Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wit, Wisdom, and Beauties of Shakespeare N o selections have been taken from several plays often found in editions of Shakespeare, as in the light of the best authorities his connec tion with them is deemed highly improbable, nor have any passages been found in either of his two long poems which seem to have a separate value apart from their context. The text has been made to conform to the Riverside edition of Shakespeare, where there is any difference in the readings of various edi tions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wisdom of Shakespeare: Being Extracts From His Prose and Verse If the transparent pictures of a cinemato graph roll were found clipped apart in a med ley of separate pictures, the test of their re union in a reconstituted film would be the air of life in the moving picture thrown from it on the shimmering screen. And so it is with those elements of a living portrait to be found in the extra-dramatic bits of Shake speare's work. This statement has been made before; has been supported; has been denied. The present writer says merely Read and judge. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Named One of Esquire's 50 Best Biographies of All Time The Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award finalist, reissued with a new afterword for the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death. A young man from a small provincial town moves to London in the late 1580s and, in a remarkably short time, becomes the greatest playwright not of his age alone but of all time. How is an achievement of this magnitude to be explained? Stephen Greenblatt brings us down to earth to see, hear, and feel how an acutely sensitive and talented boy, surrounded by the rich tapestry of Elizabethan life, could have become the world’s greatest playwright.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fools of Shakespeare an Interpretation of Their Wit, Wisdom and Personalities I speak from the view-point of the actor, for whom, and for whom alone the plays were written. I have not entered the literary dissecting room, nor invaded the realm of psychology. The line of demarcation between humor and imbecility, folly and insanity, I leave to the professional alienist. I have taken the characters as they appear in the plays and as I conceive the author intended them, with due reference to their relation to thu other characters. He analyses Shakespeare's own life and char acter from the evolutionary point of view, and demonstrates from this how the characters created by the poet were also of necessity subjected to this psychological process. He begins with the Venus of Venus and Adonis, Shakespeare's youthful poem, and ends with Queen Catherine, perhaps one of the ripest and most wonderful of Shakespeare's por traits, the very queen of earthly queens, reproduced in all her womanhood, wisdom, nobility, and gentleness, to quote King Henry's own assertion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Great Classics The plays presented all treat of difierent themes, and they have been carefully gleaned from the whole realm of dramatic literature. It is not contended that there are not other plays of equal merit that might have been selected. It is merely claimed that the plays that have been selected are all representative plays of great dramatists. Shakespeare, the greatest of all dramatists, has been omitted for the reason that his plays have been issued in innumerable editions, and are to be found in nearly every private library throughout the land. Shakespeare's dramatic method, moreover, partakes of such infinite variety that it would have been well-night impossible to determine which of his plays would best represent him. His comprehensive wisdom and his profound knowledge of human nature make him seem almost superhuman. He surpassed all his predecessors in the drawing of his characters, which range over almost every type of humanity furnishing a suitable subject for the tragic or the comic art. Indeed, he has never been approached by any of his competitors in any branch of the drama illustrated by his genius. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that moments of allusion to the supernatural in Shakespeare are occasions where Karl Marx and John Maynard Keynes register the perseverance of haunted structures in modern culture. This "reenchantment," at the heart of modernity and of literary and political works central to our understanding of modernity, is the focus of this book. The author shows that allusion to supernatural moments in Shakespeare ("scare quotes") allows writers to both acknowledge and distance themselves from the supernatural phenomena that challenge their disenchanted understanding of the social world. He also uses these modern appropriations of Shakespeare as provocations to reread some of his works, notably Hamlet and Macbeth. Two pairs of linked chapters form the center of the book. One pair joins a reading of Marx, concentrating on The Eighteenth Brumaire, to Hamlet; the other links a reading of Keynes, focusing on The Economic Consequences of the Peace, to Macbeth. The chapters on Marx and Keynes trace some of the strange circuits of supernatural rhetoric in their work, Marx's use of ghosts and Keynes's fascination with witchcraft. The sequence linking Marx to Hamlet, for example, has as its anchor the Frankfurt School's concept of the phantasmagoria, the notion that it is in the most archaic that one encounters the figure of the new. Looking closely at Marx's association of the Ghost in Hamlet with the coming revolution in turn illuminates Hamlet's association of the Ghost with the supernatural beings many believed haunted mines. An opening chapter discusses Henry Dircks, a nineteenth-century English inventor who developed—and then lost his claim to—a phantasmagoria or machine to project ghosts on stage. Dircks resorted to magical rhetoric in response to his loss, which is emblematic for the book as a whole, charting ways the scare quote can, paradoxically, continue the work of enlightenment.
