Book excerpt: Despite almost four decades and billions of dollars in development activities, we are barely in a position to track the changing dynamics of poverty or to define with conviction the processes that entrap the poor in their misery. Accounting for about 90% of global poverty, rural poverty, through transmigration, is also a main contributor to urban poverty. It is in the rural areas of the world where poverty is most severe in human terms, where the hunger, hopelessness, hardship, and despair commonly associated with entrenched poverty are most pronounced, where basic health services, sanitation, educational opportunities, and other common amenities are most lacking. The alleviation of rural poverty is therefore tantamount to the alleviation of global poverty in its entirety. The State of World Rural Poverty offers the first comprehensive look at the economic conditions and prospects of the world's rural poor.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental economics may hold the key to the successful management of the world's accelerating environmental problems, from transport and pollution to the wholesale degradation of much of the Third World, climate change and loss of the ozone layer. Increasingly a range of professionals and policy makers as well as environmentalists and the economists themselves are turning to it to show how to arrive at decisions on these complicated and vital issues. This reader brings together the most important contributions to the subject. Sections of it cover the theoretical issues, the different ways of valuing the environment, economic instruments of environmental policy, environment and development and global environmental problems. An extensive introduction by the editors maps out the area and the development of the arguments within it. As a whole the volume makes an indispensable sourcebook for those in any way involved with these questions. Anil markandya is one of the authors of Blueprint for a Green Economy and Blueprint 2: Greening the Global Economy.

Book excerpt: In 37 full-colour international maps, The State of the Earth examines the health of the planet and the quality of human life. It illustrates all the critical issues - global warming, holes in the ozone layer, rainforest destruction, the loss of wildlife, pollution of every sort. It identifies the effects of industrial and urban expansion, changing methods of agriculture and ever-increasing demands for energy. It measures our ability to meet basic human needs while protecting other forms of life. As the Chernobyl nuclear accident proved so dramatically in 1986, environmental problems do not stop at state boundaries. The State of the Earth reflects world wide public concern for our environment and considers the need for more effective international organizations and agreements. With facts on a broad range of topics - from air quality and acid rain to toxic waste and tourism - this book should be a comprehensive source of reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reports the more policy-oriented results of the Biodiversity programme of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences Beijer Institute. The programme brought economists and ecologists together to consider where the problem in biodiversity loss really lies, what costs it has for society, and how it might best be addressed. The results are strikingly different from those reported in other works on the subject. Biodiversity loss matters for all ecosystems -- not just the megadiversity tropical forests. And it matters because it compromises the resilience and so the productivity of those systems. Biodiversity conservation requires the development of policies that change the behaviour of resource use everywhere -- not just in parks and reserves. The book is required reading for researchers and policy makers alike. It canvasses options for the reform of park management, biodiversity conservation projects, property rights, tax, trade and price regimes that are within the reach of governments everywhere.

Book excerpt: This volume records the proceedings of the 22nd Annual International Con ference of the International Simulation and Gaming Association (ISAGA), 15-19 July, 1991, Kyoto, Japan, sponsored by the Science Council of Japan and the Japanese Association of Simulation and Gaming (JASAG). The con ference theme was Global Modeling for Solving Global Problems. The first 2 days of the conference were held in the magnificent Kyoto International Conference Hall; the 3rd day was spent admiring the floats of the famous Gion Festival in the exquisite city of Kyoto and the Daibutsu (or Great Buddha) of the Todaiji Temple in Nara and visiting one of the Sharp factories. During the last 2 days of the conference we were made most welcome in the Faculty of International Relations of Ritsumeikan University. The day after the conference, a number of delegates went to Hiroshima (the Peace Memorial Hall, Museum and Park) and also to one of Japan's "Scenic Trio," the island of Miyajima with its breathtaking views and the Itsukushima Shrine. The conference was attended by some 400 delegates from over 30 different countries. Over 100 sessions, both theoretical and practical, were given: keynote speeches, round-table discussions, workshops, papers. This volume reflects most of those sessions, in the form of either a full paper or a short abstract.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have poisoned the air and water on which our lives depend. Poor countries exhaust their land in the struggle to survive while rich countries demand more and more. The Earthscan Action Handbook spells out why things have gone so terribly wrong and what each of us can do to clean up the mess. Each chapter deals with one of the major problems people and the planet now face: meeting the human needs of health, education and social justice as well as the environmental needs of our dying lakes and forests, polluted seas, threatened habitats and endangered species. Packed with suggestions for positive action, this book also gives details of who to contact, what to read and where to go if you want to do more. Whether you care about buying safe food or feeding the world, The Earthscan Action Handbook is indispensable. Originally published in 1990

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main objective of politicians is to maximise economic growth, which heavily drives political policy and decision-making. Critics of the maximisation of growth as the central aim of economic policy have argued that growth in itself is not necessarily a good thing, particularly for the environment; however, what would replace the system and how it would be measured are questions that have been rarely answered satisfactorily. First published in 1991, this book was the first to lay out an entirely new set of practical proposals for developing new economic measurement tools, with the aim of being sustainable, ‘green’ and human-centred. Victor Anderson proposes that a whole set of indicators, rather than a single one, should play all the roles that GNP (Gross National Product) is responsible for. With a detailed overview of the central debates between the advocates and opponents of continued economic growth and an analysis of the various proposals for modification, this title will be of particular value to students interested in the diversity of measurement tools and the notion that economies should also be evaluated by their social and environmental consequences.
