This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes contain 365 of the 505 papers presented at the VUV-11 Conference, held at Rikkyo University, Tokyo, from August 27th to September 1st 1995. The papers are divided into three sections: atomic and molecular spectroscopy, solid state spectroscopy and instrumentation and technological applications. New aspects presented were both quantitative and qualitative improvements in fluorescence spectroscopy and magnetic circular dichroism measurements. The fluorescence data are complementary to those of photoemission in a sense but they appear to open up a new method to analyze the optical excitation and relaxation processes. The application of magnetic circular dichroism has proved to be useful not only in analyzing the electronic structures of magnetic materials but also in practical applications to material engineering as found in experiments combined with photoelectron microscopy. Excellent developments in applications are only found in the field of surface photochemistry, where the technique of etching using VUV light has been appreciably refined. Although the majority of distinctive scientific features in the VUV-11 Conference have been brought about by the application of synchrotron radiation, experiments using a different type of light source appear to have progressed steadily. This is evident in the studies of plasma radiation.

Book Synopsis Semi-Solid Processing of Alloys and Composites by : Shahrooz Nafisi
Download or read book Semi-Solid Processing of Alloys and Composites written by Shahrooz Nafisi and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-06-18 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Semi-solid metal (SSM) processing, as a viable alternative manufacturing route to those of conventional casting and forging, has not yet been fully exploited despite nearly half a century since its introduction to the metal industry. The slow pace of adopting SSM routes may be due to various reasons, including capital costs, profit margins, and, most importantly, the lack of detailed analysis of various SSM processes in open literature to confidently establish their advantages over more conventional routes. Therefore, the SSM community must disseminate their findings more effectively to generate increased confidence in SSM processes in the eyes of our industrial leaders. As such, we have embarked on the task to invite the leaders in SSM research to share their findings in a Special Issue dedicated to semi-solid processing of metals and composites. SSM processing takes advantage of both forming and shaping characteristics usually employed for liquid and solid materials. In the absence of shear forces, the semi-solid metal has similar characteristics to solids, i.e., easily transferred and shaped; by applying a defined force, the viscosity is reduced and the material flows like a liquid. These unique dual characteristics have made SSM routes attractive alternatives to conventional casting on an industrial scale. With the intention of taking full advantage of SSM characteristics, it is crucial to understand SSM processing, including topics such as solidification and structural evolution, flow behavior through modelling and rheology, new processes and process control, alloy development, and properties in general. This Special Issue focuses on the recent research and findings in the field with the aim of filling the gap between industry and academia, and to shed light on some of the fundamentals of science and technology of semi-solid processing.

Book Synopsis Dislocations in Solids by : Hideji Suzuki
Download or read book Dislocations in Solids written by Hideji Suzuki and published by VSP. This book was released on 1985-12 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises the Proceedings of the Yamada Conference IX on Dislocations in Solids, held in August 1984 in Tokyo. The purpose of the conference was two-fold: firstly to evaluate the increasing data on basic properties of dislocations and their interaction with other types of defects in solids and, secondly, to increase understanding of the material properties brought about by dislocation-related phenomena. Metals and alloys, semi-conductors and ions crystals were discussed. One of the important points of contention was the electronic state at the core of dislocation. Another was the dislocation model of amorphous structure.
