Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition: Oral and Written This book is an adaptation of my Writing and Speaking to more rapid use by more advanced students. Both the order and the proportions have been changed; parts have been re-cast; many of the exercises have been modified or made over; and the whole has been reduced in size by about a third. Otherwise the two books are substantially the same. The chapters on description and narration and other parts most closely related to the study of literature have been changed least, since the adaptation demanded in these cases is rather of themes than of text. I hope the book in this form will serve those colleges who wish more detailed review of elementary applications, and less detailed study of style, than are found in my College Manual of Rhetoric. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Informal Oral Composition Without question, conversation bears a close re semblance to the informal consecutive talk under dis ensaiou here. However, they are not one and the same. In conversation the person speaking may be interrupted by others present, or he may stop to listen to what some one else is saying. The conversational talk is not unified; it is varied by what others may think and say. The oral composition is uninterrupted, unified. In other words, a listener gains from it an impression of a complete treatment of one topic by one person. It is more distinct as to its beginning, its development, and its conclusion than is the con versation. Yet it is a perfectly easy and natural mode of oral expression, lying between formal public speaking on the one hand and casual conversation on the other. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oral Exercises in English Composition That English composition in its earliest stages can be better taught by oral than by written exercises is an impression that for some time past has been gaining ground in educational circles. It is hoped, therefore, that an elementary text-book, prepared as this has been on an oral basis, will not be deemed superfluous. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Standards in English a Course of Study in Oral and Written Composition for Elementary Schools The beginning of this investigation (to discover a standard for the elementary schools) was made from a negative viewpoint. Following a conference with the teachers of freshman English, in which the purpose of the investigation was talked over at length, a questionnaire was sent to them. They were asked to state very concretely the important weaknesses found most conspicuously on freshman papers. They understood that they were to set down those weaknesses which, by their very nature, branded an English paper as unsatisfactory from the point of view of a teacher of freshman English. Conversely, of course, it followed that the absence of the weaknesses set down would mean work satisfactory from the same viewpoint. Our aim is not to train writers in the finer graces Of language. That accomplishment depends upon the individual student and lies beyond our power. We shall be content if those who come to our book may receive a fresh desire to use with greater precision the simple English speech which is our priceless heritage. We have tried to keep this book free from the technical word and phrase, because we are persuaded that good Writing depends upon the simple essentials. Therefore, the main stress has been placed upon the word, sentence, and paragraph. Remembering, then, that the plastic mind of the young student is before us, with experiences and likings peculiar to him, we have tried to furnish that mind with clear and simple directions, with examples chosen from good writers, and exercises which will test the student's understanding of the principles of writing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effective Expression: A Textbook on Composition and Rhetoric for the Four Years of High School and the First Year of College We trust we have made the book self-explanatory. We have emphasized getting ready to write in an introductory chapter, for it is the best approach to the subject; we have treated the fundamental prin ciples and the rhetorical qualities, vitally, for too often they have been but empty words; we have shown the philosophy of the paragraph and the topic-sentence, together with the relation of the topic-sentence to the method of development, for the paragraph is the unit of the composition, and mastery of it goes far toward mastery of the whole subject. We have corrected the popular conception that rhetoric is flowery writing by showing that it is the art of effective writing; we have shown that diction, grammar, the use of figures of speech, and the study of poetry are essential for all who would so handle pure, crude facts, the raw material, as to make the finished product effective. We have shown that oral composition is best treated along with written composition and that such a method both saves time and increases efficiency. The chapter on The Finished Product reveals the importance of bringing the knowledge of literature to bear upon our writing, and shows how and what to read until one has formed his own taste and needs less guidance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teacher's Manual for Language Lessons: Combining Oral Exercises and Written Composition In the revision of "First Lessons in Language and Composition" we have been prompted by the desire to make the work still more acceptable. Believing it unjust to compel the pupils to purchase, and unwise to put into their hands, the suggestions and models designed only for the teacher; and convinced that the first plan of our work demanded of the teacher too much labor in getting the matter before the child, we have rearranged the whole. We now present a separate book (Language Lessons) for the child, and this Manual, which includes the Language Lessons, as a handbook for the teacher, hoping to serve the interests of both. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Composition in the High School, the First and Second Years This bulletin confesses to an extremely restricted and definite aim. It is designed to be of some service, however slight, to those teachers in the State of Wisconsin, who through lack of experience, or the pressure of too numerous duties, have felt the need of some specific suggestions as to the matter and the method to be used in conducting the work in English composition, during the first and second high school years. What is said here applies particularly to the work in the smaller high schools, since it is in such schools that the instructors in English are laboring under the greatest difficulties. The suggestions given have been worked out in several classes, under the actual conditions that exist in the average high school; they are, therefore, the product, not of theorizing, but of an effort to make of first and second-year composition something both agreeable and profitable. If it appears that undue emphasis has been given to the idea of rendering the course agreeable, this condition has its origin in a firm belief that it is only by consulting the everyday interests of the pupils, and creating in the class the notion that self-expression is a natural and pleasant thing, that the best results can be obtained. While stress may, on occasion, be very properly laid on the ultimate advantages of composition for the practical purposes of life, it cannot be expected that these remote considerations will appeal to the average freshman or sophomore; the surer way of progress is to win the student's sympathy and interest in the work for its own sake. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Progressive Composition Lessons, Vol. 1: Third and Fourth Years In the lower grades teachers have been confused by the wealth of material, both in composition and in lan guage work, that is presented in the text-books. In the upper grades teachers have experienced great difficulty in getting models of true literary excellence which appeal to the pupils. In order to assist in these two particulars The Progressive Composition Lessons have been pre pared. Each lesson has grown out of classroom work covering a number of years; and no lesson has been included that has not stood the test of actual classroom experience. The aim has been to give the child power to express him self readily and clearly. The method is essentially inductive. Each week's work consists of three lessons. In general these lessons are divided into: I. The preparatory oral work, which must be thorough; II. The written composition; III. The cor rection exercise, which affords the teacher and the pupils opportunity to correct expression. The illustrative compositions in the Appendix of the teachers' edition have been taken directly from pupils' work. Grateful acknowledgments are made to the teachers of Public School No. 184, Manhattan, for the intelligent and helpful assistance rendered by them in the development of the lessons. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical English Composition It is the purpose of this book to accomplish four things for the student: (1) to give him continually increasing power in original composition; (2) to train him in habits of accuracy in mechanical form (spelling, punctuation, sentence structure, etc.); (3) to develop his interest in good literature; and (4) to stimulate his interest in the affairs of the world in which he lives. From the beginning of the book to the end, students are required to do creative work and are trained to select, arrange, and express ideas so as to make the best use of what they know. The method of teaching is inductive. Models are used in such a way as to encourage and to develop original thought and expression. No blind imitation of models is possible if the method of the book is followed. This requires persistent effort along definitely indicated lines. Beginning with very simple work, the exercises gradually increase in difficulty in both subject matter and technical requirement. The assignments for student practice are varied and very extensive, ranging from the practical to the theoretical, from matters of everyday experience to matters of imagination and fancy. The subjects assigned have been taken almost entirely from lists made out by students when asked to hand in subjects in which they were interested and on which they would like to write. Necessarily, these subjects touch all phases of the lives of young people. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oral and Written English: Primary Book How shall we displace with natural, correct, and pointed written expression the lifeless school composition of the past, the laborious production of which was of exceedingly doubtful educational value and gave pleasure neither to child nor to teacher? These are some of the questions to which this textbook aims to give constructive answers. Needless to say, much more is required in the way of answer than a supply of raw material for language work or a graded sequence of formal lessons in primary English. It is the purpose of the present book to provide a series of schoolroom situations, so built up as to give pupils delightful experiences in speaking and writing good English. Since one can no more teach without the interest of the pupil than see with out light, these situations have for their content the natural inter ests of children. They therefore include child life and the heroic aspects of mature life, fairies and fairyland, and the outer world.
