Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There once may have been 250,000 miles of stone walls in America's Northeast, stretching farther than the distance to the moon. They took three billion man-hours to build. And even though most are crumbling today, they contain a magnificent scientific and cultural story-about the geothermal forces that formed their stones, the tectonic movements that brought them to the surface, the glacial tide that broke them apart, the earth that held them for so long, and about the humans who built them. Stone walls layer time like Russian dolls, their smallest elements reflecting the longest spans, and Thorson urges us to study them, for each stone has its own story. Linking geological history to the early American experience, Stone by Stone presents a fascinating picture of the land the Pilgrims settled, allowing us to see and understand it with new eyes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996, a week before the birth of our child, Jake, I received a copy of the first book I authored, Outside Magazine's Adventure Guide to New England. I had spent the entirety of the prior year traversing the region in every season as I sampled the many trails, bike paths, rivers, lakes, and Atlantic Ocean as much as humanly possible, hiking two mountains a day if I could. Honestly, I couldn't get enough of the outdoors, gleefully paddling down remote rivers or mountain biking deep in the woods and laughing out loud that I'm getting paid to do this! Little did I realize, it would lead to a very rewarding career as a freelance travel writer, writing more than 2,000 articles, and working on another 8 books. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of my first book, I did a deep dive into the hundreds of stories I've written on the region for The Boston Globe, Yankee Magazine, Boston Magazine, Boston Herald, and many other publications. I distilled those stories down to their essence, eliminating fat, while updating and revising the copy. The result is what I believe is a definitive guide to the region, New England in a Nutshell.Instead of authoring a typical guidebook, I resorted to my favorite form of journalism, the round-up article. Perhaps it's my background as a chemical engineer, but I appreciate lean, succinct writing, especially when it comes to something as pragmatic as a guidebook. I want to get to the point quickly and tell you my favorite fall foliage routes, lobster shacks, art historical finds, and more than 50 other topics in this book. There's no better way to deliver this material than in short form so you can quickly peruse the subject and get there as soon as possible. Rest assured that these are my favorite picks, the one percent that made the cut. For example, I have visited over 1,000 inns this past quarter century in New England and I've only included my top 12 in that chapter.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forages through New England’s most famous foods for the truth behind the region’s culinary myths Meg Muckenhoupt begins with a simple question: When did Bostonians start making Boston Baked Beans? Storekeepers in Faneuil Hall and Duck Tour guides may tell you that the Pilgrims learned a recipe for beans with maple syrup and bear fat from Native Americans, but in fact, the recipe for Boston Baked Beans is the result of a conscious effort in the late nineteenth century to create New England foods. New England foods were selected and resourcefully reinvented from fanciful stories about what English colonists cooked prior to the American revolution—while pointedly ignoring the foods cooked by contemporary New Englanders, especially the large immigrant populations who were powering industry and taking over farms around the region. The Truth about Baked Beans explores New England’s culinary myths and reality through some of the region’s most famous foods: baked beans, brown bread, clams, cod and lobster, maple syrup, pies, and Yankee pot roast. From 1870 to 1920, the idea of New England food was carefully constructed in magazines, newspapers, and cookbooks, often through fictitious and sometimes bizarre origin stories touted as time-honored American legends. This toothsome volume reveals the effort that went into the creation of these foods, and lets us begin to reclaim the culinary heritage of immigrant New England—the French Canadians, Irish, Italians, Portuguese, Polish, indigenous people, African-Americans, and other New Englanders whose culinary contributions were erased from this version of New England food. Complete with historic and contemporary recipes, The Truth about Baked Beans delves into the surprising history of this curious cuisine, explaining why and how “New England food” actually came to be.
