Book excerpt: Excerpt from The ABC of the X Rays The following pages have been written with a view of offering some assistance to two classes of readers, namely, those who desire to add to their stock of general information, and others who wish to pursue for themselves a line of investigation and experiment in the fascinating domain of the mysterious X rays. Many of those who will desire to make a special study of the subject or make practical use of Prof. Roentgen's discovery will probably have had no occasion to acquire any special knowledge of electrical matters, and will, therefore, be at a loss to know what apparatus is needed, having due regard to the conditions by which they are surrounded. The aim has been, therefore, to make all explanations as full as possible and as simple as is consistent with statements of technical matters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of X-Ray Technic This short manual on the technic of X-ray examination has been prepared with a view to the needs of the medical service of the United States Army. The small number of medical officers in the service necessitates frequent change of station, so that it often becomes necessary for one to familiarize himself in a comparatively short time with the essentials of radiologic technic. With this in mind it has been the author's aim to limit this work to the absolute essentials, a knowledge of which will enable the operator to do satisfactory work in X-ray diagnosis. The book may also be found useful by that increasingly large number of physicians and surgeons in private practice who find it necessary or expedient to do their own X-ray work for diagnosis. Resort to a specialist in radiology is earnestly recommended whenever such services can be obtained, but in the smaller cities and towns this is often impossible. It is believed that mastery of the facts contained in this manual will enable those so situated to do satisfactory radiography. In the preparation of this book many of the larger text-books and many monographs have been freely drawn upon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from X-Rays Simply Explained: A Handbook on Rontgen Rays in Theory and Practice IN preparing the third edition of this handbook I have endeavoured to give a concise account of some of the experiments and discoveries which have led up to the present knowledge of Rontgen rays and their application to pathology. It is intended primarily for students and amateurs, and gives no account of the more complicated and expensive apparatus, nor of the latest developments in hospital methods, but I hope that it may also be of some use to the practical man, as it seems to have been in its earlier form. The original intention was to write a second book in continuation and completion of the first edition, but it has proved more convenient to revise and condense the previous chapters sufficiently to allow the inclusion of the whole in its former small compass. It is hoped that this course will prove equally satisfactory to new readers and exist ing owners of the first edition, as no matter of any importance contained therein is omitted here and much that is new has been added. The history and theory of the subject can only be lightly sketched, but I have endeavoured to treat them in such a way as to awaken interest which will carry the reader beyond the mere mechanical production of radiographs as curiosities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Radiography and the 'X' Rays: In Practice and Theory With Constructional and Manipulatory Details IN the following pages, an attempt has been made to give a clear and trustworthy account of the steps that have led up to the discovery and application of those electric waves that are now known as X rays. Every care has been taken to treat the subject with lucidity and accuracy, and to this end nearly every one of the statements made has been verified by personal experiment. Where this has been impossible of execution, the source of the statement, or the name of the experimenter, has been given. Considerable prominence has been given to con structional details and measurements, with the view of facilitating the student in making the apparatus necessary. No sensational matter, or far-fetched applications of radiography, insufficiently confirmed, have been admitted into this work but full and at the same time clear explanations have been given, which, it is hoped, will render the subject easy of comprehension. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Radiography: A Hand-Book of the Applications of the X-Rays As is well known, any ordinary source of electricity, whether a battery, dynamo, friction machine, or what not, has two poles or terminals, relatively described as positive and negative. If these are connected by means of a wire we form what is known as a circuit; and when the battery (etc.) is in action a current of electricity passes along the wire. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Radiography: A Handbook for Physicians, Surgeons, and Other Users of X-Rays The first edition of this book, - the earliest handbook of radiography in any language, - was issued in May of 1896, when the subject was less than six months old. In 1898 the subject had so far grown in importance that a second edition, entirely re-written, seemed necessary. In this winter, 1901-2, when radiography is recognized as a most valuable aid to the physician and surgeon, when its methods have become relatively permanent, and its apparatus and materials are fairly perfect, a third edition, much larger and more important than the others, seems necessary. In introducing it the authors wish to acknowledge most gratefully the assistance which has been so cheerfully given to them by radiographers in many parts of the world, but especially by the members of The Rontgen Society and its secretary. They have also to acknowledge the kindness of many firms and friends in placing electros of their apparatus at their disposal. Among others may be mentioned Baird & Tatlock; A. F. Cossor; Harry Cox, Limited; A. E. Deane of London; T. Ernecke, Berlin; A. W. Hirschmann, Berlin; Max Kohl, Chemnitz; Newton & Co.; Rebman & Co.; The India Rubber Works Co.; and James Wimshurst. Book excerpt: Excerpt from X-Rays in Diagnosis In using the X-rays for purposes of diagnosis, it Should be a rule that no definite conclusion is to be based upon a single exposure, or set of exposures, excepting in the most obvious cases, and even in such it is wise to observe this law. The results of the first exposures should always be corro borated, or the reverse, by check exposures, made after an interval of a day or two, in order to avoid the liability to the repetition of errors, which might occur, if the check exposure were made at the same sitting as the first. There is no doubt that serious errors, in diagnosis and treatment, are often made by the neglect of this common-sense rule. The dictates of ordinary prudence would Seem to render this impossible, but it is nevertheless a fact that they frequently do not do so. The only excuse for acting upon a single exposure is either extreme urgency, or some combination of circum stances which renders it impracticable to obtain a check experiment. The following is a case in point. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Systematic Development of X-Ray Plates and Films This book has been written in the hope that it will throw some needed light upon a much neglected branch of radiographv. Little has been written upon the pho tographic phase of radiography, and the few pages that have appeared are antiquated. It is a fact that few radiographers pay sufficient attention to the develop ment of the X-ray film or plate, and even manv of the so-called experts produce pictures which, considered from a purely photographic point of view, can be classed only as amateurish. The radiographer should be just as painstaking in the development of his pictures as the professional photographer, and unless he is willing to adopt a method which will eliminate the element. Of chance, he can never hope for uniformity of results. In preparing this book I have at all times kept in mind the fact that the book will be largely read bv the assistant, who, perhaps, lacks a technical education. The book has therefore been made as nontechnical as possi ble, and even the lavman can read it with understanding.
