivid, pace exhausting. The characters moving through these prose dreams were heightened, too. Most were cast in quasi-heroic mold and moved on elevated planes of accomplishment. Sixty years of fiction-making created immense numbers of characters. Most glimmered briefly and vanished. After them crowded others, equally ephemeral. Certain characters rose above their casual origins. Various factors brought them intense popularity. This book, and its companion volumes, are concerned with the slow boiling and shaping of many literary conventions over many decades. This volume will begin with dime novels and several early series characters who influenced the direction of pulp fiction at its source. Later volumes will be concerned with the 'teens and 'twenties, examining characters that have played distinctive parts in the history of pulp fiction.

Book excerpt: America, still today, for many people throughout the world remains an attraction; instead, for many others, they see America as a beacon of hope from political and religious oppressions to the needs to overcome hunger from their countries poor economic conditions. Nevertheless, "Remembering Yesterday," talks about a timid little immigrant boy named Gregorio; his wonderful protective mother; his working, dedicated, and honest father, who was forced to immigrate to six different countries before coming to America, looking for work so his family could survive; and his two siblings: Andrea, the daring one; and Matteo, the thick headed one. The book opens up with the main character Gregorio Di Nardo as an adult teaching English as a Second Language at a local Community College, to immigrant adult students. the author then moves to narrate more about the main character as a little boy growing up in his little village. The story continues with some surprising and unexpected information: Gregorio and his family would be leaving their little town for America. The news upsets the little boy for abandoning his present existence, his friends, the piazza, and his small house; but his mother and siblings however, were happy as they could be to leave the poor conditions behind and embrace new ones knowing they were starting from nothing. The narration picks up with a long dangerous journey to America: first on a train, then on transatlantic boat named "Vulcania", and finally growing up to adulthood in the city of Newark with no language, no friends, no one to cling to except his parents and two siblings. The family settles in the city of Newark, where they lived and experienced Newark reality at its best and safest period; as well as its downfall. It is here where they first experienced one of the many gloomy embarrassments, despondent, sour moments of racism and hardships. The desperate souls came with nothing except their clothes, a strong will to work and produce; and to overcome the hunger they left behind due to poor economic conditions they were subjected to.

Book excerpt: On 14 June 1919 – eight years before Charles Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic – two men from Manchester took off in an open-cockpit Vickers Vimy and flew into the history books. They battled through a sixteen-hour journey of snow, ice and continuous cloud, with a non-functioning wireless and a damaged exhaust that made it impossible to hear each other. And then, just five hours away from Ireland and high above the sea, the Vimy stalled. Yesterday We Were in America is the incredible story of John Alcock and Arthur Whitten Brown, and how they gave hope to a post-war world that was in grave need of it.
