Book excerpt: Amanda Doucette pursues the connection between a reclusive artist and the wealthy surfer who turned up dead on a remote island in Vancouver Island’s Pacific Rim in a wilderness-infused mystery perfect for fans of Jane Harper or Louise Penny. While exploring the rugged landscape of Vancouver Island’s Pacific Rim, Amanda Doucette is drawn to a reclusive old artist known only as Luke, who lives off the grid on a remote island. His vivid paintings hint at a traumatic secret from his past that brings to mind her own struggles with PTSD, and she begins to bond with him. But when the body of a surfer washes up on the beach, Luke flees deep into the interior. What is the connection between Luke and the victim, and what does it have to do with Vietnam and a hippie commune from fifty years ago? Fearing Luke might do something desperate, Amanda searches for answers and races to find him before the police or the victim’s family get to him first.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlie McCabe and his best friend Lonnie Horowitz had often talked about scuba diving. Now with enough money in their accounts to cover more than expenses, the decision was made. After graduating from their course, the two young men meet an American couple that are just as enthusiastic about diving as they are. Meeting up at the parking lot for access to the beaches at Half Moon Bay and the south end of Wreck Bay, they soon find that someone has a grudge. Why, they don’t know, but after the second incident happens, they decide to find out. After they start diving in the bay, they are amazed at their discovery of parts of a sailboat mast. Investigating further they find old boards buried a couple of feet under the mud, on the bottom of the bay. Using the time between tides, they dig at the mud, until they find a hatchway. The excitement grows as they prepare to dive as a group, and discover what may be found inside the old wrecked hull.
Download or read book Hydrodynamics written by Harry Schulz and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2012-01-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The knowledge of the characteristics of the fluids and their ability to transport substances and physical properties is relevant for us. However, the quantification of the movements of fluids is a complex task, and when considering natural flows, occurring in large scales (rivers, lakes, oceans), this complexity is evidenced. This book presents conclusions about different aspects of flows in natural water bodies, such as the evolution of plumes, the transport of sediments, air-water mixtures, among others. It contains thirteen chapters, organized in four sections: Tidal and Wave Dynamics: Rivers, Lakes and Reservoirs, Tidal and Wave Dynamics: Seas and Oceans, Tidal and Wave Dynamics: Estuaries and Bays, and Multiphase Phenomena: Air-Water Flows and Sediments. The chapters present conceptual arguments, experimental and numerical results, showing practical applications of the methods and tools of Hydrodynamics.

Book Synopsis Marine Ecology by : Muhammet Turkoglu
Download or read book Marine Ecology written by Muhammet Turkoglu and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last decades, aquatic resources have been severely depleted due to human-induced factors such as overexploitation and pollution and more recently due to deviations in the physicochemical parameters of oceans, dramatic changes in weather patterns and melting of glaciers. The effects of these man-made factors are occurring in a relatively shorter time scale and, in many cases, are beyond the capacity of organisms to adapt to these deviations. The majority of natural aquatic resources, which are one of the most important food sources on the planet, are being used to the extent that limits their capacity for regeneration. Despite ongoing attempts towards developing strategies for long-term management of aquatic resources all over the world, efforts have met with limited success. Thus, the sustainable use of aquatic resources has become a very important reality considering a projected human population of 11 billion by the year 2100. With this reality in mind, the purpose of this book is to shed more light on the field of marine ecology by emphasizing the diversity of aquatic life on earth and its importance both as part of a balanced ecosystem and as part of critical source of food on earth. The book covers important findings, discussions and reviews on a variety of subjects on environmental and competitive interactions of marine organisms at different trophic levels and their effects on the productivity, dynamics and structure of marine ecosystems around the world. Each chapter focuses on a specific case in the field of marine ecology and was written by researchers with years of experience in their respective fields. We hope that academicians, researchers and students as well as experts and professionals working in the field of marine ecology will benefit from these contributions. We also hope that this book will inspire more studies to help better understand the marine environment and develop strategies to better protect this crucial element of life on earth.
