Book excerpt: Stress levels were measured in the vicinity of a crack tip using an x-ray diffraction technique to determine the correlation of these measurements with crack closure and residual stress theories. A single tensile overload was applied to a modified compact specimen of 1020 steel. The material had been heat-treated to obtain an ASTM grain size of 10 to 11 and a yield strength of 70 ksi. Crack tip residual stresses were measured in the unloaded condition and crack tip applied stresses were measured under load. These measurements were made as the crack was extended into and past the overload affected zone. Results suggested that overload retardation was primarily due to residual compressive stresses generated at the point of overload. It was observed that the effect of the overload had dissipated by the time the crack was propagated through a distance approximately equal to the plastic zone caused by the overload.

Book excerpt: To ensure the structural integrity of present day structures subjected to variable amplitude cyclic stress histories, a knowledge of the crack tip stress field is important. In this investigation, crack tip stresses were measured in specimens of 1020 and 1045 steel using a semi-automatic x-ray diffraction technique. Crack tip residual stresses were measured in the unloaded condition and crack tip 'applied' stresses were measured under load. It was observed that, for the alloys tested and within the confines of stress analysis by x-ray diffraction, a dependence exists for the maximum crack tip residual stress on the level of the previous stress intensity factor and also for the maximum crack tip 'applied' stress on the level of the applied stress intensity. This is in sharp contrast to theoretical models of the crack tip stress fields which predict an independence between crack tip stresses and stress intensity levels. Crack tip stresses were observed relative to the fatigue crack growth retardation process. Post overload crack tip stresses were greatly reduced from their pre-overload levels. Limited studies indicated that crack growth, after an overload, had little or no effect on the overload-induced crack tip residual stress distribution. Measurements taken at applied loads, indicated that portions of the material behind the tip of the extended crack were in compression while areas ahead of the extended crack were in tension. These results were considered in light of possible retardation mechanisms.

Book excerpt: Crack-tip stress distributions were measured on the surface of fatigue-cracked specimens of 1045 steel using a semiautomatic X-ray diffraction technique. The influence of overload cycles and crack extension on crack-tip stress profiles was studied. These overload-influenced stress profiles were observed to follow current analytical models generally. Overload cycles were shown to have a strong effect on subsequent residual and applied stress profiles. It was deduced that overload-induced crack-tip residual stresses are tensile on the interior of the specimen, the implication being that crack growth retardation may thus be a surface related phenomenon. Crack tip applied stresses were also measured and were found to be consistent with simple models for the crack tip applied stress profile.

Book excerpt: Fatigue crack growth rate changes caused by single overloads and an overload followed by an underload have been studied in the high-strength aluminum alloy 7091. Crack-tip plasticity parameters were measured at each step in the loading sequence using the stereoimaging technique. Effective stress-intensity factor was measured with high resolution immediately at the crack tip both before an overload and during the subsequent growth rate retardation period. Crack-tip opening displacement and strain were altered in the same way as growth rate following the overload/underload events, and similitude with respect to crack-tip plasticity was preserved during the growth retardation period. Effective stress-intensity factor was found to correlate well with crack growth rate. Strains within the plastic zone were converted to stress at each step in load change. These stresses were then summed to determine the zone of residual stress caused by the overload. The region of compressive residual stress ahead of the crack tip was found to increase with overload severity but was limited to yield stress in magnitude. An underload shrank the spatial extent of the residual stresses caused by the overload.
