Book excerpt: Ludwig Feuerbach's departure from the traditional philosophy of Hegel opened a door for generations of radical philosophical thinkers, foremost among them the young Karl Marx. Indeed, much of early Marx is unintelligible without reference to certain fundamental Feuerbachian texts. The selections in this volume, few of them available in translation elsewhere, reveal Feuerbach's fundamental criticisms of the 'old philosophy' of Hegel and advance his own humanistic thought, grounded in life and sensuality. The reader can readily grasp the liberating influence of this unjustly neglected philosopher.

Book excerpt: Ludwig Andreas von Feuerbach (1804 - 1872) was a German anthropologist and philosopher, best known for his book The Essence of Christianity, which provided a critique of Christianity that strongly influenced generations of later thinkers, including Charles Darwin, Karl Marx, Sigmund Freud, Friedrich Engels, Richard Wagner, and Friedrich Nietzsche. An associate of Left Hegelian circles, Feuerbach advocated atheism and anthropological materialism. Many of his philosophical writings offered a critical analysis of religion. His thought was influential in the development of historical materialism, where he is often recognized as a bridge between Hegel and Marx.

Feuerbach's theme was a derivation of Hegel's speculative theology in which the Creation remains a part of the Creator, while the Creator remains greater than the Creation. In Part One, Feuerbach developed what he calls the "true or anthropological essence of religion", treating of God in his various aspects. Thus God is nothing else than man: he is, so to speak, the outward projection of man's inward nature. In Part Two he discusses the "false or theological essence of religion", i.e. the view which regards God as having a separate existence over against man._x000D_ _x000D_ _x000D_

Book excerpt: A New 2023 translation into English from the original manuscript, with an introduction, glossary of Feuerbachian terminology and a timeline of his life and works. "The Essence of Religion" is a philosophical work published in 1841 that critiques the nature and origins of religious belief, arguing for a Darwinian-historical origin for religion, and a materialistic worldview. In this work, Feuerbach argues that religion is a product of human imagination and projection, and that its true essence can only be understood by examining the human mind and its relationship to the natural world. Schopenhauer and Nietzsche both take their satirical criticism about religion from Feuerbach, and every aspect of Marxism can be found here in Marx's favorite Philosopher. Feuerbach is a critical figure in the development of not merely Marxism, but Materialistic Humanism in general. Feuerbach is critical to understanding Marx. Book excerpt: Feuerbach's 1830 work Thoughts on Death and Immortality from the Papers of a Thinker, is his first publication and an important philosophical work that examines the nature of human existence and the question of immortality. Feuerbach would be the primary influence of Marx, and all of Marx's core ideas of Alienation, Dialectal Materialism and class struggle are found in the writings of Feuerbach. Schopenhauer and Nietzsche both take their satirical distichons about religion from Feuerbach. This work is also notable for its critique of traditional religious beliefs, particularly those related to the afterlife. Feuerbach was a prominent figure in the Young Hegelian movement, which sought to challenge the dominant theological and philosophical ideas of the time. "Gedanken über Tod und Unsterblichkeit" was an important contribution to this movement, and it helped to pave the way for the development of atheistic and humanistic philosophies in the nineteenth century. Feuerbach is a critical figure in the development of not merely Marxism, but Materialistic Humanism in general. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If forced to state Feuerbach’s philosophical genealogy, one would have to say that he was son of Hegel, father of Marx, and half-brother of Comte. In his own day he had many a celebratory and many a vilifier. His philosophy has received very little direct treatment in the English language. Feuerbach’s contribution was in his writings on religion and philosophy, each of them a manifesto to humanity, telling us that the desires of men can be satisfied here below. The object of this book, first published in 1941, is twofold. It is its intention to pay humble tribute to a little understood philosopher whose stature grows with the years, and in so doing perhaps to provide a key to the question of religion and personal immortality for those who reject philosophical idealism and a personal God.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive study of German materialism in the second half of the nineteenth century is long overdue. Among contemporary historians the mere passing references to Karl Vogt, Jacob Moleschott, and Ludwig Buchner as materialists and popularizers of science are hardly sufficient, for few individuals influenced public opinion in nineteenth-century Germany more than these men. Buchner, for example, revealed his awareness of the historical significance of his Kraft und Stoff in comments made in 1872, just seventeen years after its original appearance. A philosophical book which has undergone twelve big German editions in the short span of seventeen years, which further has been issued in non-German countries and languages about fifteen to sixteen times in the same period, and whose appearance (although its author was entirely unknown up to then) has called forth an almost unprecedented storm in the press, . . . such a book can be nothing ordinary; the world-calling it enjoys at present must be justified through its wholly special characteristics or by the merits of its form and content. ' Vogt, Moleschott and Buchner explicitly held that their materialism was founded on natural science. But other materialists of the nineteenth century also laid claim to the scientific character of their own thought. It is likely that Marx and Engels would have permitted their brand of materialism to have been called scientific, provided, of course, that 'scientific' was understood in their dialectical meaning of the term. Socialism, Engels maintained, had become a science with Marx.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New 2023 translation into English from the original manuscript, with an introduction, glossary of Feuerbachian terminology and a timeline of his life and works. Here in "Grundsätze der Philosophie der Zukunft" Feuerbach argues that the future of philosophy lies in a new understanding of humanity as the center of all things and the ultimate source of meaning and value, broadly criticizing traditional Continental metaphysics (primarily Kantian and Hegelian Metaphysics), which he believes has been a dominant force in philosophy for too long. He argues that traditional metaphysics has failed to understand the true nature of reality and has instead focused on abstract concepts and ideas that have little bearing on human experience. Similar to "Preliminary Theses on the Reform of Philosophy," this work represents Feuerbach's attempt to move away from Hegelian philosophy and establish a new, sensualistic philosophy. Although he did not fully develop these principles, they introduced themes that would later be expanded upon by other thinkers. This work is heavily reflective of Kantianism, hence the title. Stalin, in his 1906 book "Anarchism or Socialism", discusses Feuerbach: "If the dialectical method originates from Hegel, then the materialist theory is a development of the materialism of Feuerbach. This is well known to anarchists, and they try to use the shortcomings of Hegel and Feuerbach in order to denigrate the dialectical materialism of Marx and Engels. With regard to Hegel and the dialectical method, we have already pointed out that such tricks of the anarchists cannot prove anything other than their own ignorance. The same must be said regarding their attacks on Feuerbach and materialist theory." Feuerbach was heavily influential on Marx, who modeled his entire religion on Feuerbach's de-mythologization of the Hegelian dialectic. Schopenhauer and Nietzsche both took their satirical criticism about religion from Feuerbach, and every aspect of Marxism can be found here in Marx's favorite Philosopher. Feuerbach is a critical figure in the development of not merely Marxism, but Materialistic Humanism in general. Feuerbach is critical to understanding Marx.

Book excerpt: A New 2023 translation into English from the original manuscript, with an introduction, glossary of Feuerbachian terminology and a timeline of his life and works. Feuerbach attempts to distance himself from Hegelian philosophy and advocates for a new, sensualistic 'philosophy of the future'. However, he fails to fully develop these principles, although they influenced subsequent philosophers like Marx, Nietzsche, Freud, and others. "Preliminary Theses on the Reform of Philosophy" is a short text published in 1842 that outlines Feuerbach's views on the state of philosophy at the time and proposes a set of principles for its reform. In this work, he argues that philosophy must be grounded in material, empirical reality and human experience, rather than abstract speculation and metaphysical presuppositions. It is largely an attempt at inverting Hegelianism. Book excerpt: A New 2023 translation into English from the original manuscript of Feuerbach's 1850 "Die Naturwissenschaft und die Revolution", with an introduction, glossary of Feuerbachian terminology and a timeline of his life and works. "Die Naturwissenschaft und die Revolution" (Natural Science and the Revolution) is a political work published in 1850 that reflects Feuerbach's views on the relationship between science and politics. In this work, Feuerbach argues that the natural sciences have the potential to bring about a revolution in society and politics, but that this revolution can only be achieved through a fundamental change in the way society is organized. Here, he heavily emphasizes education. This is a critical work in the history of political thought, and its emphasis on the role of the natural sciences in bringing about a revolution in society continues to be relevant and influential in contemporary political discourse.
