Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner, CCCC Outstanding Book Award Until recently, American composition scholars have studied writing instruction mainly within the borders of their own nation, rarely considering English composition in the global context in which writing in English is increasingly taught. Writing in the Devil’s Tongue challenges this anachronistic approach by examining the history of English composition instruction in an East Asian country. Author Xiaoye You offers scholars a chance to observe how a nation changed from monolingual writing practices to bilingual writing instruction in a school setting. You makes extensive use of archival sources to help trace bilingual writing instruction in China back to 1862, when English was first taught in government schools. Treating the Chinese pursuit of modernity as the overarching theme, he explores how the entry of Anglo-American rhetoric and composition challenged and altered the traditional monolithic practice of teaching Chinese writing in the Confucian spirit. The author focuses on four aspects of this history: the Chinese negotiation with Anglo-American rhetoric, their search for innovative approaches to instruction, students’ situated use of English writing, and local scholarship in English composition. Unlike previous composition histories, which have tended to focus on institutional, disciplinary, and pedagogical issues, Writing in the Devil’s Tongue brings students back to center stage by featuring several passages written by them in each chapter. These passages not only showcase rhetorical and linguistic features of their writings but also serve as representative anecdotes that reveal the complex ways in which students, responding to their situations, performed multivalent, intercultural discourses. In addition, You moves out of the classroom and into the historical, cultural, and political contexts that shaped both Chinese writing and composing practices and the pedagogies that were adopted to teach English to Chinese in China. Teachers, students, and scholars reading this book will learn a great deal about the political and cultural impact that teaching English composition has had in China and about the ways in which Chinese writing and composition continues to be shaped by rich and diverse cultural traditions and political discourses. In showcasing the Chinese struggle with teaching and practicing bilingual composition, Writing in the Devil’s Tongue alerts American writing scholars and teachers to an outdated English monolingual mentality and urges them to modify their rhetorical assumptions, pedagogical approaches, and writing practices in the age of globalization.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Written and Spoken English, Vol. 1: A Course in Composition and Rhetoric Part II is a carefully organized summary of illustrated rules in punctuation, capitalization, sentence structure, and diction, intended for daily reference. A Key to these rules is given on pages 288 - 291 to aid the teacher in mark ing themes, and the method is illustrated on page 287. The teacher will place a rule number on the pupil's theme opposite an error. The pupil will study the rule and then correct his theme, thus learning the principle in the most practical way. Learn to do by doing well is the message this book has for the pupil. The author is convinced that careless theme writing does the pupil more harm than good, and that the habitual use of improper diction or incorrect sentence construction in classroom exercises often fixes bad habits so thoroughly in the mind of the pupil that they remain with him through life. Throughout the book, therefore, he correlates composition work with grammatical and rhetorical theory, and at all times he insists that the pupil write the themes carefully and neatly and then correct the errors after the teacher has indicated where they are. Book excerpt: Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) are the model for integrating advanced information technology, data communication transmission technology, electronic sensing technology, control technology and computer technology into a comprehensive ground traffic management system. They are the direction of development for future transportation systems. This book presents the proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Information Technology and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITITS 2018), held in Xi’an, China, on 15-16 September 2018. The conference provides a platform for professionals and researchers from industry and academia to present and discuss recent advances in the field of information technology and intelligent transportation systems. Intelligent transport systems vary in the technologies they apply, from basic management systems to more application-based systems. Information technology – including wireless communication, computational technologies, floating car data/floating cellular data, sensor technologies, and video vehicle detection – is also intrinsic to intelligent transportation systems. All papers were reviewed by 3-4 referees, and the program chairs of the conference committee made their selections based on the score of each paper. This year, ITITS 2018 received more than 168 papers from 4 countries, of which 41 papers were accepted. Offering a state-of-the-art overview of the theoretical and applied topics related to ITS, this book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

In their search for the basic units of spoken language the authors of this volume opt for a corpus-driven approach. They share a strong conviction that prosodic structure is essential for the study of spoken discourse and each bring their own theoretical and practical experience to the table. In the first part of the book they segment spoken material from a range of different languages (Russian, Hebrew, Central Pomo (an indigenous language from California), French, Japanese, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese). In the second part of the book each author analyzes the same two spoken English samples, but looking at them from different perspectives, using different methods of analysis as reflected in their respective analyses in Part I. This approach allows for common tendencies of segmentation to emerge, both prosodic and segmental.

Based on two corpora compiled using data from sociological and anthropological studies of Victorian London and 1930s Bolton, the author shows how historical spoken corpora can illuminate the nature of spoken language as well as the attitudes, values and behaviour of the specific community represented in a corpus. This book: demonstrates how spoken language can be examined using material collected before the advent of sophisticated recording equipment and large-scale computerised corpora; shows how other written sources such as diaries, letters and existing historical corpora can be used to analyse informal language use as far back as the fifteenth century; provides insight into the longevity and resilience of many spoken language features which are often regarded as vernacular or non-standard; comes with a companion website which gives full access to the Bolton Worktown Corpus. Historical Research on Spoken Language is key reading for researchers and students working in relevant areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theme of this collection is a discussion of the notions of 'norms' and 'standards', which are studied from various different angles, but always in relation to the English language. These terms are to be understood in a very wide sense, allowing discussions of topics such as the norms we orient to in social interaction, the benchmark employed in teaching, or the development of English dialects and varieties over time and space and their relation to the standard language. The collection is organized into three parts, each of which covers an important research field for the study of norms and standards. Part 1 is entitled "English over time and space" and is further divided into three thematic subgroups: standard and non-standard features in English varieties and dialects; research on English standardization processes; and issues of standards and norms in oral production. Part 2 deals with "English usage in non-native contexts," and Part 3 is dedicated to "Issues on politeness and impoliteness." The notions of standards and norms are equally important concepts for historical linguists, sociolinguists with a variationist background, applied linguists, pragmaticians, and discourse analysts.
