Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to include Thomas Jefferson?s writings and writings about him?from his era and ours. This Norton Critical Edition seeks to give readers a full understanding of Thomas Jefferson?s importance to the intellectual development of the United States, particularly in political theory and scientific learning; of Jefferson?s role in the expansion of the territory and sovereignty of the United States; and of Jefferson?s controversial relation to slavery and race as key issues in American history. The editor has selected Jefferson?s most important published texts?A Summary View of the Rights of British America, the Declaration of Independence, and Notes on the State of Virginia?along with An Appendix to the Notes on Virginia Relative to the Murder of Logan?s Family and his Message to Congress on the Lewis and Clark Expedition. In addition, more than one hundred of Jefferson?s letters (1760?1826) have been judiciously selected from his rich body of correspondence, allowing readers to see Jefferson as a person as well as a public figure. All texts are accompanied by detailed explanatory annotations. ?Contexts? reprints contemporary documents that place Jefferson and his writings within the early American Republic, including works by Thomas Paine, John Adams, François-Jean de Beauvoir, and Luther Martin. Also included are diverse and early responses to Jefferson and his writings by, among others, John Quincy Adams, William Cullen Bryant, Washington Irving, James Fenimore Cooper, and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. "Criticism" provides representative works of modern interpretation and analysis that confirm Jefferson's continuing relevance. Included are twelve thought-provoking assessments from several disciplinary perspectives by, among others, Annette Gordon Reed, Peter Onuf, and Douglas L. Wilson. A Selected Bibliography is also included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The letters of a person . . . form the only full and genuine journal of his life, noted Thomas Jefferson, who wrote nearly 20,000 letters in his own lifetime. Andrew Burstein invites readers to rediscover Jefferson through an exploration of his most enduring public and private writings. Among the public documents examined are two of Jefferson's best-known contributions to American history, the Declaration of Independence and his first inaugural address. On a more personal level, we read the written dialogue between Jefferson and his dying wife, Martha, as well as tender letters written to his daughters and grandson. Also included are thought-provoking letters written to friends and fellow thinkers, highlighted by extracts from the famous correspondence between the aging Jefferson and John Adams. Burstein's lively analysis confirms Jefferson as a writer of both style and substance. In his letters, we see a writer whose words at once convey the eighteenth-century world in which he lived and yet still speak to the modern world with powerful relevance and wisdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Jefferson aspired beyond the ambition of a nationality, and embraced in his view the whole future of man.”—Henry Adams Thomas Jefferson (1743–1826) left a vast literary legacy in the form of journal entries, notes, addresses, and seventy thousand letters. This extraordinary volume represents many of his most important contributions to American political thought. It features his Autobiography, which contains the original and revised versions of the Declaration of Independence; the Anas, or Notes (1791–1809); Biographical Sketches; selections from Notes on the State of Virginia, the Travel Journals, and Essay on Anglo-Saxon; a portion of his public papers, including his first and second inaugural addresses; and more than two hundred letters. Taken together, these writings offer indispensable insight into the mind of the man who was instrumental in formulating and guiding this nation’s principles. From the Preface: This selection from the writings of Thomas Jefferson is planned to be a comprehensive presentation of his thought. The greatest amount of space has been allotted to his letters, in the belief that they are of primary importance in revealing the man and his intellect. Jefferson’s two original full-length works, the Notes on Virginia and the Autobiography, are given virtually complete. Along with his best-known public papers, selections from his minor writings are also included. Together, all these serve to depict the man who more aptly than any of his countrymen might be called the American Leonardo.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with the famous opening to the Declaration of Independence ("When in the course of human events..."), almost all of Thomas Jefferson's writings include creative, stylistically and philosophically complex references to time and history. Although best known for his "forward-looking" statements envisioning future progress, Jefferson was in fact deeply concerned with the problem of coming to terms with the impending loss or fragmentation of the past. As Hannah Spahn shows in Thomas Jefferson, Time, and History, his efforts to promote an exceptionalist interpretation of the United States as the first nation to escape from the "crimes and calamities" of European history were complicated both by his doubts about the outcome of the American experiment and by his skepticism about the methods and morals of eighteenth-century philosophical history. Spahn approaches the conundrum of Jefferson's Janus-faced, equally forward- and backward-oriented thought by discussing it less as a matter of personal contradiction and paradox than as the expression of a late Newtonian Enlightenment, in a period between ancient and modern modes of explaining change in time. She follows Jefferson in his creation of an influential narrative of American and global history over the course of half a century, opening avenues into a temporal and historical imagination that was different from ours, and offering new assessments of the solutions Jefferson and his generation found (or failed to find) to central moral and political problems like slavery.

There is no shortage of words to describe America's third president and true Renaissance man, Thomas Jefferson. As the author of the Declaration of Independence, he stands at the heart of the American experiment; his writings and ideas mark him as a draftsman of the American experience. Now, in The Wisdom of Thomas Jefferson, this powerful advocate of liberty comes to life through his own eloquent words. Here is the Thomas Jefferson who oversaw the Louisiana Purchase and the Lewis/Clark exploration, established diplomatic relations with Great Britain, prohibited the importation of slaves, and grappled with his own contested election to the presidency. Here, too, is the gifted scholar and architect, a man who advanced the education of America by founding the University of Virginia while also designing and building his renowned plantation, Monticello. Drawing upon Jefferson's prolific body of letters and writings, this revealing book chronicles the birth and infancy of our democracy and provides fascinating insight into Jefferson's relationships with such historical luminaries as George Washington, James Madison, and his rival and colleague John Adams. Provocative and inspiring, challenging and informative, The Wisdom of Thomas Jefferson lets readers know this man of conviction, principle, and deep thought as someone who not only forged the spirit of our country but whose actions and ideas continue to influence us today.
