Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Located in the western piedmont of North Carolina, Yadkin County was hardly a hotbed of rebellion at the start of the Civil War. Many of the 1,200 men from Yadkin who served in the Confederate Army did so with distinction, but a number deserted. Some of these holed up in the Bond School House, and when the militia attempted to arrest them, four were killed and several others were wounded. This is a comprehensive accounting of how the county responded to the Civil War and the effect it had on Yadkin's citizens, civilian and military alike.

Book excerpt: Nestled between Pilot Mountain and the Blue Ridge Mountains, Yadkin County, North Carolina, is a beautiful region inhabited by energetic, hardworking Americans, descendants of the pioneers who settled there over two hundred years ago. A rural setting that is close to major metropolitan areas, the county's special appeal is its unique way of incorporating change while preserving its heritage and family values. Yadkin County: The First One Hundred Years will be enjoyed by older generations as a trip down memory lane; appreciated by younger generations as a glimpse of an era when life was harder, but perhaps simpler; and treasured by residents and visitors of all ages. It graciously reminds us of the importance of learning history to help us understand our past and succeed in the future as we deal with the computer age and move toward the twenty-first century.

Book Synopsis Surry County, North Carolina, Wills, 1771-1827 by : Jo White Linn
Download or read book Surry County, North Carolina, Wills, 1771-1827 written by Jo White Linn and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 1992 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on recorded wills and original wills at the North Carolina State Archives as well as "Loose Estate Papers" of intestates, these abstracts cover not only wills but powers of attorney, bonds, inventories, bills of sale, etc. Significantly, Surry County lay within the Granville Proprietary at its formation, and after Lord Granville's death in 1763 until 1778, the Proprietary land office did not reopen, making it very difficult--but for these will abstracts--for the present-day researcher to establish the residence of many individuals during that time period. What is more, as there are no extant marriage bonds for Surry County for the period 1771 to 1780, these will abstracts assume an importance out of all proportion to their customary value.

Book Synopsis Descendants of William Cromartie and Ruhamah Doane by : Amanda Cook Gilbert
Download or read book Descendants of William Cromartie and Ruhamah Doane written by Amanda Cook Gilbert and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 795 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This ambitious work chronicles 250 years of the Cromartie Family genealogical history. Included in the index of nearly 50,000 names are the current generations, and all of those preceding, which trace ancestry to our family patriarch, William Cromartie who was born in 1731 in Orkney, Scotland and his second wife, Ruhamah Doane who was born in 1745. Arriving in America in 1758, William Cromartie settled and developed a plantation on South River, a tributary of the Cape Fear near Wilmington, North Carolina. On April 2, 1766, William married Ruhamah Doane, a fifth generation descendant of a Mayflower passenger to Plymouth, Stephen Hopkins. If Cromartie is your last name, or that of one of your blood relatives, it is almost certain that you can trace your ancestry to one of the thirteen children of William Cromartie, his first wife, and Ruhamah Doane, who became the founding ancestors of our Cromartie Family in America: William Jr, James, Thankful, Elizabeth, Hannah Ruhamah, Alexander, John, Margaret Nancy, Mary, Catherine, Jean, Peter Patrick, and Ann E. Cromartie. These four volumes hold an account of the descent of each of these first-generation Cromarties in America, including personal antidotes, photographs, copies of family Bibles, wills and other historical documents. Their pages hold a personal record of our ancestors and where you belong in the Cromartie Family Tree.

Book Synopsis Tales from the North and the South by : Frances H. Casstevens
Download or read book Tales from the North and the South written by Frances H. Casstevens and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-11-28 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1862, James J. Archer was promoted to the rank of brigadier general by Robert E. Lee. Serving with distinction in prominent battles such as those at Bull Run, Chancellorsville and Harpers Ferry, this lawyer-turned-general earned not only the respect of his superiors but the esteem and admiration of his men. Imprisoned first at Fort Delaware and then at Johnson's Island, Archer was one of the "First Fifty" (and as it turned out only) officers to be part of a Confederate/Union prisoner exchange. Upon returning to the Confederacy, Archer resumed command and served until his death from battle wounds in October 1864. From doctors to lawyers and privates to generals, this volume records the stories of a few special people--such as General James Archer--who chose to serve their country during the Civil War. Twenty-four individuals from both sides of the Mason-Dixon line are remembered for their extraordinary and often little known contributions to the Confederate and Union causes. These include Colonel Thomas Rose, who was in charge of the Libby Prison tunnel; Colonel John R. Winston, who was one of the few to escape from the Federal prison on Johnson's Island; Sally Tompkins, who ran a private hospital in Richmond; and Sergeant Richard Kirkland, who risked his life to take water to the Federal troops at Fredericksburg. Other featured individuals include Susie Baker King Taylor, Colonel Hector McKethan, Dr. Mary Walker and Richard Thomas Zarvona. Contemporary sources include a variety of correspondence and diaries from these subjects and those who knew them. Appendices contain a roll of participants in the Great Locomotive Chase; a list of Federal prisoners who escaped through the Libby Prison tunnel; a directory of Confederate officers on board the Maple Leaf; and the history of the Congressional Medal of Honor and the Confederate Roll of Honor. A number of contemporary photographs are also included.
