Book excerpt: I'd like to thank you remaining reading dinosaurs for your interest in this project. Sadly I believe we are losing future generations to the art of the scribe. To actually pick up a book & hold it in your hands while turning pages is something tangibly enjoyable. I for one, would much rather have a sports page on the train, or even in the john, than my wifi connected phone. There's a place for technology. Just not every place.I believe this compilation of baseball championship statistics differs from any previous attempts at documenting the history of the World Series.First of all since the Neft brothers their annual Baseball Encyclopedia publication there are few if any dedicated books relating to just baseball. And none that I've found that specifically delve into the Fall Classic.Even if "Encyclopedia" were still available it would pale comparatively regarding the convenience "Chronology" provides. The Baseball Encyclopedia, a wonderful & informative text to be sure, made the reader really dig deep to find information and how that data compared to similar numbers or teams from other era's. The World Series Chronology, as it states in the title, compares, contrasts, & coordinates the champions. For instance; If one were curious to know which team comes closest to the New York Yankees record 5 consecutive titles (1949-53) one could in fact garner this information in the "Encyclopedia" after substantial investigation. But in "Chronology" it is easy to see the Oakland Athletics string of 3 straight (1972-74) is the next franchise in line.Or if someone is interested in knowing which two teams faced one another the most times in World Series competition, again this could be found after much tracking in another publication. Finding that the Yankees & Dodgers have met 11 times would not be impossible to decipher from the "Encyclopedia". But again "Chronology" does all the research, and the information jumps right off the page for the reader. The Yanks dominated the BROOKLYN Dodgers in their 7 meetings, winning 6 times. But since the Dodgers moved to L.A. the teams have split their 4 meetings evenly. These are just two examples of the myriad comparisons, contrasts, & relative similarities of all of the franchises that have played the glorious game of baseball into the fall.Want to know what teams dominated a decade in their respective league? Or how many times? How about how many times teams that won 100 games in the regular season faced one another in the Fall Classic? Which team has the most sweeps? Who got there with the least amount of wins? How they all fare historically? Which league holds the edge? All of this information, combined with anecdotes, social & historical correlations, and so much more is conveniently at the disposal of the reader. Thank you for your time. I suspect that later you'll thank me for mine.

This book was released on 2009-12-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeffrey A. Kroessler's comprehensive and entertaining time line stretches from the pastoral entertainments of the Dutch to the corporate captivity of professional sports. He chronicles events ranging from the truly heroic to the heartbreaking, from moments of municipal greatness to inescapable social change. Through it all he plants the world of sport at the very center of New York's story. Fully illustrated, The Greater New York Sports Chronology covers the spectacle of blood sports like bullbaiting to the birth of baseball, the now-forgotten six-day pedestrian contests, and today's New York City Marathon. Alongside great moments like the Mets' "amazin'" World Series win in 1969, Joe Louis's historic bouts with Max Schmeling, Jackie Robinson's breaking of baseball's color line, and Secretariat's remarkable Triple Crown win at Belmont, we encounter the point-shaving scandals of college basketball and the corrupting influence of organized crime in professional boxing. Beyond immortals like Lou Gehrig and Joe Namath, we also find such once well known figures as Joe Lapchick, Marty Glickman, Gertrude Ederle, and Toots Shor. Year by year, this chronology recounts chess matches, America's Cup races, dog shows, golf tournaments, polo matches, tennis games, and more. Kroessler describes the historic venues, boxing arenas, gyms, stadiums, ballparks, and racetracks that have come and gone, yet made New York the undisputed capital of American sport. Witnessing it all, of course, are the greatest fans in the world.

Book excerpt: Baltimore 1966. Suffering through a summer of heated racial animosity, baseball fans look hungrily to the Orioles to bring new respect to their once-great city. Their young team of no-name kids and promising prospects appears to have been strengthened by the recent addition of veteran slugger Frank Robinson - but the former National League MVP is bad news (it is rumored), washed up and unreliable. To lay these rumors to rest, Robby must play harder than he's ever played before. In his first year in the league, against unfamiliar pitchers in new ballparks, he resoundingly proves his worth -- to his city, his team, and himself -- by delivering a Triple Crown performance. Aided by a hilarious and memorable cast of characters -- the gentlemanly southerner Brooks Robinson and the wickedly inventive prankster Moe Drabowsky, a pitching staff of unknown kids like Jim Palmer and Dave McNally, and a gargantuan yet nimble fielder called Boog" -- Frank Robinson delivers his new team to its first World Series. But before they take it all, the Orioles must unseat the reigning champion Los Angeles Dodgers. With America's cities in mounting turmoil, Los Angeles seems like another world altogether, a sunny land of surfers and movie stars. Comfortably dwelling in this higher plane is pitching ace Sandy Koufax, arguably the greatest lefthander in baseball history, behind whom the Dodgers have won two of the previous three World Series, replacing the Yankees as the sport's dominant team. Though battling agonizing arthritis throughout the season, the godlike Koufax has nonetheless persevered to win twenty-seven games in 1966, a personal best. Few outside Baltimore give the Orioles more than a fighting chance against such series veterans as Koufax, Don Drysdale, Maury Wills, Tommy Davis, and the rest. Experts are betting that the Dodgers can sweep it in four. "What transpires instead astonishes the nation, as the greatest pitching performance in World Series history is capped by a redemption beyond imagining." -- Book Jacket

Book excerpt: This tribute to the World Series is packed with nearly 600 outstanding photographs and illustrations and features box scores for every World Series game played over the championship's first 100 years. Written by noted baseball historian Eric Enders, whose passion for the game shines through on every page, 100 Years of the World Series is the most detailed popular reference work ever published on the greatest sports championship in the world. The World Series has captivated sports fans since its very beginning - the hard-fought final contest between the two best teams of the year not only excites, but also creates the mythology of modern life. Baseball itself is part of our cultural fiber, and the Fall Classic is the sport's crucible, where dynasties are born, heroes made, and human nature put to the test. In early autumn, millions of fans eat, breathe, and sleep baseball, embracing the excitement and anxiety of the season - hoping to avoid the tragedy of a loss, and to exult in the glory of a championship. In this comprehensive work, Eric Enders recounts the fascinating history of the Series, describing the sensational events and outstanding performances that are forever etched into the memories of baseball fans around the world. The fall season was forever changed in October 1903, when baseball's first World Series began a postseason tradition that would mark nearly every future October through the next century. From the very start, the World Series has seen the sport's most iconic moments.
