Book excerpt: What would it take for you to stop loving God? At some point thinking Christians must wrestle with the question, "If God loves me, why did He let this happen?" In Wounded Head, Wounded Heart the question is not explored theologically, but experientially. As the story opens, Robb's mom is questioning God because of the poverty they have endured since returning from the mission field. Then Robb, age seventeen, is in a car accident which leaves him in a deep coma with multiple injuries. Who is this God? God claims to protect us, but bad things happen. God claims he is just, but life is unfair. God claims to love us, but life hurts. Robb's mom cannot deny her experiences, yet she knows the Bible is true. She cannot reconcile what she knows of Scripture to what she has seen and experienced. So, she begins her quest for a way to harmonize God's claims and her reality. This emotionally intense and thought-provoking story will challenge readers to consider how their own experiences have impacted their faith. Wounded Head, Wounded Heart is a story of hope for everyone who has ever asked, "God, why?"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 2004, Lora Jones was a happy wife and proud mother of two beautiful children. Lora and her family left for a family vacation, excited to celebrate the holidays, but sounds of music and laughter in their van were shattered by a head-on collision. Lora watched helplessly as, one-by-one, her beloved family slipped into eternity. Awake in a nightmare, all traces of laughter were replaced by the mournful cries of a wounded heart. How in the world could Lora go on alone? Song of a Wounded Heart tells the true story of Lora’s journey from death to hope. Unbelievably, God sang to her the night of the accident. “Do not be afraid,” He whispered, “This is for my glory.” How could that be possible? She was crushed under the enormous pain, unable to think. In the months to come, as she struggled to understand, God patiently continued to sing, drawing her gently to His side, daring her to trust Him. Lora shares her personal journal entries, including the Bible reading plan God used to speak to her and stories of people in the Bible who also struggled with faith. Join Lora in Song of a Wounded Heart as she asks God questions, deals with anger and loneliness, and chooses to believe in the goodness of God, in spite of the circumstances.

Book excerpt: The “fascinating” #1 New York Times bestseller that awakened the world to the destruction of American Indians in the nineteenth-century West (The Wall Street Journal). First published in 1970, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee generated shockwaves with its frank and heartbreaking depiction of the systematic annihilation of American Indian tribes across the western frontier. In this nonfiction account, Dee Brown focuses on the betrayals, battles, and massacres suffered by American Indians between 1860 and 1890. He tells of the many tribes and their renowned chiefs—from Geronimo to Red Cloud, Sitting Bull to Crazy Horse—who struggled to combat the destruction of their people and culture. Forcefully written and meticulously researched, Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee inspired a generation to take a second look at how the West was won. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Dee Brown including rare photos from the author’s personal collection.

Book excerpt: Sometimes wounds of the heart hurt the most and seem to stay with us the longest. Past hurts often lead to additional hurts if never healed. In our quest for love, we often make irrational decisions and choices all to be loved. This book is about a heart exposed to hurts, disappointment, rejection, and pain. A personal, transparent revealing of the challenges many women face in broken relationships and the path we walk, if willing, to allow our heart to be exposed to the healing of God.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Waldron's brief biography of Thomas Merton examines and exposes a man who lived a deeply spiritual life, yes, but also a deeply conflicted one as well. By the use of Jungian theory and archetypes, Waldron explores all of the major Merton works (e.g., Seven Storey Mountain, The Sign of Jonas, The Collected Poems, Zen and the Birds of Appetite), but especially all of the many volumes of Merton's private diaries, and discovers a man, a soul struggling to live "la vita nuova" in the monastery while being drawn by various sirens out of it. Edgy, chancy, and at times speculative, Waldron penetrates Merton's sometimes dense poetry and prose to discover or uncover what was wanting in Merton's soul his desire for his own hermitage; his longing for the nurse he fell in love with; his desire perhaps to establish an entirely new monastic foundation. Merton emerges less a saint than a sinner who never stopped trying to become a saint by "becoming who he really was."

Book excerpt: For those who have experienced childhood sexual abuse and those who love and care for them, The Wounded Heart offers a tender, compassionate window into the psychological effects of abuse and the theological foundations for healing. Thirty years ago, with great courage and vision, Dan Allender brought Christians to the table to acknowledge, understand, and help victims heal from their experience of the evil of sexual abuse. His work continues to help victims and those who love them to honestly acknowledge their abuse, understand the unique challenge of repentance for victims of abuse, and learn to love boldly in defiance of their trauma. Ultimately Dan offers the bold assurance to sexual abuse victims that even they can find their way to joy and hope in the comforting embrace of a good God. The Wounded Heart has sold over 400,000 copies and has been the first book family, friends, counselors, pastors, and victims have turned to in search of Christian answers to the calamity of sexual abuse. With a new introduction reflecting on the ongoing importance of the book, and a companion workbook for personal and group recovery, The Wounded Heart continues to offer an urgently needed word of grace in a world ravaged by sexual abuse.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The literary study of emotion is part of an important revisionary movement among scholars eager to recast emotional politics for the twenty-first century. Looking beyond the traditional categories of sentiment, sensibility, and sympathy, Jennifer Travis suggests a new approach to reading emotionalism among men. She argues that the vocabulary of injury, with its evaluations of victimhood and its assessments of harm, has deeply influenced the cultural history of emotions. From the Civil War to the early twentieth century, Travis traces the history of male emotionalism in American discourse. She argues that injury became a comfortable vocabulary--particularly among white middle-class men--through which to articulate and to claim a range of emotional wounds. The debates about injury that flourished in the cultural arenas of medicine, psychology, and the law spilled over into the realm of fiction, as Travis demonstrates through readings of works by Stephen Crane, William Dean Howells, Willa Cather, Henry James, and Edith Wharton. Travis concludes by linking this history to twenty-first-century preoccupations with "pain-centered politics," which, she cautions, too often focuses only on women and racial minorities.

Book excerpt: NANCY JOY HEFRON is a writer, emotional life coach, and teacher who lives in Mount Vernon, Iowa with her husband Mark on a beautiful acreage they fondly call El Shaddai. Through her company, Heartlights, Nancy Joy offers emotional healing retreats, sacred journeys and private sessions. She is the creator of a radio series called "It's all About You" and a self-help column by the same name. Find out more about Nancy Joy and her work at www.heartlights.net. ***About the book*** Rose Jocelyn Winston is a prominent "fifty-something" therapist in her community, and yet she begins to realize her life is not all that rosy. Her only daughter, Emily, has rejected her, and she has found that all her attempts to help her clients seem to be falling flat. In the midst of her mid-life crises she prays for help and has a powerful dream that takes her on an incredible journey. She travels, eventually, to the Yucatan, where two special dolphins and a Spirit guide help her uncover the doorway to true emotional healing and conscious compassion. On her journey, Rose discovers this life-changing formula that brings the truth of emotions into perspective, providing an incredible life tool for everyone. ***A message from the author*** After over twenty years as a spiritual teacher following the emotional clues of life, I felt strongly that it was time to begin to share what I had learned along the way to a wider audience. For three years I tried writing a self-help book to no avail. I felt that no form of teaching is more life changing than for the reader to "feel" what the words were saying. So I set out to write a teaching novel. From the first day I began to write, Rose's story just spilled out of my heart and soul. I easily birthed The Wounded Heart, and I know there will be more to come. -NJH
