Book excerpt: Set against the backdrop of Iran’s struggle against the rising powers of Russia and Britain, the memoirs of Mirza Riza Khan Arfa’-ed-Dowleh—otherwise known as Prince Arfa (1853–1902)—are packed with picaresque adventures as the prince tells the story of his rise from humble provincial beginnings to the heights of the Iranian state. With this translation, his incredible story is brought to life for the first time in English. Prince Arfa writes with arresting wit about the deadly intrigues of the Qajar court. Lamentingly, but resolutely, he chronicles the decline of Iran from a once great empire to an almost bankrupt, lawless state, in which social unrest is channelled and exploited by the clergy. He describes the complex interactions between Iran and Europe, including an account of Naser-od-Din Shah’s profligate visits to Britain and France; the splendor and eccentricities of the doomed Tsar Nicholas II’s court; the Tsar’s omen-laden coronation; and his own favor with the Tsarina, who would grant him concessions on matters of vital importance to his country. The result is a memoir of extraordinary political intrigue.

Book excerpt: You have been intensely protecting the small lamp in a closed room for a long time while the sun is basking in glory outside your window! What stops you from opening this window to brightness? You may wait for someone else to open it, but this window can open only from the inside! Do No More reminds us that what we look for is always available to us, but we are busy protecting our small creations. We can do nothing to earn our peace and happiness, but we can get away from it. This book touches upon fundamental but subtle aspects of life, which comes in the way of our much-desired well-being. It is not about following instructions, techniques or methods, rather asking genuine questions that can help open the window and present a clearer picture…

Book excerpt: This book was written primarily as a legacy to the author's family. She was born in Egypt and grew up in Cairo in the 1950's in a secular Jewish community which had its own unique customs and traditions. In its apogee, the community numbered 80,000 people. They all left or were expelled between 1948 and 1967 and there are now only a handful of Jews still living in Egypt. In the book, she shares memories of her childhood and describes in great detail a way of life which no longer exists. She evokes the scents snd smells of the busy Cairo streets and describes the local people she came into contact with every day. Jewish and Muslim festivals, mores, customs and superstitions are recounted anecdotally. She also talks about her experience as a refugee in England, initially living in a hostel in Gloucestershire and then settling in London. Apart from her father, her family did not speak English, so learning a new language, battling with the harsh English winter and adapting to a new culture had its difficulties. Her family, like most refugees, surmounted all these with a great deal of resilience and determination. She describes herself as British, but confesses to still feeling somewhat uprooted, even after all these years.

Book excerpt: Reginald--better known as "Dutch"--Thompson is a multi-faceted storyteller with unforgettable voices--those of Roy from Murray Harbour North, Adelaide from Bunbury, Gus from Chepstow, and countless others--to tell the stories of the Bygone days in Prince Edward Island [sometimes NS, too]. Stories that, without Dutch's talent and care, might be remembered only by family and close friends or lost altogether. Remember when the train ran from tip to tip and along all the small branches, taking goods, people, and baseball teams to other parts of the Island? How about when ice cream and two pieces of cakes cost 10 cents at White's Ice Cream Parlour on Kent Street? When lobster was not the gourmet's delight it is now and the backs were used to fertilize the crops? That butchering the pig before a full moon will mean less fat on the meat? Or that it was bad luck to cut your nails on Sundays. From CBC Radio to the pages of this book, you'll hear Dutch's voice encouraging these informative, illuminating, poignant, and hilarious stories from the minds and hearts of Maritimers born between 1895 and 1925, almost as if they were all still here and telling them to you.

Book excerpt: Bygone Binghamton Remembering People and Places of the Past Volume One is a peoples history of some of the most memorable persons, events, and landmarks of the Binghamton area in modern times. It includes the personal memories in their own words of hundreds of people crosschecked, whenever possible, by letters, newspapers, scrapbooks, and personal files. Its many chapters focus on well-remembered restaurants, Mom and Pop grocery stores, ice cream and penny candy places, dairies, and bakeries. It tells, for the first time, the origins of the famous sauce served at Little Venice, the secret wartime exploits of the man who founded Pinos, the background of the Pig Stands, the long-repressed World War II horrors experienced by a young boy who grew up to own the Schnitzelbank, and the married couple who gave Pat Mitchell his start in the ice cream business. Local companies like GAF/Ansco/Ozalid, General Electric, and the Erie Shops are profiled. The founding, heyday, and history of IBM in Endicott are explored. The chapter on Endicott Johnson is a small book in itself and provides information never before published. The once-flourishing downtown shopping districts come to life once again in the words of those who remember them. The notorious Clinton Street Run lives again in the stories of people who attempted it. Drazens, Philadelphia Sales, and Lescrons are among the highlighted stores. Former newspapers and magazines and some of the most beloved or controversial writers Tom Cawley, Gene Grey, Lou Parrillo are recalled.
