Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Christian's Appreciation of Other Faiths: A Study of the Best in the World's Greatest Religions The discussion in these lectures is not so much from the standpoint of what is commonly called Liberal Religion as in the spirit of appreciativeness. In either case the question arises: Can missions exist under such circumstances? If the spirit Of missions disappears, then appreciativeness and lib eral religion are both wrong and ought to be dis carded. This is not the alternative in the estimation of the one who gave the lectures. A special treat ment is given to this question as a climax to the study. It deserves serious thought on the part of all who desire the spread of the Kingdom of God. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: A Dictionary of Religion and Ethics is designed to be the ultimate reference book for religious students and scholars, edited by Shailer Mathews and Gerald Smith. From "Ab, Ninth Of" to "Zwingli, Huldreich," this dictionary contains thousands of terms of importance in religion and ethics. While Biblical terms seem to make up the largest component of this reference guide, Christian words are by no means the sole focus of the dictionary. What the editors refer to as "important terms used in primitive and foreign religions" are also included in this collection. While the words of non-Christian religions are not as prevalent as Christian words in A Dictionary of Religion and Ethics, the world's religions are still mostly well represented. A Dictionary of Religion and Ethics is a valuable tool for anybody engaged in religious studies. This book makes the perfect companion piece for the study of any religious text. The definitions are clear, well written, and serve to expand the knowledge of the reader. This dictionary is highly recommended for all students and scholars of religion as well as those interested in having a better understanding of the meaning of religios terms from various religions. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to the Study of Some Living Religions of the East is a textbook by author Sydney Cave, who lived amongst Hindus for many years of his life and intimately studied other Eastern religions. He intended this work to be a beginner's guide to the study of non-Christian religions. Cave has divided this textbook into five sections, each discussing a separate religion or religions. Hinduism, Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, and Islam are all explored in depth in this book. The author follows a similar path for each section of the book. Each religion is introduced with a focus on its history and core beliefs. Important religious figures are discussed, with a focus on the spiritual significance of these individuals. The societies where these religions are practiced are also analyzed, helping to add some much needed social context to the discussion. As a primer on the non-Christian religions, Sydney Cave's book is largely a success. The reader with little or no knowledge of the religions discussed will certainly find themselves with a greater understanding of the world's religions upon conclusion of this book. The author's style is eminently readable, with clear, concise prose lending an air of authority to the text. His section on Hinduism, the religion in which Cave is most knowledgeable, is probably the highlight of the book and is certainly the most thorough. An Introduction to the Study of Some Living Religions of the East is a terrific guide for those interested in learning about the world's religions. Any student of religious studies will find this to be a valuable text, as will anybody else with an interest in learning more about the belief systems of the people that surround them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Worship in the World's Religions The study of the religions of the world is of great interest and importance. Three reasons for this may be mentioned in particular. Far more is known about the great religions of the world today than ever before, outside the regions in which each prevails; a great deal of impartial and accurate study during the last hundred years makes it possible to know the faith of others as never previously. It is no longer permissible to speak, as did medieval miracle plays, of Muslims worshipping an idol called Baphomet! And it should be no longer asserted that the Chinese adore Confucius, or that Christians regard the Virgin Mary as the second of three gods. Secondly, far more people from the West have visited the East than in any earlier age, and many Easterners have come to see the West. The ease of travel, imperialism, and the movement of troops during the wars, have brought the world together. Many Europeans and Americans have been confronted with Hindu temples and Korean monasteries, Asians have visited Christian cathedrals, and African soldiers have seen Burmese pagodas. A third reason for the importance of this subject is the revival of life in many of the world's religions. With the rise of nationalism and the recovery of self-government, many eastern lands have turned again to the religion on which their culture has been based. With the example of Christian missions before them Buddhism and Islam, themselves historically missionary religions, have begun to send literature and envoys to other peoples. Even in Hinduism and Sikhism a similar awakening and outward looking is apparent. The modern world has not yet done with religion. Our scientific age, with its pride and its uncertainties, is only just beginning to realize the strength of the faiths that men have held dear for thousands of years and that are reviving today.
