Book excerpt: Joining the Women's Royal Naval Service at the start of World War 2, young Jane Beacon stands brave and tall against the enemy, the sea, and the entrenched chauvinism of the Royal Navy. Set against a sweeping panorama of the war and the Royal Navy, the story tells of her struggle to succeed as the pioneer Naval boat crew Wren. Coming of age under extreme conditions, she finds herself as a warm woman, as a leader and as an outstanding seaman. From early days to the beaches of Dunkirk her beauty captivates hearts, her abilities confound a deeply doubtful Admiralty, and her fiery independence of spirit always puts her at an angle to authority. World War 2 was a defining period on the road to emancipation of women. The desperate need for every usable pair of hands for the war effort meant that the old barriers to women's participation in the outside world of work and life beyond the home were broken down, never to be fully re-instated. The young men of the time, as well as being ordered to do the fighting and dying, found themselves in the vanguard of a social revolution where their womenfolk stood alongside them and were an essential part of ultimate victory.

Book excerpt: This is World War Two with a difference. It was not just the men who went to war but women too, as this action-packed story tells. Set against a sweeping panorama of the war and the Royal Navy, Wren Jane Beacon goes to War shows just how close to the action a girl could get. Brave and feisty, independent of spirit so always at an angle to authority, from the start of the war she does brilliantly as the Navy's first experimental boat crew Wren. But the story is much more than bullets and stormy seas; human life in all its complexities is there as she comes of age under extreme circumstances. The young Jane Beacon not only has to overcome the entrenched chauvinism of the Royal Navy; she also learns about herself and her sexuality. She soon finds out that having an affair in a warship is a major naval taboo. Almost chucked out when it comes to light, only her exceptional performance in the boats saves her. As a rating she learns to live with the lower deck and its own particular ways but coming from a comfortable upper middle-class family she is just as at ease in the wardroom which in itself is a source of strife. As she develops, neither corporal punishment nor naval bloody-mindedness can put her off. Typical of her impulsive nature, she takes a naval cutter to Dunkirk without permission to help with the evacuation and does great things, much to the annoyance of Naval authority. World War Two saw the UK's armed forces massively expanded and, as always, the fighting and dying was done by young men drafted in whether they liked it or not. This time, the conscription also took in the UK's women on a mass scale, and without them the war would not have been won. While their work was mostly in support and production, there were some who got close up to the front line activities and Wren Jane Beacon goes to War is the story of one who did. It is much more than "a ripping good yarn", as one reviewer put it, although it is all of that. Quite instinctively she lives, loves and works close to the edge and the tale shows women can be heroes too but always with a warm human side.

Petty Officer Wren Jane Beacon finds out the hard way, coming very close to the edge. Newly married to the love of her life in September 1941 and trusted by the Navy to be a trainer for the first boat crew Wrens' course, her contribution to the war effort seemed secure and valued. But then her well-known fiery nature brings nothing but trouble. Losing fingers, losing her temper, and losing her hard-won status all pile on top of losing the two most important people in her life. This litany of disaster brings Jane Beacon through a court martial, the consequences of which show the Royal Navy at its harshest, to a deep dark place which even she struggles to cope with. Succour comes from an unexpected quarter, in the form of a Wren whom Jane once saved. The affair that follows proves a balm to Jane's troubled soul, enabling her to find her inner strength again. Once back on duty, extreme bravery in experimental work then the rescue of a stranded gun boat crew from wild weather pounding their boat to pieces on a lee shore, see more medals being added to her tally. The old saying 'never a dull moment' is certainly an apt description of Jane Beacon's life through the tumultuous ups and downs of this fifth book in her saga. Book excerpt: The Cut: In 1941 there were still many professional workers on the English canal system, and they referred to the canals as 'The Cut'. When sea experienced boat crew Wren Jane Beacon is sent to investigate the Cut and its people to see if Wrens might make crews for the freight-carrying narrow boats, she enters a very different world. As seen through the eyes of this sympathetic outsider, the lives and social structures of the boat people are explored in detail to give a lively picture of a historic way of life dictated by the circumstances in which they lived. Despite it being 1941, for much of her trip the war is far away. From Limehouse to Birmingham and on to the coalfields around Coventry, then by horse boat to Oxford and Lechlade, Wren Jane enters fully into the closed world of the canal people. This means days of intensely hard physical work but she determinedly sticks with it to emerge as a fledged narrow boat person herself. The free spirits of the boating community in which she is placed shake Wren Jane's personal beliefs to their foundations, accustomed as she is to a regulated way of life. The life of the boat person is one of constant toil bounded by the canal system, close to nature and cut off from the endless news of battles and military set-backs. But the way of life is so all-absorbing that Wren Jane barely notices this lack. By her trip's end returning to the world of war and strict discipline (which one is actually the 'real world'?) is a daunting prospect. She is left with deep misgivings about her life which will leave a permanent mark on her view of the world.

Book excerpt: Dedicated to the Sailors and Marines who lost their lives on the final voyage of USS Indianapolis and to those who survived the torment at sea following its sinking. plus the crews that risked their lives in rescue ships. The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was a decorated World War II warship that is primarily remembered for her worst 15 minutes. . This ship earned ten (10) battle stars for her service in World War II and was credited for shooting down nine (9) enemy planes. However, this fame was overshadowed by the first 15 minutes July 30, 1945, when she was struck by two (2) torpedoes from Japanese submarine I-58 and sent to the bottom of the Philippine Sea. The sinking of Indianapolis and the loss of 880 crew out of 1,196 --most deaths occurring in the 4-5 day wait for a rescue delayed --is a tragedy in U.S. naval history. This historical reference showcases primary source documents to tell the story of Indianapolis, the history of this tragedy from the U.S. Navy perspective. It recounts the sinking, rescue efforts, follow-up investigations, aftermath and continuing communications efforts. Included are deck logs to better understand the ship location when she sunk and testimony of survivors and participants. For additional historical publications produced by the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command, please check out these resources here: https://bookstore.gpo.gov/agency/naval-history-heritage-command Year 2016 marked the 71st anniversary of the sinking and another spike in public attention on the loss -- including a big screen adaptation of the story, talk of future films, documentaries, and planned expeditions to locate the wreckage of the warship.

Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • After providing what is arguably the worst single performance in the history of the NFL, third-string quarterback Rick Dockery becomes a national laughingstock. Cut by the Cleveland Browns, and shunned by every other team, Rick insists that his agent find a team that does need him. Against enormous odds, Rick lands a job—as the starting quarterback for the Mighty Panthers ... of Parma, Italy. The Parma Panthers desperately want a former NFL player—any former NFL player—at their helm. And now they’ve got Rick, who knows nothing about Parma (not even where it is) and doesn’t speak a word of Italian. To say that Italy—the land of fine wines, extremely small cars, and football americano—holds a few surprises for Rick Dockery would be something of an understatement. Book excerpt: During the childhood years of Queen Elizabeth II, one of the most famous women who ever lived, a young governess helped shape her into the icon the world knows today. In 1933, twenty-two-year-old Marion Crawford accepts the role of a lifetime, tutoring the little Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret Rose. Her one stipulation to their parents is that she bring some doses of normalcy into their sheltered and privileged lives. At Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle and Balmoral, Marion defies stuffy protocol to take the princesses on tube trains, swimming at public baths, and on joyful Christmas shopping trips at Woolworth’s. From her ringside seat at the heart of the British monarchy she witnesses the trauma of the Abdication, the glamour of the Coronation, the onset of World War II. She steers the little princesses through it all, as close as a mother. As Hitler’s planes fly over Windsor, she shelters her charges in the castle dungeons (not far from where the Crown Jewels are hidden in a biscuit tin). Afterwards, she is present when Elizabeth first sets eyes on Philip, her future husband. But being beloved confidante to the Windsor family comes at huge personal cost. Marriage, children, her own views: all are compromised by proximity to royal glory. In this majestic story of love, sacrifice and allegiance, bestselling novelist Holden brings to life the early years before Queen Elizabeth II became monarch. “This captivating page-turner whisks readers back in time to Buckingham Palace in 1933…A majestic story that delves into the incredible life of Queen Elizabeth II before she took her place on the throne.”—Woman’s World
