Book Synopsis Experimenting with Humans and Animals by : Anita Guerrini
Download or read book Experimenting with Humans and Animals written by Anita Guerrini and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2003-07-02 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethical questions about the use of animals and humans in research remain among the most vexing within both the scientific community and society at large. These often rancorous arguments have gone on, however, with little awareness of their historical antecedents. Experimentation on animals and particularly humans is often assumed to be a uniquely modern phenomenon, but the ideas and attitudes that encourage the biological and medical sciences to experiment on living creatures date from the earliest expression of Western thought. Here, Anita Guerrini looks at the history of these practices from vivisection in ancient Alexandria to present-day battles over animal rights and medical research employing human subjects. Guerrini discusses key historical episodes, including the discovery of blood circulation, the development of smallpox and polio vaccines, and recent AIDS research. She also explores the rise of the antivivisection movement in Victorian England, the modern animal rights movement, and current debates over gene therapy.--From publisher description.
Book Synopsis History of Anatomy by : R. Shane Tubbs
Download or read book History of Anatomy written by R. Shane Tubbs and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2019-02-12 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A unique biographical review of the global contributors to field of anatomy Knowledge of human anatomy has not always been an essential component of medical education and practice. Most European medical schools did not emphasize anatomy in their curricula until the post-Renaissance era; current knowledge was largely produced between the 16th and 20th centuries. Although not all cultures throughout history have viewed anatomy as fundamental to medicine, most have formed ideas about the internal and external mechanisms of the body—influences on the field of anatomy that are often overlooked by scholars and practitioners of Western medicine. History of Anatomy: An International Perspective explores the global and ancient origins of our modern-day understanding of anatomy, presenting detailed biographies of anatomists from varied cultural and historical settings. Chapters organized by geographic region, including Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, review the lives of those that helped shape our current understanding of the human form. Examining both celebrated and lesser-known figures, this comprehensive work examines their contributions to the discipline and helps readers develop a global perspective on a cornerstone of modern medicine and surgery. Offers a comprehensive and multidisciplinary examination of the history of anatomy Traces the emergence of modern knowledge of anatomy from ancient roots to the modern era Fills a gap in current literature on global perspectives on the history of anatomy Written by an internationally recognized team of practicing physicians and scholars History of Anatomy: An International Perspective is an engaging and insightful historical review written for anatomists, anthropologists, physicians, surgeons, medical personnel, medical students, health related professionals, historians, and anyone interested in the history of anatomy, surgery, and medicine.
Book Synopsis Plastic Surgery by : Riccardo F. Mazzola
Download or read book Plastic Surgery written by Riccardo F. Mazzola and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-07-02 with total page 605 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a detailed history of plastic surgery procedures and their development from the ancient world, through the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, up to World War II. The origin of plastic surgery is essentially the story of wound management – the frequent struggle that primitive man engaged in to heal his injuries. The narrative chronicles the rise and fall – and rise again – of the discipline through the centuries. It illustrates the birth of modern reconstructive and aesthetic techniques and emphasizes the ingenuity that plastic surgeons demonstrated to improve wound defects and refine facial disfigurements of various origins, congenital or acquired. In addition, the work underscores the enormous impact that the study of human anatomy had on the evolution of surgery. Chapters discuss the birth and spread of aesthetic surgery, seldom referenced in modern scientific writing. Richly illustrated with hundreds of images drawn from the personal collection of the primary author, the book is an outstanding contribution to the annals of surgery. Not only does it honor the publications and artworks that have recorded these unique achievements, it also recognizes the great innovators of the past whose reconstructive and aesthetic work forms the basis of today’s surgical successes. Plastic Surgery – An Illustrated History is a must-have resource for plastic, maxillofacial and aesthetic surgeons. Any student of surgery, medical history, or medical illustration will be interested in this work.
Book Synopsis Plasticity and Pathology by : David Bates
Download or read book Plasticity and Pathology written by David Bates and published by Fordham University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the rise of cognitive science and the revolution in neuroscience, it is now commonplace to assume that the study of a human person—a thinking, feeling, acting subject—is ultimately the study of the human brain. In both Europe and the United States, massive state-funded research is focused on mapping the brain in all its remarkable complexity. The metaphors employed are largely technological: A wiring diagram of synaptic connectivity will lead to a better understanding of human behavior and perhaps insights into the breakdown of human personhood with diseases of the brain such as Alzheimer’s. Alongside this technologized discourse of the brain as locus of human subjectivity we find another perspective, one that emphasizes its essential plasticity—in both the developmental sense and as a response to traumas such as strokes, tumors, or gunshot wounds. This collection of essays brings together a diverse range of scholars to investigate how the “neural subject” of the twenty-first century came to be. Taking approaches both historical and theoretical, they probe the possibilities and limits of neuroscientific understandings of human experience. Topics include landmark studies in the history of neuroscience, the relationship between neural and technological “pathologies,” and analyses of contemporary concepts of plasticity and pathology in cognitive neuroscience. Central to the volume is a critical examination of the relationship between pathology and plasticity. Because pathology is often the occasion for neural reorganization and adaptation, it exists not in opposition to the brain’s “normal” operation but instead as something intimately connected to our ways of being and understanding.
Book Synopsis The Oxford Handbook of Generality in Mathematics and the Sciences by : Karine Chemla
Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Generality in Mathematics and the Sciences written by Karine Chemla and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Generality is a key value in scientific discourses and practices. Throughout history, it has received a variety of meanings and of uses. This collection of original essays aims to inquire into this diversity. Through case studies taken from the history of mathematics, physics and the life sciences, the book provides evidence of different ways of understanding the general in various contexts. It aims at showing how collectives have valued generality and how they have worked with specific types of "general" entities, procedures, and arguments. The books connects history and philosophy of mathematics and the sciences at the intersection of two of the most fruitful contemporary lines of research: historical epistemology, in which values (e.g. "objectivity", "accuracy") are studied from a historical viewpoint; and the philosophy of scientific practice, in which conceptual developments are seen as embedded in networks of social, instrumental, and textual practices. Each chapter provides a self-contained case-study, with a clear exposition of the scientific content at stake. The collection covers a wide range of scientific domains - with an emphasis on mathematics - and historical periods. It thus allows a comparative perspective which suggests a non-linear pattern for a history of generality. The introductory chapter spells out the key issues and points to the connections between the chapters.
Download or read book Frankenstein written by Mary Shelley and published by Hackett Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-16 with total page 379 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In this new edition of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, David Wootton's Introduction gives the reader both a clear and gripping account of the biographical circumstances that led to the novel’s writing and the most striking and original interpretations of its central themes and of the intellectual and cultural influences on them. Offering a new account of the complex history of its composition, and drawing upon his deep knowledge of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century scientific debates, Wootton reveals the ways in which the origins of Shelley’s novel are inextricably linked to conceptions of the origins of life itself. We have here a transformative reading of one of the world’s best-known stories." —Laura Marcus, Goldsmiths’ Professor of English Literature and Fellow of New College, University of Oxford
