Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Traffic of Dead Bodies enters the sphere of bodysnatching medical students, dissection-room pranks, and anatomical fantasy. It shows how nineteenth-century American physicians used anatomy to develop a vital professional identity, while claiming authority over the living and the dead. It also introduces the middle-class women and men, working people, unorthodox healers, cultural radicals, entrepreneurs, and health reformers who resisted and exploited anatomy to articulate their own social identities and visions. The nineteenth century saw the rise of the American medical profession: a proliferation of practitioners, journals, organizations, sects, and schools. Anatomy lay at the heart of the medical curriculum, allowing American medicine to invest itself with the authority of European science. Anatomists crossed the boundary between life and death, cut into the body, reduced it to its parts, framed it with moral commentary, and represented it theatrically, visually, and textually. Only initiates of the dissecting room could claim the privileged healing status that came with direct knowledge of the body. But anatomy depended on confiscation of the dead--mainly the plundered bodies of African Americans, immigrants, Native Americans, and the poor. As black markets in cadavers flourished, so did a cultural obsession with anatomy, an obsession that gave rise to clashes over the legal, social, and moral status of the dead. Ministers praised or denounced anatomy from the pulpit; rioters sacked medical schools; and legislatures passed or repealed laws permitting medical schools to take the bodies of the destitute. Dissection narratives and representations of the anatomical body circulated in new places: schools, dime museums, popular lectures, minstrel shows, and sensationalist novels. Michael Sappol resurrects this world of graverobbers and anatomical healers, discerning new ligatures among race and gender relations, funerary practices, the formation of the middle-class, and medical professionalization. In the process, he offers an engrossing and surprisingly rich cultural history of nineteenth-century America.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over a decade, Working Group 8 (Nursing) of the International Medical Informatics Association has sponsored, in conjunction with a host country, a triennial international symposium on nursing informatics. Each conference consists of a main conference and an invitational working conference following the main event. In 1991, the symposium was held in Melbourne, Australia and hosted by the Nursing Computer Group, Victoria and the Royal College of Nursing, Australia. Nine Pre-Conference workshops offered participants indepth exploration of a variety of information technology topics. The main conference attracted 700 participants from 19 countries and over 150 peer-reviewed papers. The invitational working conference was held at Whitehall in Sorrento, Victoria and involved the individual and collective work of 40 experts in nursing informatics from around the world. This group addressed the theme HEALTH CARE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY: IMPLICATIONS FOR CHANGE. Health care organizations are faced with growing demand for information technology and must cope effectively with the processes and outcomes of its introduction. As the impact of information technology is felt both on the local and the global level, the conference selected for its theme a three tiered approach to information technology and organisational change - through the lens of society, the organization, and the individual. The conference was organized around three forms of contribution: plenary talks, working groups, and individual contributions by the participants. Part one of this book contains the papers of the plenary speakers for the conference.

Book excerpt: This report of the Commission on the Rights, Liberties, and Responsibilities of the American Indian brings the dilemma of the modern Indian sharply into focus. A number of prominent anthropologists, historians, government officials, and other competent researchers discuss the problems of the Indians and what should be done to help these first Americans enjoy the rights, exercise the liberties, and assume the responsibilities of citizenship. Their findings point up the fact that the Indian is, indeed, America’s unfinished business. Significant facts are related concerning Indian values and background, assimilation, and population, the meaning of a reservation, and the role of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Landmarks in Indian law are also considered, including the Indian Reorganization Act and House Concurrent Resolution 108.

For labor and lactation oxytocin you must buy! Enkephalin always gives a good runner’s high! So won’t you try peptides? Small proteins, the best in the land!” The above words [1], penned by Gary Gisselman to open Peptide Ångst: La Triviata, the opera which made its world premiere on July 1, 1999, also serve as a fitting charge to the th 16 American Peptide Symposium. This latest edition of a premier biennial series was held under the auspices of the American Peptide Society, June 26–July 1, 1999, at the Minneapolis Convention Center, Minneapolis,Minnesota, with the undersigned serving as Co-Chairs. The fortunate coincidence of the calendar allowed us to set as the theme “Peptides for the New Millennium”, and in our judgment, the approximately 1200 participants [2] who converged in the Twin Cities from academic and industrial institutions in 36 countries were treated to an exciting and stimulating conference that left most everyone with an enthusiastic vision for the future of our field. The present Proceedings volume should serve as a handy reference source and succinct snapshot of peptide science at essentially its century mark – the clock having started with the initial contributions of Emil Fischer and Th. Curtius.
