Book excerpt: “Will you ever stop loving her?” Shweta was yelling as Ayaan was walking away. He turned back and looked at Rhea for the last time. “Maybe Yes,” Ayaan murmured to himself and continued walking amidst the heavy snowfall. Ayaan struggles to answer the question. He is bewildered, as he still does not have the answer after fifteen years. He is a simple guy with simple tastes, sitting in the corner, watching it all happen around him in which he cannot participate. Nevertheless, he decides to leave no stone unturned when it comes to grabbing an opportunity to overturn the old sissy life. However, all his planning and plotting for turning his life around is flushed down the gutter when Rhea enters his life. It pushes him off the ledge and throws him into the pit of ambiguity. His past haunts him, because of which he is not able to confess his feelings to the girl he loves. He keeps on encountering her in different phases of his life in the span of fifteen years. Maybe Yes is a saga about love, friendship, and finding oneself.

Book excerpt: A book about the power of love and resistance from New York Times bestselling authors Becky Albertalli and Aisha Saeed. YES Jamie Goldberg is cool with volunteering for his local state senate candidate—as long as he’s behind the scenes. When it comes to speaking to strangers (or, let’s face it, speaking at all to almost anyone) Jamie’s a choke artist. There’s no way he’d ever knock on doors to ask people for their votes…until he meets Maya. NO Maya Rehman’s having the worst Ramadan ever. Her best friend is too busy to hang out, her summer trip is canceled, and now her parents are separating. Why her mother thinks the solution to her problems is political canvassing—with some awkward dude she hardly knows—is beyond her. MAYBE SO Going door to door isn’t exactly glamorous, but maybe it’s not the worst thing in the world. After all, the polls are getting closer—and so are Maya and Jamie. Mastering local activism is one thing. Navigating the cross-cultural crush of the century is another thing entirely.

Book excerpt: In the heart of the new millennium, worlds beyond our imagination have opened up, blurring the line between life and art. Embracing the challenges and possibilities of cyberspace, genetics, the universe, and beyond, the world of science fiction has become a porthole into the realities of tomorrow. In The Year's Best Science Fiction Twenty-third Annual Collection, our very best SF authors explore ideas of a new world with such compelling stories as: "Beyond the Aquila Rift": Critically acclaimed author Alastair Reynolds takes readers to the edge of the universe, where no voyager has dared to travel before---or so we think. "Comber": Our world is an ever-changing one, and award-winning author Gene Wolfe explores the darker side of our planet's fluidity in his own beautiful and inimitable style. "Audubon in Atlantis": In a world not quite like our own, bestselling author Harry Turtledove shows us that there are reasons some species have become extinct. The twenty-nine stories in this collection imaginatively take us far across the universe, into the very core of our beings, to the realm of the gods, and the moment just after now. Included here are the works of masters of the form and of bright new talents, including:Neal Asher, Paolo Bacigalupi, Stephen Baxter, Elizabeth Bear, Chris Beckett, Dominic Green, Daryl Gregory, Joe Haldeman, Gwyneth Jones, James Patrick Kelley, Jay Lake and Ruth Nestvold, Ken MacLeod, Ian McDonald, Vonda N. McIntyre, David Moles, Derryl Murphy, Steven Popkes, Hannu Rajaniemi, Alastair Reynolds, Robert Reed, Chris Roberson, Mary Rosenblum, William Sanders, Bruce Sterling, Michael Swanwick, Harry Turtledove, Peter Watts, Liz Williams, and Gene Wolfe. Supplementing the stories are the editor's insightful summation of the year's events and a lengthy list of honorable mentions, making this book both a valuable resource and the single best place in the universe to find stories that stir the imagination and the heart.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Miami family returning from fishing on Biscayne Bay spots a body floating in the water. It’s the second body found in two months. The story is reported by an independent TV station. The local mob “family,” run by Richie Walnuts, owns the station and is behind the murders to conceal resistance to the sale of phony high-end “wine” to small independent Italian grocery stores. Parker Gross, a small-time hustler and wannabe “family” member, has inherited a failing bug extermination business. Walnuts uses it as cover to bring the “wine” in through a sea port claiming it’s bug spray. Walnuts makes Gross the stations general manager to tip him off about police activities. One of the vans carrying the phony “wine” is high-jacked and the station is told what it really is. Gross is desperate to find the van so Walnuts won’t kill him. Sarah Grace runs the news department at the TV station and was called about the stolen “wine” van. The station had broadcast the story about the body found in Biscayne Bay and now has a story about phony “wine.” She wants help with the story and assigns Dan Crosby, a cameraman, and former member of a secret military unit known only as “The Tribe” to find out more. Crosby has no recollection of his past or that the White House and Pentagon were directing his military activities. Grace knows nothing about his background. On their first date, in Walnut’s restaurant, his memory is triggered. It was an assignment in Atlanta to “take Walnuts out” for cocaine distribution and stealing military weapons and selling them to a Middle Eastern country. Crosby failed the mission. Crosby, suspects Grosses involvement, follows him to a meeting with Walnuts and then to a seedy sea port where Fat Tony, a Walnuts relative, helps get the phony “wine” off the ship. Crosby follows Gross to a warehouse in Little Havana and watches the “wine” changed into a high-end “wine” product not fit to drink. Importing the “wine” is only a test for Walnuts. He is planning on bringing in a large quantity of cocaine and Gross, learning about it, plans to steal it. Crosby, finding out what is hidden inside the “wine” barrel, is tasked again by “The Tribe” and government officials to “get the job done this time” and stop Walnuts before he gets the cocaine. It’s Atlanta a second time. But a member of Walnuts “family” has other plans and something unexpected happens that Grace captures on film. Will Crosby’s background be uncovered? Will Walnuts get away a second time? Will Grace accept who Crosby really is?

Book excerpt: “Like [Elmore] Leonard, McFetridge is able to convincingly portray flawed figures on both sides of the law” (Publishers Weekly). Montreal, Labor Day weekend, 1972. The city is getting ready to host the first game in the legendary Summit Series between Canada and the USSR. Three men set fire to a nightclub and thirty-seven people die. The Museum of Fine Arts is robbed and two million dollars’ worth of paintings are stolen. Against the backdrop of these historic events, Constable Eddie Dougherty discovers the body of a murdered young man on Mount Royal. As he tries to prove he has the stuff to become a detective, he is drawn into the world of American draft dodgers and deserters, class politics, and organized crime . . . “This terrific continuation of the narrative McFetridge began in Black Rock opens with a bang . . . Working with a deceptively simple style that echoes Joseph Wambaugh, McFetridge has delivered an unpredictable mystery, a fine character study, and a vivid snapshot of 1972 Montreal.” —Publishers Weekly “Brilliant . . . As a police procedural, A Little More Free is superb. As a sociopolitical human drama, it’s even better—remember to breathe during those final few pages.” —Winnipeg Free Press

Rich with personal reflections and anecdotes from the author’s many years as a family therapist, this volume’s major strength lies in its precise definition of the process and content of the therapy itself. As the family is the major resource system available to an individual, this important book provides therapists with the keys for helping family members help each other and provides a framework for understanding how the family, as a multigenerational system, moves through various stages of the therapeutic process. By emphasizing the importance of family members utilizing the past as a positive force for change and featuring complete transcripts of family therapy sessions, this sensitive book clearly illustrates how therapists can use the positive forces of family for dealing with today’s uncertainties and dilemmas. The step-by-step approach details how family therapists can work with families in a positive, healing manner. Several chapters illustrate the transition from the beginning to middle phases of family therapy to the terminating phase and provide a framework for how therapy evolves over time. Other chapters discuss the special skills required to work with various family constellations, such as couples, parents with children, siblings, adult children with aged parents, and individuals as well as extended family members. Helpful advice on how to deal with special issues and dilemmas of family therapy such as secret-keeping, affairs, co-therapy, crises and emergencies is also included in this comprehensive book. Beginning and advanced family therapy practitioners, students of family theory and therapy, faculty of social work practice, clinical psychology, nursing, family life education, and counseling psychology will find many positive ideas for working with families in this detailed book.

Book excerpt: “One of the most remarkable prose stylists to emerge from the noir tradition in this century.” –Stephen King “Hard-boiled horror, pulp noir vampires, decaying urban souls– you’re gonna need a shower after this one. . . . [Huston] kicks down the door of horror.” –Fangoria, on Already Dead There’s only so much room on the Island, only so much blood, and Manhattan’s Vampyre Clans aren’t interested in sharing. So when the Vyrus-infected dregs of New York’s outer boroughs start creeping across the bridges and through the tunnels, the Clans want to know why. Bad luck for PI and general hard case Joe Pitt. See, Joe used to be a Rogue, used to work off his own dime, picked his own gigs, but tight times and a terminally ill girlfriend pushed him into the arms of the renegade Society Clan. Now he has all the cash and blood he needs, but at a steep price. The price tonight is crossing the bridge, rolling to Coney Island, finding the Freak Clan, and figuring out what’s driving that bunch of savages to scratch at the Society’s door. No need to look far. The answer lies around the corner in Gravesend. Convenient, all those graves. From uptown to the boardwalk, war drums are beating. Murderous family feuds and personal grudges are being drawn and brandished, along with the long knives. Blood will spill and, big surprise, Joe’s in the middle. But hey, why should this night be different from any other? Sunset to sunrise: put off a war, keep your head attached to your neck, and save your girl. Check. Joe’s on the case. Praise for Charlie Huston and his Joe Pitt novels “In conceiving his world (a New York City divided by vampire clans, each with different reasons to hate Pitt), Huston gives a fading genre a fresh afterlife. [Grade:] A.” –Entertainment Weekly “[Huston] creates a world that is at once supernatural and totally familiar, imaginative, and utterly convincing.” –The Philadelphia Inquirer

If you are expecting another dry heap of irrelevant missiological research you are going to be sadly disappointed. With flair and wit Cody C. Lorance slices through the chaff of ethnographic examination to produce Ethnographic Chicago, a lively and energetic missiological rumination that has major ramifications for the Southern Baptist churches, as well as further afield. The local denominational venture is presented complete with all its warts and sparkling insights to encourage other North American missioners to employ similar missional reflection as well as to serve as a methodological case study to bring about growth for the Kingdom's sake."
