Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sure to provoke discussion and debate as it offers a unique approach to some old and perplexing issues in the history of ancient Israel and its religion, Cook's study is a bold new proposal for synthesizing the social history of Israel's religious traditions. Among the many "Yahwisms" coexisting in ancient Israel was an initially small minority stream of theological tradition composed of geographically and socially diverse groups in northern and southern Israel. These groups shared a religious commitment to a covenantal, village-based, land-oriented Yahwism that arose before the emergence of Israelite kingship. It eventually rose to dominance, and its theology provided robust resources for dealing with the Babylonian exile. It thus came to occupy a prominent place in the present canon of the Hebrew Bible. Cook combines detailed study of biblical texts with a carefully constructed social-scientific method and body of data to argue for the early origins of biblical Yahwism. This book is written to be accessible to lay readers and also of significant interest to Hebrew Bible students and specialists." -- ‡c From publisher's description.

Book Synopsis Ethics in Ancient Israel by : John Barton

Download or read book Ethics in Ancient Israel written by John Barton and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics in Ancient Israel is a study of ethical thinking in ancient Israel from around the eighth to the second century BC. The evidence for this consists primarily of the Old Testament/Hebrew Bible and Apocrypha, but also other ancient Jewish writings such as the Dead Sea Scrolls and various anonymous and pseudonymous texts from shortly before the New Testament period. Professor John Barton argues that there were several models for thinking about ethics, including a 'divine command' theory, something approximating to natural law, a virtue ethic, and a belief in human custom and convention. Moreover, he examines ideas of reward and punishment, purity and impurity, the status of moral agents and patients, imitation of God, and the image of God in humanity. Barton maintains that ethical thinking can be found not only in laws but also in the wisdom literature, in the Psalms, and in narrative texts. There is much interaction with recent scholarship in both English and German. The book features discussion of comparative material from other ancient Near Eastern cultures and a chapter on short summaries of moral teaching, such as the Ten Commandments. This innovative work should be of interest to those concerned with the interpretation of the Old Testament but also to students of ethics.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bible Ethics: A Manual of Instruction in the History and Principles of Judaism, According to the Hebrew Scriptures It is the design of this little work to lead up, by progressive steps, to the study of the Bible. Its matter is Biblical. It is the religion and moral code of the Bible which is here taught, freed from the doc trines of theology. This is pure judaism, but is at the same time that in which Jew and non-jew agree, because it is religion shorn of that added material in' which no two sects entirely coincide. This thoroughly enlightening work endeavors to guide the reader on a journey through a long lost and well-hidden ancient Hebrew biblical understanding of ""The Everlasting Agreement."" The loss of this moral imperative has long plagued honestly spiritual people of all nations, and is more important and imperative today than at any other time in man's history prior to the flood of Noah. Take this journey back in time with Dr. Asher, following the ancestors to an understanding that may quickly change your life and the lives of those around you for countless generations. Within these pages, lies the proverbial infinite pond ripple. The Land of MEAT & Honey is a provocatively critical work delving into Gods singular most preeminent truth for humanity; and stands as a completely original work in our modern times. C.
