Book excerpt: annotations This book is unique because it contains: -a literary criticism when analyzing and reading the entire book elaborated by Lina MedinaLiterary criticism of the book: Wuthering HeightsPersonally, a book seems considerable to me from the moment it raises intense and enjoyable emotions inside the soul of the reader. If we evaluate the quality of books, based on the intensity of these emotions, just for that reason, Wuthering Heights (Wuthering Heights) would immediately fit like the masterpiece that is considered worldwide. For some reason, the title "Wuthering Heights," as well as others such as "Gone with the Wind" or "Breakfast at Tiffany's" always, since I was very young, blew my mind, even before I knew what it was. Today I know that it is because he has had a lot of fame and success in both literature and cinema, however, before reading the book he knew very little about him. The only thing I knew, or the only thing that sounded to me thanks to tiny comments that some people had released to the air, was that it seemed to be a romance story. When they told me that I would have to read it in a reduced version for the University, I did not feel more enthusiastic. I mentioned it to a couple of adults, and they all seemed to place "Wuthering Heights" in the same way that I did: as a classic love story, yes, but with nothing to remember that distinguished it from any romance and very corny.Only a very dear friend read Wuthering Heights before me, and tried to enthuse me. Even she also wrote a review, very well written by the way. But even then there was no case.Only when I read the book, even superficially because it was a grossly reduced version, I was able to realize its genius. And it is that you do not need more background, or greater literary knowledge, or more analysis to immediately fall victim to this novel. There is something I would like to make very clear: Wuthering Heights is far, far from being a conventional love story. The reduced version I liked so much, and to be reduced it produced so many sensations in my interior, that I decided to read the complete and original version, or I could never feel that I could comment on it properly. And it was worth it.Wuthering Heights is a book that can be enjoyed absolutely from any angle: superficially, it is entertaining, captivating, mysterious, brutal. And if you start to dig a little, its structure is so, but so perfect that it overwhelms me even try to explain it; For the first time I understand how there are so many books that are devoted to analyzing this work.

Book excerpt: In the winter of 1801, our narrator, Lockwood, shows up at Wuthering Heights to make arrangements with Heathcliff to rent the nearby manor, Thrushcross Grange. (These names are insane, we know.) Heathcliff, the landlord, makes no effort to be pleasant (read: he's a Gloomy Gus) and immediately becomes a source of deep curiosity to Lockwood. A snowstorm forces Lockwood to spend the night at Wuthering Heights, and he has crazy nightmares complete with a wailing ghost named Catherine Linton trying to come through the window. Cheery!Settled into his new house, Lockwood invites the housekeeper, Ellen "Nelly" Dean, to tell the story of the curious inhabitants of Wuthering Heights. Nelly is all too happy to recount the dark tale of the Earnshaws, the Lintons, and, mostly, Heathcliff. We jump into the past as Nelly recounts the story. Nelly starts to work for the Earnshaws as a young girl. Everything is fine until Mr. Earnshaw takes a trip to Liverpool and returns with a swarthy little orphan child named Heathcliff. Though Earnshaw's daughter, Catherine, takes to the boy after only some initial aversion, the son, Hindley, resents his father's favoritism of the strange, mannerless boy.Soon Catherine and Heathcliff are inseparable, but Hindley's bitterness has only grown, so he goes off to college. Catherine and Heathcliff briefly enjoy a sort of idyllic, adventurous childhood out on the stormy moors and snuggling in the oak-paneled bed. When Mr. Earnshaw dies, Hindley returns from college, with his new wife Frances, to claim his place as master of Wuthering Heights. College hasn't altered Hindley's feelings toward Heathcliff, so he decides to make life miserable for his adopted brother by treating him like a servant. With Hindley acting the tyrant, Catherine provides Heathcliff's only solace. They remain allies and friends. One night Heathcliff and Catherine ramble down to Thrushcross Grange to spy on the Linton children, Edgar and Isabella, who live a pampered and protected existence. When a dog bites Catherine, she is forced to stay at the Grange for five weeks to recuperate. While there, she captures the affections of young Edgar. Back at Wuthering Heights, life without Catherine has been miserable for Heathcliff, but with Edgar in the picture things will never be the same.Frances dies after giving birth to a son, Hareton. Without his wife to help tone down his rage, Hindley becomes even more vengeful toward Heathcliff. Hindley resents his new son, and he becomes an abusive alcoholic. His primary activity is making life miserable for Heathcliff and, as a consequence, for everyone else in the house.

Book excerpt: You know the sayings: love conquers all. All you need is love. Love is many splendored thing. How about this one: love is incestuous, psychologically damaging, manipulative, violent, digs up your corpse when you die, and wants to be haunted by your ghost forever and ever?It may not be the sentiment on most Valentines Day cards, but it sure is the pervasive opinion on l'amour in Wuthering Heights. Does that sound like kind of a horrific idea of love to you? We have bad news for you-you're almost totally alone in thinking that. Wuthering Heights, and its warped idea of true love, is often voted the #1 Greatest Love Story.Wuthering Heights, published in 1847, revolves around the passionate and destructive love between its two central characters, Emily Brontë's headstrong and beautiful Catherine Earnshaw and her tall, dark, handsome, and brooding hero/devil, Heathcliff.Forget the romantic candlelit dinners, the wine, and the roses. Catherine and Heathcliff's love exists on an entirely different plane: one that involves ghosts, corpses, the communion (or possession) of souls, and revenge. And, speaking of revenge, Heathcliff-who harbors more than one grudge against his adoptive family, the love of his life, and his neighbors-manages to make every revenge drama look like kids' play.Though Wuthering Heights is considered a classic, the book wasn't always so popular. In fact, when it first came out there was all sorts of confusion about the author, because Brontë published the book under the pseudonym Ellis Bell. Readers thought the book was by the same author who wrote Jane Eyre (which was more immediately embraced by the public because the characters are a lot more likable). Turns out, Emily's sister Charlotte wrote Jane Eyre... under the pseudonym Currer Bell.To set the record straight, Charlotte wrote the preface to the 1850 edition of Wuthering Heights and also took the opportunity to address some of the bad press the book had received. Critics basically thought the book was a downer and some even characterized it as immoral.Um. We don't usually agree with critics from the 1850's but they were half right. This book is a downer. Heathcliff is amoral. But that doesn't keep the love story in Wuthering Heights from being one of the most passionate love stories ever told-or one of the most often-adapted. Sure, its idea of love is psychotic. Sure, it's uber-unhealthy. Sure, it makes "Blank Space" look like a really level-headed approach to eros. But that's the point. Sometimes "madly in love" means just that: that love has rendered you literally mad. Sometimes it ain't healthy. It's not a good idea. But all-consuming, stay-up-all-night, hurts-worse-than-a-root-canal love is real-and Emily Brontë's novel tells it like it is.Welcome to Wuthering Heights, where love will tear you apart, follow you every step you take, and come in like a wrecking ball.

Book excerpt: Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte. Perhaps the most haunting and tormented love story ever written, Wuthering Heights is the tale of the troubled orphan Heathcliff and his doomed love for Catherine Earnshaw.Published in 1847, the year before Emily Bronte's death at the age of thirty, Wuthering Heights has proved to be one of the nineteenth century's most popular yet disturbing masterpieces. The windswept moors are the unforgettable setting of this tale of the love between the foundling Heathcliff and his wealthy benefactor's daughter, Catherine. Through Catherine's betrayal of Heathcliff and his bitter vengeance, their mythic passion haunts the next generation even after their deaths. Incorporating elements of many genres-from gothic novels and ghost stories to poetic allegory-and transcending them all, Wuthering Heights is a mystifying and powerful tour de force.
