Book excerpt: The book is an exposition of life behind the glamour. It speaks on the pains the artist undergoes to create his image and more to retain the intellection. The stories are based on personal interactions that could never become public. Even if some plots trickled out it failed to arouse concern and empathy. These anecdotes underline various phases of Hindi cinema and despite all its technical superiority, it could not shrug off the system that demeans artists once they are not patronized or engaged. It has references to individuals, film families and some unsaid instances that built the concept of the book. A major portion of the book is devoted to the second rung of artists or character artists, whose contributions howsoever prodigious and impressionable have often been ignored. Cinema pandered more to the star system than its realities. A character artist remains in focus till he is there. Many names that enthused the box office charts are long erased. Rightly everything that glitters is not glamour. The book quotes instances of sham camaraderie in the film world that in reality is ruthless and operates without remorse. Yet, it continues to attract and absorb new talent and that is the peculiarity of show business.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucy and her grandfather are the focus of this poignant and warm story that teaches that wrinkles are badges of happiness rather than signs of age. Lucy asks Granddad, “Why doesn't your skin fit you? It's all crinkly,” to which he replies, “Those crinkles are called wrinkles,” each of which he got when he smiled especially big. As Lucy traces Granddad's joy-filled face, he describes his memories and shares the cause of each line—his wedding day, Lucy's mother's birth, precious moments from her childhood, and Lucy's birth, among others. Beautiful drawings recreate each thoughtful memory, and the recollections showcase an intimate bond between the two generations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare was acutely aware of our intimate struggles with aging. His dramatic characters either prosper or suffer according to their relationship with maturity, and his sonnets eloquently explore time's ravaging effects. "Wrinkled deep in time" is how the queen describes herself in Antony and Cleopatra, and at the end of King Lear, there is a tragic sense that both the king and Gloucester have acquired a wisdom they otherwise lacked at the beginning of the play. Even Juliet matures considerably before she drinks Friar Lawrence's potion, and Macbeth and his wife prematurely grow old from their murderous schemes. Drawing on historical documents and the dramatist's own complex depictions, Maurice Charney conducts an original investigation into patterns of aging in Shakespeare, exploring the fulfillment or distress of Shakespeare's characters in combination with their mental and physical decline. Comparing the characterizations of elderly kings and queens, older lovers, patriarchal men, matriarchal women, and the senex the stereotypical old man of Roman comedy with the history of life expectancy in Shakespeare's England, Charney uncovers similarities and differences between our contemporary attitudes toward aging and aging as it was understood more than four hundred years ago. From this dynamic examination, a new perspective on Shakespeare emerges, one that celebrates and deepens our knowledge of his subtler themes and characters.

Book excerpt: The Shifting World holds many wondrous mysteries and magics, but Jane finds herself unique among them in her power to touch an object and have visions. That unique ability intrigues her grandfather enough to lead them to the city of Rubris, a metropolis buried underneath an unhealthy fascination for junk. They search for an item that will activate her ability and find one in the most unlikely object, an old compass. The compass points in an unknown direction, but they quickly learn that it leads to trouble. A mysterious guild wants the compass and will do anything to have it, including killing them. Jane wants to ditch the compass, but she finds herself unable to throw away the cursed item. A deeper impulse than survival keeps her holding onto the trouble. It's a feeling that both frightens and attracts her, and she's left wondering if maybe fate is leading her to a greater destiny than she can imagine. Book excerpt: This book is written to share some experiences of a person who has survived being born as colored, graduating from high school as a Negro, working half his life in corporate America as a Black, and finally arriving at old age as an African-American. Whew! The paths through those personas have led through many precious persons lives. Their interaction with me may have seemed insignificant to them. But, I cherished each experience as part of the learning-howto-live-and-get-along-with-others life course. Even the places and spaces, the landmarks, the neighborhood haunts, the nooks and the crannies of a wonderful community mentioned in this collection of stories are highly significant in my development as a man, and a husband, a father, a grandfather. All these are cherished in my heart... in my life. I respectfully salute the West Endies. That is the area in Cincinnati bounded on the south by the Ohio River, on the north and east by the curving Central Parkway and on the west by the Western Hills Viaduct to State Avenue. Thanks for the memories. So, as you readand I feel privileged that you doplease reminisce along with me. Thanks.

Book excerpt: A telling memoir by an exciting new voice, Multicolored Memories of a Black Southern Girl explores journalist Kitty Oliver's coming of age as she makes the crossing from an all-black to a predominantly white world. Born and raised in an all-black area of Jacksonville, Florida, Oliver was one of the first African American freshmen to enter the University of Florida. Though she chronicles the strains of her transition from Jim Crow to desegregation, this book is much more than a memoir of the turbulent sixties. It is an upbeat journal of self-discovery in the aftermath of that decade, a look at one woman's coming to terms with living an integrated life in America. With humor, poignancy, and lyrical language (reminiscent at times of another Florida writer, Zora Neale Hurston), Oliver shares her passage from the "old world" to the new—an immigrant's journey indicative of the American experience. Blending past and present, she searches for roots from the Gullah or "Geechee" culture of South Carolina to the urban streets of northern Florida to the multicultural mix of South Florida's diverse ethnic cultures, serving up family stories with large helpings of southern "folktalk," food, and music along the way.

Book excerpt: A heartfelt middle grade companion to Marshfield Dreams that captures the boyhood years of twelve-year-old Ralph Fletcher in relatable episodes of everyday disappointments and triumphs. As the oldest of nine kids, Ralph was often cast as another parent to his siblings rather than as an older brother; teetering between these two conflicting roles, Ralph longed to be home alone on a sick day, but hated the emptiness of feeling left behind. He loved to play sports with his neighborhood friends but resented the skillful victories of his younger brother. Thrust into the expectations of impending adolescence, Ralph was curious about girls, but embarrassed to take part in the school square dance. This satisfying memoir offers a snapshot of those pivotal moments between grade school and high school, all while tracing the roots of Ralph Fletcher’s acclaimed storytelling. Combining aging humor with warm spirituality makes this book a winner. Our God wants us to know where we can go when aging catches up with us, and who we can for help we need in dealing with it. Humor is rampant in every chapter as it brings us closer to who we are, and mostly who we can be. Sometimes these Golden Years arent always Golden (and who said that anyway?) The reader will not only find this book humorous and lively, but spiritual as well. He or she will consider it a pleasure and a treasure to keep at hand.

Book excerpt: Provides students with a guide to human memory, its properties, theories about how it works, and how studying it can help us understand who we are and why we do the things that we do. For undergraduate and graduate courses in Human Memory. This book provides a very broad range of topics covering more territory than most books. In addition to some coverage of basic issues of human memory and cognition that are of interest to researchers in the field, the chapters also cover issues that will be relevant to students with a range of interests including those students interested in clinical, social, and developmental psychology, as well as those planning on going on to medical and law schools. The writing is aimed at talking directly to students (as opposed to talking down to them) in a clear and effective manner. Not too dense, but also not too conversational as well. This 2nd edition includes a series of exercises that allow the student to try out the concepts and principles conveyed in the chapters, or to use as the basis for exploring their own ideas.

What do you get when a gorgeous two-thousand-year-old Council member shows up at your door? A case of frenzied lust with a side of unruly bear, that’s what. When Damien calls for reinforcements, he expects a badass warrior, not a sassy redhead who tempts him every which way. But underneath he finds a woman with a heart of gold, and, crucially, his mate. Emma has never been one to bow to fate, especially when it pairs her up with one overgrown arrogant Alpha bear determined to get on her last nerve. But for her investigation, she’ll have to stay close to the delectable Damien. Very close, for danger threatens the Clan from within. Emma and Damien have to put their attraction on hold, as impossible as that is, to find the perpetrator...or the next ‘accident’ could be their last.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Korean War has been called the “forgotten war,” not as studied as World War II or Vietnam. Choi examines the collective memory of the Korean War through five discrete memory sites in the United States and South Korea, including the PBS documentary Battle for Korea, the Korean War Memorial in Salt Lake City, and the statue of General Douglas MacArthur in Incheon, South Korea. She contends that these sites are not static; rather, they are active places where countermemories of the war clash with the official state-sanctioned remembrance. Through lively and compelling analysis of these memory sites, which include two differing accounts of the No Gun Ri massacre\--contemporaneous journalism and oral histories by survivors\--Choi shows diverse narratives of the Korean War competing for dominance in acts of remembering. Embattled Memories is an important interdisciplinary work in two fields, memory studies and public history, from an understudied perspective, that of witnesses to the Korean War.
