Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Among the many recent trends in education reform is the endorsement for a change in the traditional school calendar. The most important change would be the removal of the long summer break, and equally spacing out instructional time with vacation time. The question remains, however, on whether or not year-round schooling is a more suitable and beneficial option than traditional calendar schools. To answer this question, the researcher studied student achievement studies, including those that focused on the performance of at-risk students. The researcher also focused on multi-track schools, as well as the opinions of families, teachers, and administrators with exposure to year-round schools. At the conclusion of the literature review, there is no black and white answer to the year-round school debate. While year-round schooling can improve student performance in some cases, the results are varied and the factors influencing the decision are multitudinous."--Leaf 4.

Download or read book Year-Round Versus Traditional Schools written by LeighAnne Lyttle and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document serves as a literature review for the practicality and cost effectiveness of traditional versus year-round school systems. The differences in year-round and traditional schools are many, as the debate lingers on which type is best for students' learning. Generally conclusive, the literature indicates that year-round schools' benefits far outweigh those in traditional calendar schools. It was found that students scored higher on yearly state exams that were enrolled in year-round schools and their achievement levels were better than their counterparts. The expenditure of operating the year-round school was deemed to be beneficial to the students and faculty and not much more than it costs to operate on a traditional system. Teacher motivation and satisfaction was immensely higher in year-round schools. The normal schedule allows for a break in between eight weeks of class, this gives ample time for teachers and students to rest and get ready to begin again. The turnover rates among teachers are much lower in year-round schools as well. Far and above the year-round school system surpasses it's inferior, the traditional calendar school.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine if there was a difference of opinions of teachers and parents of students who attend year-round calendar schools from those of teachers and parents of students who attend traditional calendar schools. A random sampling was taken from teachers and parents from schools in both Blount and Sevier Counties. The surveys were given to teachers who worked in a traditional school setting, teachers who worked in the year-round school setting, parents who had children attending a traditional school, and parents who had children attending a year-round school. A 3-point scale was used on the survey to measure each question. The findings from this study conclude that teachers and parents of students who attend yearround calendar schools tend to have more favorable opinions about their school setting as opposed to teachers and parents of students who attend traditional calendar schools. Parents' and teachersâ perceptions were analyzed regarding academic performance, and opinions on school calendars.

Book Synopsis Year-round Education, Year-round Opportunities by : Claire Quinlan
Download or read book Year-round Education, Year-round Opportunities written by Claire Quinlan and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An increase in the number of schools adopting year-round programs prompted this analysis of all year-round education programs in California. Chapter 1, "Introduction to the Study," outlines study organization and calendar scheduling plans. "Design of the Study," chapter 2, describes data obtained from interviews, surveys, databases, site visits, and California Assessment Program files. Chapter 3, "Academic Achievement in Year-round Schools," interprets achievement data. Compared to traditional schools, year-round schools most frequently serve lower socioeconomic communities and have twice as many limited and non-English-speaking students and a larger percentage of minority students. Many schools are not achieving at predicted levels, though single-track schools have the strongest performance. Chapter 4, "Cost Analysis," reveals that increased per-pupil costs compare with those of traditional programs. "Characteristics of the Year-round Education Program," chapter 5, discusses operations and survey results. Teachers experienced better quality instruction and preferred teaching year-round. Students had mixed feelings about school scheduling. Parents' overall satisfaction was positive. The final chapter, "Conclusions and Recommendations," indicates that year-round education is an acceptable alternative. Overcrowding is relieved, new school construction is avoided, and flexible curriculum planning and extended teacher employment are offered. Recommendations are provided to districts and state agencies. Twenty-one tables and 13 figures exhibit data findings; 5 appendices provide survey instruments. (CJH)

Book excerpt: The purpose of this project is to research how a school district can benefit by making a transition from a traditional nine-month calendar to a year-round calendar. The project provides information to the reader on academic, financial, and social aspects of a change to a year-round school calendar. The pros and cons of all stakeholders is discussed as well as best practices for starting a transition for a traditional calendar to a year-round calendar. Research shows that increased student achievement can result from the use of a year-round school calendar. The goal of public education is to provide the best education possible for students. As educators in the twenty first century, it is important to start thinking differently in order to provide the best education possible. Good habits are developed through repetition of good practices. If learning is to be a life-long process, it would be more beneficial to have year-round schooling.

Book excerpt: "The purpose of this study is to look at year round schools verses traditional school calendars and determine if achievement scores are higher in year round schools verses traditional schools. The research includes the question, "Is there a difference with student achievement on standardized assessments between year round schools and traditional calendar schools?" The research compares Benchmark scores of students in year round schools and traditional calendar schools in a Midwest location. The data was collected from the department of education under the testing tab from a Midwest state's web site. ASP and Microsoft Excel were used to analyze the data. The year round schools did not show a significant difference in standardized Benchmark scores from traditional calendar schools. The different type of year round schools will be discussed. Reasons will be shown why some districts have decided to adopt a year round schedule."
Book Synopsis School Calendar and Academic Achievement by : Monica Lucille Huband
Download or read book School Calendar and Academic Achievement written by Monica Lucille Huband and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quantitative, causal-comparative study posed two research questions: (1) What is the relationship between the type of academic calendar and achievement in reading and mathematics for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds? and (2) Does the type of academic calendar affect the amount of summer learning loss experienced by students from low socioeconomic backgrounds. The sample was comprised of 33 year-round schools and 33 traditional calendar schools in a Southeastern state where at least 40% of the student populations were eligible for the federally supported free or reduced-cost lunch program. Archival achievement data were analyzed using an independent samples t test to determine the statistical significance of the relationship between the academic achievement of students from year-round and traditional calendar schools. The summer learning loss experienced in year-round and traditional calendar schools was measured by calculating improvement scores and compared using an independent samples t test. Study results indicated that school calendars did not significantly influence academic achievement or summer learning loss among fourth grade classes from economically disadvantaged schools in a Southeastern state. These results implied that both year-round and traditional school calendars are equally valuable in terms of academic outcomes. This work contributes to the body of knowledge on school calendar modification and the socioeconomic achievement gap. The theoretical foundation for this study was provided by the spaced learning effect because it addressed the potential of spaced learning intervals to increase the rate of students' information retention.
